Chapter 659: A Gift

Late into the night, the lights in the office were still bright as the officers meticulously scoured through the surveillance footage. It was a long, tedious and utterly draining task that demanded their unwavering attention and focus.

Needless to say, no one got a wink of sleep, let alone go home to rest.

Officer Mu, who had not seen his Alpha for five hours, was experiencing a withdrawal symptom.

After staring at the computer screen for an hour straight, he slipped out of the office and headed to the emergency exit, sitting on the stairs for a brief respite. Had he been a smoker, he could have released his pent-up stress with cigarettes. But fortunately he had not developed such a habit despite being surrounded by heavy smokers every single day, or else He Juan might not like him as much.

"Haa..." he released a long sigh. Thinking of He Juan just made him want to see the man more. Unable to resist, he took out his phone, hesitated for a second before pressing the speed dial. The call was connected in an instant as if the other person had been waiting for it all along.

"Hello, Xiao Ze?" He Juan’s low and deep voice echoed within the emergency stairs, tinged with a hint of mirthful chuckle.

Mu Yuze, who wasn’t prepared, was caught off guard by the butterflies in his stomach brought about by that deep timbre. He couldn’t help but feel flustered. W–Why would Juan-gege pick up the call so quickly? In spite of that, he couldn’t suppress the subtle curve forming on the corner of his lips. It was unbelievable how the mere sound of He Juan’s voice could sweep away all of his exhaustion, filling him with a new surge of energy.

"Gege..." he breathed, holding the phone as close as possible to his ear so he could follow the rhythm of He Juan’s breathing. Amidst the silence of the night, he expressed his longing in a small and quiet voice, "I miss you..."

He Juan cooed, his tone oh so tender that it made Mu Yuze’s ears tingle, "I miss you too. Are you tired? Now I feel bad for making Officer Mu work so hard."

Mu Yuze shook his head quietly, only to realize that He Juan couldn’t see him now. He spoke into the phone, "No, I was tired but... not anymore."

His cheeks flushed crimson at the honest admission. Goodness, they had done more intimate acts, but why did it still feel so nerve-wracking to express his genuine feelings for He Juan? His ears were practically on fire when the Alpha laughed softly, having sensed the hidden implication behind his words. It sounded so low and smooth, making his ears feel ticklish like they were being caressed by a gentle feather.

In a fluster, Mu Yuze blurted out the first thing that came to mind, "W–What about you? Aren’t you tired?" Only after he said that did realization strike him like lightning. He whipped his head to check the time, and a horrified gasp escaped his lips. "It’s past midnight, why aren’t you asleep yet?! You were having a headache this morning!"

Stupid Mu Yuze! He berated himself endlessly. He had witnessed with his own eyes how horrible He Juan’s state was this morning, so why would he still give the man a call without checking the time first?! What if he had disturbed He Juan’s rest?!

Full of guilt, Mu Yuze asked softly, "Were you sleeping when I called you?"

"No, I had a little rest earlier, so don’t worry. It’s not that bad," He Juan assured, which was definitely a lie.

If they had not shared a room last night, he might not have known the full extent of the side effects He Juan had to endure – he was in so much pain that he almost puked his guts out in the bathroom. It was due to He Juan’s insistence that he did not call the ambulance right there and then.

Speaking of the side effects, Mu Yuze belatedly realized He Juan had not mentioned anything about the accident he had been through, despite having given his statement. It was because the information he revealed was so shocking that this matter slipped off Mu Yuze’s mind completely.

Why did it seem like... He Juan intentionally leave out that part?

Alas, before he could delve deeper into that thought, He Juan’s words distracted him. "I’m serious," he said with a chuckle, as if sensing Mu Yuze’s doubt. "You can ask Chen Youzhi. I was just sparring at him before you called."

"Sparring?" Mu Yuze echoed with his brows furrowed. "At a time like this?"

"Mn," He Juan replied casually. "It’s the only way to burn off all the pent-up energy I have within me."

Those words reminded Mu Yuze of the fact that He Juan’s rut was approaching, and his face immediately went ablaze. Usually, an Alpha nearing his rut period would be more irritable, sensitive and territorial. Even the slightest problem could set them off, just like a landmine. However, during the days they spent together, Mu Yuze had not detected any of these signs from He Juan. He acted so normally that Mu Yuze almost forgot about his rut. Now that he pondered more about it, He Juan must have been suppressing his instincts around him, and the only way the Alpha could let out all those pent-up emotions was through a heavy exercise.

"A–Are you sure you’re fine?" he stammered, which was a far cry from the original question he wanted to ask.

