Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 656: Identical Modus Operandi
Walker’s death was confirmed to be an ordinary heart attack at first by the local bureau. However, due to his special identity, the police had no choice but to do an extensive and comprehensive investigation, and it was then that they discovered his clean medical record! This person had no history of heart disease at all, so how could he suddenly die of a heart attack?!
Due to this peculiar circumstance, the case was then passed to the city bureau and made its way to Li Zhi’s ears in the dead of the night.
Unfortunately, Captain Li was currently engrossed in perusing the files He Juan had just shared, and he did not have time to be wasted on another case. The sheer amount of information in these files left him utterly disoriented and stupefied, and the fact that the one who gathered it was XIU, was all people, made him extremely conflicted.
For the very first time, Li Zhi met the perfect embodiment of a gray character.
This man had openly confessed to murdering over twenty police officers, and that alone was enough for him to be locked up for the rest of his life. However, these files’ existence told him that XIU played a significant role in rescuing countless poor children who were wrongly imprisoned and experimented on. Even though his method did not abide by the law, it did not change the facts that he stood by justice.
When all this evidence was brought to the court, what would the judges’ reaction be? Li Zhi reckoned that this would be the most sensational trial of the year, if not in history.
What was more infuriating was his own internal conflict. He had resolved to ensure He Juan a life imprisonment at worst and a death penalty at best, but this shocking discovery... it actually made him waver! For fuck’s sake, how was he supposed to answer to his late comrades and captain if he was being this indecisive?!
With this turmoil brewing within him, Li Zhi merely gave Walker’s case file a fleeting glance when it was presented to him. "Have all the witnesses been questioned? Did the victim consume anything before his death? Has his blood been tested? Do we have permission from the family to perform an autopsy?"
"Err..." the officer fumbled for a moment before responding loudly, "Replying to the Captain! All witnesses have been questioned, no results. According to the staff, he requested a headache pill a few moments before his death, but it’s been confirmed that the pill is ordinary medicine, and he has no allergic reaction to it whatsoever. The blood test is also clean. He has no history of using drugs nor did he have any serious illness. We’re still trying to contact his family right now. Given his public figure status and foreign nationality, the Chief instructed you to place utmost importance to solve the case before the reporters blow it up, Captain!" 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Li Zhi paused. "The Chief? Our Chief Commissioner?"
"Yes, Sir!"
Now that drew Li Zhi’s attention. As far as he knew, Chief Yan had been treated in the hospital for a while due to arthritis, so he had practically handed almost all of his authority to Director Zhang, only acting as a supervisor.
Yet the order had come directly from the man himself?
With a pensive frown, Li Zhi grabbed the case file and skimmed through the information rapidly. Walker, aged 65, a US resident. He had arrived in China via a private plane and rested for a while in the VIP lounge upon landing, when the accident happened without a warning. He died of a heart attack, despite there being no history of heart-related issues...
Wait, what’s up with this nagging sense of déjà vu he was experiencing? Why did he feel like he had seen a similar case before?
After mulling over it for a while, he suddenly thought of something. Rising to his feet, he sifted through the thick stacks of documents on his table before pulling out the one that had almost been buried in the bottom. He flipped through it in haste before pausing on a certain page.
"Cause of death, heart attack. No history of heart illness, the blood test is clear..." he murmured, his breath hitching on his throat.
"Captain...?"
Snapping back to his senses, Li Zhi instructed the officer, "Copy this case file and share it to everyone. Announce that we’re going to have a meeting in twenty— no, fifteen minutes!"
The officer straightened up and saluted, "Yes, Sir!"
Left alone in his office, Li Zhi was stunned as he compared the two case files. The modus operandi was identical, almost as if... as if the culprit was the same person! Damn, was it the Master Manipulator again?! But what connection did Qin Zhen have with this foreigner?!
One was an ordinary citizen, while the other was a renowned figure in another country. No matter from which angle he inspected it, these two people hailed from different walks of life, and he could bet there was no connection between them whatsoever, unless...
It was not the victims he had to focus on, but the culprit.
By any chance, did Walker’s death have something to do with the secret experiment?!
As expected of the Captain of the Violent Crime Unit. In the matter of seconds, he could come up with various hypotheses, almost piercing through the veil of truth – unaware that he was unwittingly playing into He Juan’s elaborate scheme.
Alas...
They couldn’t even solve Qin Zhen’s case until now, so how were they supposed to proceed with Walker’s?! Moreover, Li Zhi’s theories were nothing but mere speculations, when in fact they hadn’t even obtained any evidence that the Master Manipulator was the one who had killed Qin Zhen!
Frustrated by his tangled thoughts, Li Zhi reached into his pocket and took out a cigarette, intending to have a smoke before he headed to the meeting room. He moved to the window and lit up the cigarette, but just as he was about to take a deep drag, a knock resounded on his door.
"Come in," Li Zhi said, his voice muffled by the cigarette in his mouth.
The door swung open, revealing Mu Yuze’s figure. "Captain," he greeted politely before entering and closing the door behind him. "I’ve read the case file. The victim’s cause of death is exactly the same as Qin Zhen."
Li Zhi hummed in agreement, not surprised that Mu Yuze could zero in on the fact so quickly. He was more intrigued by Mu Yuze’s unexpected presence in his office. "So what? If you have something to say, save it for the meeting later. Or..." he narrowed his gaze, his vision slightly blurred from the hazy smoke. "Do you know something else, Officer Mu?"
Pursing his lips tight, Mu Yuze stepped forward and placed a flash drive on the table. "I received this from my... informant."
