Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 639: The Only Person
It was raining lightly when He Juan got out of the car and stepped into the hotel where he had agreed to meet Ye Qiu.
He rode the elevator to the floor where the presidential suite was, wiping the dampness away from his shoulders. Soon, the elevator arrived with a ding. Walking down the empty hallway, he approached the only room on the floor and pressed the doorbell. It swung open after a brief wait.
"You..." His pupils dilated in surprise as he took in the familiar yet foreign appearance of the young man before him. His hair was neat and short, eyes deep and profound. Despite his young age, he stood almost as tall as He Juan. At a glance, He Juan could tell that he was a mutated Alpha, yet strangely the young man managed to exude a calm aura rather than intimidation. The name was already hanging on the tip of He Juan’s tongue, yet he just couldn’t remember it no matter what.
"XIU, I’m so glad to see you again," the young man greeted him with a smile.
From inside, a loud crash reverberated as if something heavy had fallen to the ground, followed by a bellow from an unfamiliar voice, "XIU is here already?! Jie, he’s here!!!"
The young man palmed his forehead helplessly and shot an apologetic look at He Juan. "Sorry, Ye Hu has been very nervous to meet you."
Ye Hu. One of Ye Qiu’s brothers. The little boy who had undergone manifestation in the middle of the street and caused a massacre – with one of the victims being his little brother’s lover.
All that information crossed He Juan’s mind at the speed of lightning. His emotions stirred, only to return to placid calmness in the next second. He remembered those facts, but he could no longer evoke the same intensity of feelings as when he learned them for the first time. The anger, guilt, sorrow— all of them had become muted. Was it normal for him to feel like this with everyone except Mu Yuze? He Juan had no idea.
Ye Qiu’s figure soon appeared in their line of sight, clad only in a short-sleeved shirt and baggy pants. Her muscular arms were marred with scars both heavy and light. She lightly slapped the back of the young man’s head, scolding, "Ye Gu, what are you doing, blocking the door like that? Invite him inside first. And XIU, good morning to you."
"Oh my, look at my poor manners." Ye Gu – He Juan finally remembered his name – slapped his forehead and stepped aside, opening the door wider. "Come in, XIU."
He Juan maintained his cordial smile as he walked in. "Pardon my intrusion. It has been so long since I’ve seen you. How have you been?"
"Yes, I’m doing well. We all do," Ye Gu replied with a smile.
Entering the suite, He Juan finally saw Ye Hu, who was fidgeting and radiating nervous energy. As their gazes collided in midair, Ye Hu straightened up and squeaked out, "X–XIU, good to see you again!" He had grown out his hair until below his ears and tied it into a half ponytail. Just like Ye Gu, he had also grown tall and broad, a typical physique belonging to an Alpha. Yet somehow his demeanor had not changed at all, bringing back a semblance of familiarity for He Juan.
Aware that the young man had not fully put the past behind him, He Juan attempted to put on a friendly look, "Yes, it’s nice to see you again too. You have grown up well, Ye Hu."
Ye Hu visibly relaxed and scratched his head sheepishly, "Well, ain’t it all thanks to our Jie?"
Shortly after, Ye Qiu reappeared from the pantry with a tray of drinks.
The four of them settled on the sofas and caught up with each other for a while. He Juan learned that among the six, only three had ended up manifesting as an Alpha, while the other three remained as Betas. They had stuck together after all these years, and after Ye Qiu rose to position as the drug lord, her two brothers became her most trusted subordinates. Last time, they couldn’t visit He Juan in the hospital because they had to hold the fort while Ye Qiu was away. But now, upon hearing about Ye Qiu’s plans to return to China, they clamored to tag along as well.
He Juan shifted the discussion to the purpose of his visit. "So, what is so secretive about your discovery that you have to talk to me in person?"
Ye Qiu signaled to Ye Gu with her eyes, and the young man left briefly only to return with a stack of documents. As He Juan perused them seriously, she explained, 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
"I picked up the investigation from where you left off, but it’s not so easy. After Luo Xuan’s accident, they cut off their tails and went into hiding, and every lead you had thus far turned out to be dead ends. So I changed my approach. Isn’t it their ultimate goal to create X serum? They needed a mutated omega to achieve that, and given how Luo Xuan was in a coma, they were bound to seek a replacement.
"You might not be aware of this, XIU, but in recent years, we – as in all of us experimented people – have gathered to form a secret organization. It is through this organization that we can help and support each other, connect with our kind, and aid those who are still out there. Using this network, we managed to locate a few mutated Omegas who have mysteriously gone missing in London, Moscow and San Francisco. And following this trail led us to their secret facilities as well as their main sponsor."
The movement of He Juan’s fingers paused as he reached the profile of a foreign man named Walker. "A businessman, philanthropist, and investor, huh?" According to the investigation results, this person had been very active traveling seven years ago, and the country he visited matched with the postcards He Juan had received from Luo Xuan. There was no doubt that this person was the one whom Luo Xuan had been meeting when he went on his so-called long vacation. "So he has been sponsoring the research? And what about those captured omegas? How are they doing now?"
"Fortunately, no lives were lost. You’re right, Mr. Walker is the primary investor, while the others are only there to fawn over him." Ye Qiu grabbed a document and flipped through it before handing it to He Juan. "This is the statistics of their experiments for the past five years."
He Juan took it and a frown appeared between his brows at the complex data and terminology. However, even amid the confusion, he could still discern something from the diagrams. "Heh," he sneered. "It seems like the experiment hasn’t yielded any real results?"
"That’s the gist," Ye Qiu wore a pensive look. "For some reason, Luo Xuan’s blood reacts differently to the reagents, unlike the others. It must be because Luo Xuan was the first mutated omega, while the others are just products from the X serum experiment and thus their blood is not as effective. In metaphor, it’s like comparing a pureblood and half-blood. To create the perfect X serum, Mr. Walker needs Luo Xuan."
He Juan cast her a faint glance, "So you’re saying that Luo Xuan is the only person in this world who can create the X serum."