Are you sure you want to spend your rut alone? Why would you do that... when you have me by your side?

Alas, Mu Yuze was too much of a coward to ask that. He didn’t think he could recover from the damage if He Juan were to refuse him outright.

"What can happen to me?" He Juan laughed, sounding carefree and light. "I’m doing very well. On the contrary, it’s you..." he sighed. "I have to trouble Officer Mu to suffer for a few more days. The Manipulator won’t be so easy to find."

"Don’t worry, it’s my job." Chewing on his lips, Mu Yuze couldn’t resist adding, "I’m stronger than you think, Gege. So... you don’t have to treat me like I’m fragile."

He squeezed the phone and held his breath sharply as he waited for He Juan’s response. He was certain that, with how keen and perceptive the Alpha was, he could easily guess the hidden meaning behind Mu Yuze’s words. This was the best Mu Yuze could convey without explicitly expressing his intentions.

Unfortunately, he was bound to be disappointed when He Juan merely responded with a light chuckle, though his voice carried a hint of hoarseness,

"How can I not worry? I know you’re strong, but my heart will still ache if something happens to you, okay? Ah, that’s right, I almost forgot about this. I have a gift for you, as thanks to my little mate for working so hard..." Mu Yuze’s ears flushed again when he heard that. "...it should have arrived by now."

"What is it?" Curious, Mu Yuze stood up and exited the emergency stairs, just in time to catch a few delivery personnel appearing from the other end of the hallway, carrying huge plastic bags with them. It was an extremely familiar sight.

"Food delivery from Mr. He, for the Violent Crime Unit!"

"Again—?!"

"Holy shit, another food delivery? I’m positive, he’s trying to bribe us!"

"Perfect, just as I’m getting hungry!"

The gloomy atmosphere in the office immediately turned lively as the officers scrambled to receive the plastic bags like a pack of starving wolves who had not seen meat for months.

"A midnight snack?" The corner of Mu Yuze’s lips twitched into a faint amused smile. "Thank you, Gege, but you can just tell me directly. Why would you act all mysterious and secretive?"

In lieu of an answer, He Juan chuckled softly and said, "I hope you like it." After that, they hung up on the call and Mu Yuze returned to the office. Stepping in, he was welcomed by the sight of his colleagues drooling over the piping hot congee.

"Damn it, there is meat, vegetables, herbs and even a century egg! It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten something so healthy!"

"What a nice break from all the instant noodles and oily pig trotters!"

"Wahh, even my mom hasn’t sent me something so good in all the years I’ve worked here!"

"Mu Yuze!" Kang Guanyu waved at him and pointed at his table. "There’s a separate bag with your name on it, it’s on your table!"

Mu Yuze gave him an ’OK’ gesture and walked toward his table, and sure enough, there was a plastic bag there. He almost couldn’t suppress a silly smile on his face. It was just yesterday that he threw a temper tantrum, saying how He Juan had acted so cold and harsh to him, so was this the man’s attempt to give him special treatment?

Hehe, that’s so... cute.

It was fortunate that everyone was too absorbed with their food or else they would definitely be shocked by the sight of Officer Mu’s foolish and giddy smile. Settling into his seat, Mu Yuze carefully opened the bag and took out the takeaway bowl, acting as if he was unwrapping a gift. However, his movement abruptly paused when he caught sight of a small folded piece of paper on the bottom.

What was this? A greeting card?

Curious, Mu Yuze opened it and saw a few strings of words that made his eyes go wide.

Toll number 4. 20.23 pm. YB6666. Black Volkswagen. I hope you like the gift ;)

It was clearly He Juan’s handwriting, and this information...

Sucking in a breath, Mu Yuze set aside his porridge and turned to his computer, pulling up the surveillance footage from the toll booth at the exact time He Juan had mentioned. It was the part he had not checked. And sure enough, an ordinary black Volkswagen appeared on the screen and stopped at the manual lane.

In the next moment, the tinted windows rolled down, only wide enough for a slender hand to offer a toll card. It was simply impossible to identify a person based on their hand alone, but perhaps the God and Devil were at play, another car drove through from the opposite lane, its bright headlights flooding onto the black sedan.

It was only a split second, but it was more than enough for someone with keen eyes as Mu Yuze to notice that the car carried a passenger in the shotgun seat, and their face... he couldn’t be more familiar with it.

It was none other than Jia Molei’s face!

That meant, the person in the driver seat was...

Mu Yuze crushed the small paper in his hand and abruptly stood up from his seat, sending the chair rolling across the floor.

"Captain!" He called in a loud voice, barely able to suppress his excitement. "I found him!"
