Chapter 660: As Thanks

As soon as Mu Yuze’s last words settled in the air, the officers who were busy stuffing their mouths with porridge immediately put down their bowls and rushed toward Mu Yuze’s table with a fervor. "Where? Where is he?! Have you really located that bastard?!!!"

Li Zhi slurped down his porridge and tossed the plastic bowl to the trash bin before heading over. Without delay, Mu Yuze replayed the footage he had just inspected. "Pay attention to this car," he directed, pointing at the sleek black Volkswagen. "Look at the person in the shotgun seat."

A crowd of officers leaned in to scrutinize the screen closer, and from their mouths echoed a chorus of ’ooh’ and ’ahh’ before it eventually morphed into:

"Damn, isn’t that Doctor Jia?!"

"Right, right, that’s the person the Manipulator has taken hostage back in the harbor!"

"Fuck, it means the other person is that son of a bitch!"

"Captain, you’re spot on! The Manipulator was really at the airport during the time of Walker’s death. Could he really be the culprit?!"

Li Zhi wasted no time and promptly demanded for Ku Jin to be tracked down. "It’s been over three hours, we need to move fast. Contact the traffic police and tell them to locate this car! Mark the routes he took, and pay attention to the Manipulator’s appearance this time!" Turning to Mu Yuze, he added, "Good job, Officer Mu. You’ve managed to save us a lot of time."

In the face of his Captain’s praise, Mu Yuze remained cool-headed and composed. "As I should be," he replied with his hands clasped behind his back, concealing the little piece of paper that he had received from his Alpha.

Thanks to this breakthrough, the officers in the Violent Crime Unit did not have to stay up until morning just to scour through surveillance footage for evidence whose existence they couldn’t even confirm. Some were dispatched to the traffic bureau to assist in tracking down the black Volkswagen, while those awaiting updates were granted a few hours of rest. As for the latter category, they were too lazy to return home and opted to crash in the office instead so that they could resume duty as soon as the sky lit up— all of them, except Mu Yuze.

"You’re going home?!" Kang Guanyu exclaimed in surprise.

Mu Yuze merely waved a hand with no intention of explaining further. "I need to grab something. Call me if there’s an update." Gathering his phone, wallet and car key, he walked out of the office in large strides, half running and half jogging. Simultaneously, he pressed on the speed dial in his phone.

It was connected after two rings. "Do you like the gift?" He Juan asked in lieu of the usual greetings, a hint of mirth and anticipation in his tone.

Instead of answering, Mu Yuze countered with a question of his own. "Where are you?" he asked in a low voice, though if one paid more attention, they would be able to hear the obvious urgency in his tone.

"Xiao Ze?" He Juan’s tone shifted to mild alarm. "What is it? Did something happen?"

Mu Yuze’s jaws remained tightly clenched as he exited the building, making a beeline to his car. He pressed the button on the key to unlock the door and slipped in, slamming the door behind him. The sound must have traveled to the other side because He Juan continued to ask, "Are you in the car now?"

Seated in his car, Mu Yuze stayed still for a few seconds and took a few deep breaths to calm himself. He knew that he was acting recklessly right now, but he just couldn’t help himself.

Today had been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for him.

From morning until late in the evening, he had to take He Juan’s full statement regarding the secret experiments and mutants. There were so many eyes around them, so Mu Yuze couldn’t act out of line for fear of arousing suspicion. He Juan’s position in the police’s eyes was already precarious to begin with, and Mu Yuze wouldn’t allow himself to exacerbate it by adding their relationship into the mix.

After all, even with them behaving carefully around each other, astute officers like Chen Lian had displayed some suspicions. That’s all the more reason why Mu Yuze must not do anything that could get his Juan-gege into trouble, no matter how much it was killing him inside...

At least, that had been his resolution until he received He Juan’s ’gift’. It might only be a piece of paper with a few simple words written on it, but how could Mu Yuze, of all people, not know how difficult it was to obtain it?

Granted, He Juan must have a lot of people who would run errands for him, and he might not necessarily be the one who had sifted through the surveillance records, but when Mu Yuze thought of the things He Juan had done for him, his small yet thoughtful gestures, his warm yet careful affection... he was suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to see He Juan, to touch him, hug him, breathe in his scent – so much that it was driving him insane.

He wanted – no, he needed to see He Juan right now.

"Mn," he hummed in affirmation, igniting the engine. "Thanks to you, I have a few hours of rest. Where are you now? Are you home?" Even uttering the word ’home’ was enough to make his tongue feel numb and ticklish. His heart felt like it was scratched by a kitten’s paw, and the flutter went all the way to his stomach.

"I... am in Chen Youzhi’s place." Too consumed by the intensity of his emotions, Mu Yuze failed to notice the subtle pause in He Juan’s reply. "Zhong Yun is also here. Will you come?"

Mu Yuze paused for a second before raising his head to stare at the tall and imposing building before him. Although this was an extremely familiar place where he had spent the majority of his days over the past few years, somehow it gave off a slightly foreign impression tonight. Perhaps because he knew that somewhere within its walls lurked a person who was colluding with the Master Manipulator to ruin his high school friend’s life.

All of a sudden, a few questions emerged in his mind, unbidden.

How many eyes were on him right now? Would it be okay for him to meet He Juan? What if he put Zhong Yun in danger just because of his reckless desire?

As if sensing his concern and doubt, He Juan reassured him softly, "Don’t worry, everything will be fine. I’ve had people keeping an eye on the area, and you will be notified at once if you’re followed. But I’m sure Officer Mu will be the first one to notice it when the time comes, won’t he?"

That firm reassurance mixed with the usual teasing managed to put Mu Yuze at ease like no one ever could. It was truly magical how effortlessly this person could convince him that nothing bad would happen as long as he was there. Whether it was ten years ago or now, this aspect of He Juan had not changed at all.

The corner of Mu Yuze’s lips curved into a faint smile as he shifted the gearstick and drove out of the parking lot. "Give me the address. And oh, Gege?"

"Hmm?"

"I’m going to give you a kiss," he dropped a bomb on He Juan out of nowhere. His smile widened in glee upon hearing He Juan choking on his spit from the other side. "You know, as thanks for the gift."
