Chapter 588: Should We Run Away?

He Juan grimaced upon hearing that question. "I’m sorry, I only remember you when I heard your name earlier." He let out a helpless laugh and pointed at his temple. "My memory has been extremely bad lately."

"N–No... it’s okay..." Kang Guanyu managed to say, his face a mess of tears and snot. "As long... as long as you still remember..."

He Juan couldn’t help but be amazed by the sudden turn of events. Earlier, when Mu Yuze mentioned his colleague’s name, it was like a forgotten box in the depth of He Juan’s memory was pried open, allowing him to remember bits and pieces of the teenager with a bright gummy smile. He had not wanted to seek Kang Guanyu out for fear that he would get the man implicated, but who could have foreseen that he would become an officer of the Violent Crime Unit, along with Mu Yuze at that?

He Juan stifled a chuckle, "Would you believe me if I said that I once wanted to introduce you two?" He shook his head, his smile tinged with amusement and nostalgia. "You’re close in age, so I thought that you would be able to get along with each other. Turns out, you ended up becoming friends even without my interference..."

"Colleague," Mu Yuze corrected with a deadpan tone, causing Kang Guanyu to sputter in disbelief.

"Y–You...!" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

He Juan felt a gentle tug on his pinky finger, and he turned to find Mu Yuze staring at him with a mildly sullen look. "You haven’t told me how the two of you knew each other."

Oh? He Juan raised an amused brow. Had his petty little bunny made an appearance? "I’d like to," He Juan took the omega’s smaller hand into his and rubbed soothing circles on his skin. "But I’m afraid that you’re running out of time. It’s almost 2 am."

Mu Yuze was taken aback by the news. The special attraction was ending already? Why did time fly so quickly when he was with He Juan? Alice’s adventure in Wonderland was over, and now it was time for her to return to reality. Mu Yuze couldn’t help but feel a surge of fear rising in his heart, and he grasped He Juan’s hand tighter in return. Was their time together coming to an end? What would happen to them from now on?

As though sensing his anxiety, He Juan flashed him a reassuring smile.

"Oh, you’re right!" Kang Guanyu slapped a hand over his forehead. "We need to leave soon, or our comrades will think that something happened to us!"

He Juan turned to him and made a request with an apologetic look, "Could you please give us some time alone?"

Kang Guanyu looked at them back and forth, his mouth forming an ’o’ of understanding. Nodding again and again like chicken pecking rice, he began to back away and offered He Juan a salute, "Don’t worry, XIU, Mu Yuze. Just take all the time you need. I will be waiting outside!"

As soon as Kang Guanyu left, Mu Yuze did not waste a second to delve into He Juan’s embrace like a rabbit slipping back into his burrow, his arms locked tightly behind He Juan’s back. A brief look of surprise crossed He Juan’s eyes, before it quickly morphed into mirth and adoration. Since when did his little bunny become so sweet and sticky? He Juan really couldn’t get used to it. Alas, he couldn’t deny that he enjoyed this side of Mu Yuze a little too much.

He returned the embrace and swung them side to side, cooing softly, "What is it? What is bothering our Xiao Ze?"

Still with his head nestled in He Juan’s chest, Mu Yuze asked, his voice small and muffled, "You will not go away anymore, will you?"

A pang of ache struck He Juan’s heart when he heard that. He instinctively tightened his arms around Mu Yuze, as though wishing to hide the omega within the protective cocoon of his embrace. He couldn’t even begin to imagine how much pain and hardship Mu Yuze had endured to reach where he was today, and it made him feel like nothing he did or said could ever compensate for it. All he could do was hold Mu Yuze close at a time like this, using his presence to tell the man that he would always be here.

Resting his cheek on the crown of Mu Yuze’s head, he made a solemn vow, each word coming from the bottom of his heart, "Don’t be afraid, Xiao Ze. From now on, until the day you decide you don’t want me anymore, I will always be by your side."

Mu Yuze’s arms tightened around him in admonishment and he raised his head to shoot He Juan a glare. "You’d better be prepared to be stuck with me forever, then."

"Oh, sweetheart..." He Juan’s eyes softened, his silver orbs seemed to glow with a light that rivaled even the fullest and brightest moon. He bent down to plant a tender kiss on Mu Yuze’s forehead, a soft chuckle escaping his lips, "You don’t have the slightest idea, do you? There’s nothing I wish for more than that."

Mu Yuze lowered his eyelids, his expression turning somber as he spoke, "Tonight, the goal of the operation is to lure you out of this building and apprehend you."

The corner of He Juan’s lips curled into a teasing smirk. "And they chose to send out a pretty little bunny to tempt me? What a devious plan, but remarkable nonetheless."

"Juan-gege, be serious!" Mu Yuze pinched his waist in retaliation, eliciting a soft laughter from the Alpha. His breath caught as he gazed at He Juan’s smiling features, savoring it like a man starved. He couldn’t help it; such a sight was so rare and tranquil that he felt tears springing up in his eyes. Not wanting He Juan to notice his emotional turmoil, he buried his face into He Juan’s chest again, inhaling the man’s rosewood and whiskey scents to his heart’s content. It was only then that he felt the turbulence in his heart slowly ebb away.

"I became a police officer so I could find you," he murmured. He sensed He Juan stiffening under his touch, but the man remained silent so Mu Yuze took it as a sign to continue, "I was angry and sad. I vowed to myself that I would find you. I would find you, drag you out from wherever you were hiding, and I would throw you behind the bars with my own hands."

"Xiao Ze..." He Juan’s voice was laced with a mixture of emotions.

Mu Yuze might have spoken those words in a nonchalant manner as though he was talking about the weather, but it was precisely for that reason that He Juan’s heart ached all the more. Through those few short sentences, he seemed to be able to glimpse into Mu Yuze’s struggle over the past seven years. Guilt and remorse flooded his entire being, filling his veins and every breath he took. Oh God, He Juan really wanted to punch himself for the pain he had inflicted on his omega.

Alas, no matter how much he wished to change the past, no matter how much he wished he had stayed— he knew that it was all impossible.

Leaving seven years ago had been the best decision he could make in the terrible situation he was in, even if it meant causing immense pain to the person he loved most. It was the only way he could keep Mu Yuze safe back then...

"But now that I’ve seen you..." Mu Yuze continued, his voice turning hoarse. He raised his head, revealing a pair of red-rimmed yet determined eyes. "Now that I’ve found you again, I really don’t want to see you suffer. Gege, should we just run away? Hide in a place where no one can find us? I can’t bear the thought of losing you again..."
