Chapter 612: Fate, Huh?

As those resentful words hung in the air, He Juan’s first reaction was to whip his head toward Mu Yuze, and his heart immediately skipped a beat when he saw the omega frozen in shock, his entire body tensed. He was not even breathing, as He Juan couldn’t detect any movement from his chest.

"Did you question him more about this, Chen’er?" He asked without taking his eyes off Mu Yuze.

"I did, but..."

From the speaker, Zhong Yun’s harsh breathing echoed loud and clear. If one were to listen closer, they could also hear the sound of his teeth grinding and chattering, a sign that he was starting to experience withdrawal symptoms. Nonetheless, Chen Youzhi pressed on, his tone more urgent and insistent. "Who is it? Who was working with the Manipulator?!"

This time, Zhong Yun’s laugh was weaker, shaky yet no less bitter. "I–I–If I had known about it... do you think I would have ended up like this?!"

"Damn it, just tell me every detail from the beginning! Who you encountered there, what they looked like, how they tricked you – everything!"

However, Zhong Yun merely offered a mindless murmur as though trapped by the demon of his own thoughts. "Why... why was I so foolish? If only I didn’t go... if only..."

BANG!

Chen Youzhi punched the table once again. "Mr. Zhong Yun!" He bellowed. "I need you to explain everything to me from the start!"

However, his attempts to intimidate ended up futile. It was at that point that Zhong Yun began to act like a madman, giggling while scratching himself all over, crying while calling out his dead lover’s name. Chen Youzhi had no choice but to tie him up for the time being so that he wouldn’t do any further damage to himself.

The recording soon ended, and Chen Youzhi released a frustrated sigh, pinching his brows. "That’s the gist of our conversation. He has been like this for almost two hours. I reckon that we have to wait until tomorrow to talk to him again."

At that moment, he made eye contact with He Juan, and He Juan immediately knew there was more the man did not say. He glanced at Mu Yuze, and upon seeing the omega deep in thought, he sighed and rose to his feet. "Take your time," he told Mu Yuze gently, patting his shoulder. "I will be right outside with Chen Youzhi."

Mu Yuze snapped his head up and opened his mouth, intending to say something. But he eventually closed it again and only gave a nod.

He Juan squeezed his shoulder one last time before signaling Chen Youzhi with his eyes. Together, they exited the room, climbed the stairs and stood on the roadside outside the apartment. The season was progressing toward autumn, and the air had gained a chilly tinge. He Juan couldn’t help but take a deep inhale of the fresh air, his mind replaying the recording he’d heard earlier.

Beside him, Chen Youzhi lit up a cigarette, causing the tip to glow in embers. "Want one?" He offered the box to He Juan, but the man refused with a faint smile.

"I only smoked that one time to release the pent-up stress. You too, don’t smoke too much," he couldn’t resist nagging a bit. "It’s not good for your health, you know." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Chen Youzhi let out a little huff. "Sure, I will try."

Silence lingered between them for a while. It wasn’t until Chen Youzhi’s cigarette burned midway that he spoke, "What do you think after hearing that, Boss? Was he really telling the truth? Personally, I don’t think that kiddo was lying, but... could that bastard really let him go for such a ridiculous reason?!"

"Ah, now that you brought it up..." He Juan raked his fingers through his hair, his eyebrows twitching in irritation despite the lingering smile on his face. "You don’t know him well, Chen’er, but that’s exactly the kind of person he is. He’s totally unreasonable and acts solely based on his own amusement. Why do you think he’s so obsessed with Doctor Jia?"

Chen Youzhi was stunned. "Don’t tell me..."

"That’s right," He Juan let out a mirthless laugh. "Just because Doctor Jia was a little too sharp for his own good and could see through the Manipulator’s disguise at a glance. It’s not even his fault, but look at him now. He has to be hounded by that bastard for nearly a decade. What I’m saying is, if he can be so obsessed with Jia Molei just because of that reason, it’s only natural for him to let Zhong Yun live because the young man challenged him. And to think that I’ve contemplated so many reasons..." he clicked his tongue and shook his head exasperatedly. "I shouldn’t have tried to understand that madman’s way of thinking."

Chen Youzhi slowly processed the information and nodded, "Well, if you say it like that... it kinda makes sense. Screw that bastard," he couldn’t help but curse the man as he took another deep drag of his cigarette, tendrils of smoke curling around him.

Feeling slightly amused, He Juan couldn’t suppress a chuckle. "I couldn’t agree more."

Chen Youzhi exhaled and tossed the burnt cigarette to the ground, snuffing the remnants of embers with his foot. "Even after knowing that, are you still going to involve him and the police in this, Boss? You heard what that kid was saying. Once you step into that place, it would be no different than delivering yourself to them."

Even though Chen Youzhi did not elaborate on who the ’him’ he was talking about, He Juan understood it nonetheless. A helpless exhale escaped him, accompanied by a subtle, resigned smile. "I know, but don’t you think it’s time for me to stop running away and confront them head-on? I... I left him once seven years ago, Chen’er. I abandoned him when he needed me the most. This time, I swear that I will do everything it takes to stay. I don’t want to make him sad again..." his voice petered off into a soft murmur, his smile wistful. But he soon brought himself out of his melancholic state and added in a more cheerful tone,

"Also, have you overlooked something important? An enemy might be waiting for me there, but at the same time, I also have allies!"

When Chen Youzhi gave him a puzzled look, He Juan chuckled and told him all about Kang Guanyu. "...I hadn’t intended to implicate an ordinary citizen, but who could have guessed that he would be Mu Yuze’s colleague? This world is surprisingly small, don’t you think so?"

Chen Youzhi was equally amazed at the shocking turns of events. "Indeed, fate works in a mysterious way."

"Fate, huh?" He Juan mused.

Shifting his gaze skyward, he watched the inky space devoid of stars. "Perhaps, you can say that everything is fate. But one thing I know for sure, this is what I need to go through if I want to remain by his side from now on."
