Chapter 623: Morse Code

"Hello, I’m here for the daily check-up."

Holding a clipboard to her chest, a nurse approached the officers stationed along the hallway with a nervous smile. Spotting her, a policewoman stepped forward and stated in a friendly yet firm tone. "Hello, please take out everything in your pockets and put your arms up. Don’t worry, this is just a protocol."

The nurse hurriedly nodded and carried out the instructions. After the body check, it was determined that the nurse was clear, and only then did the policewoman give a signal to her colleagues.

"You may enter. Thank you for your cooperation..." she glanced at the nametag on the nurse’s chest. "Nurse Yu."

"T–Thank you..." With a lingering trace of nervousness on her face, Nurse Yu accepted her belongings and shuffled through the hallway. If one had not known better, they would have thought this was a prison from the amount of guards keeping vigil at every corner of the floor. Unable to help herself, she released a relieved sigh and wiped the sweat on her forehead before sliding the door open and stepping in.

"Good evening, Mr. Luo," she greeted the patient inside cheerfully. "I’m here for the daily check-up. How are you feeling today?"

The man on the bed barely turned his head to regard her. "...Good."

He looked extremely delicate and fragile with his pale complexion and sickly pallor. Connected to him were the IV drip and heartbeat monitor which regularly recorded his pulses. His chest rose and fell with each breath he took, tresses of his long brown hair fanning around him like a golden halo. Upon closer inspection, his long lashes resembled a pair of quivering wings about to take flight.

Despite having tended to the patient a few times over the course of his stay, she still couldn’t help but be amazed by his beauty. It was unbelievable how he looked even more beautiful than average women out there.

Well, she supposed that’s just how Omegas were. Alas, it was too bad that...

She shook her head quietly, still unable to wrap her head around the fact that such an omega was being treated worse than prisoners on death row.

Entering work mode, she performed the basic examinations and jotted down all the data. "Are you feeling uncomfortable somewhere? We decided to switch your painkiller because you said that it was not working. Do tell me or the other nurses if you’re feeling any discomfort, okay?" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Luo Xuan merely gave a hum, not even deigning to open his eyes.

Nurse Yu did not leave after completing the routine check. Instead, she leaned closer to Luo Xuan and exclaimed, "Oh dear, your needle is a bit askew. Let me fix it for you real quick!" Gently grasping his arm, she deftly undid the bandages. It was precisely at that moment that Luo Xuan opened his eyes.

For he could feel her fingers dancing intermittently on his arm, tapping a code he was extremely familiar with— Morse Code.

[Hello, Boss.]

He slowly shifted his gaze to her and found that her sweet and earnest expression had transformed into a mischievous grin he knew all too well. From his peripheral vision, he could spot an officer peering through the glass panel, so he very naturally closed his eyes again. "...Thank you."

[What took you so long?]

[Sorry, I was having too much fun playing around.]

[...]

[Please wait a little longer, Boss.]

[What about XIU?]

[He...]

The officer slid the door open, inquiring in mild alarm, "Is there a problem with him, Miss Nurse?"

"Oh!" the female nurse – or to be exact Ku Jin in disguise – finished wrapping the bandages and straightened up, blurting out the answer in a haste, "I noticed a bit of bleeding in the tube, so I adjusted the needle to make him more comfortable. There’s no problem at all, officer!"

He clutched the clipboard to his chest once more, smiling timidly at the officer before stepping out. Soon, he reached a desolate hallway and murmured quietly under his breath, "Haa, fuck them all. Watching him so closely like a hawk..."

Upon reaching the nurse station, he put up his mask and jogged lightly to the others. He patted his chest with a terrified look and quipped, "Oh God, I could never get used to this. They are all so scary!"

The other nurses snickered, "Well, you can’t escape any longer – we drew lots for this."

"I know, I know," he grumbled as she handed over the clipboard. Biting down on his lips, he showed a pained grimace and covered his stomach. "Ah, I think I need to make a quick trip to the bathroom. Please cover for me for a while!"

He spun around and dashed away, but instead of making his way to the bathroom like he said he would, he slipped into the emergency exit right next to it. And when he emerged again on another floor, he no longer wore a nurse uniform, but casual sportswear with his long hair tied in a ponytail and a hat completing the look. He weaved through the bustling hallway, seamlessly blending in with a family of four as though he was their big sister and eldest daughter.

But before he could ditch the group and proceed to his next destination, a familiar silhouette brought him to an abrupt halt.

"Oho," he whistled softly and pulled the brim of his hat lower. "What is that bastard doing here?"

Even though his eyes only lingered for a fleeting moment, He Juan immediately whipped his head around, his sharp and wary gaze scanning the surroundings.

"Is there something wrong, Boss?" Chen Youzhi asked, his spine straightening by reflex due to He Juan’s sudden change of demeanor.

He Juan’s brows creased into deep lines. At a glance, he noticed nothing amiss, but... what’s up with the sickeningly peculiar sensation crawling down his spine just seconds ago? It vanished as quickly as it appeared, but there was no way He Juan could mistake it—

"The Manipulator is here," he revealed grimly.

Chen Youzhi jerked in surprise, and it was only thanks to his ironclad self-control that he managed to stop himself from exclaiming out loud. It did not mean he was calm, though. Heart thundering in his chest, he kept his gaze forward and assumed a natural and casual gait. "Where?"

"I’m not sure..." He Juan muttered. His gaze eventually narrowed on the crowd that had just brushed past him before he stuffed the medical record he had just retrieved into Chen Youzhi’s chest. "I will be right back. Tell everyone to watch over all entrances!"

"Wait, Boss—" Taken aback, Chen Youzhi tried to stop his impulsive act, but he was a beat too late – He Juan had already dashed away. "Damn it!"
