Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 32: Six Days of Wrong
Kaito sat at the kitchen table. The coffee was cold. He did not drink it.
The phone screen was bright in the dim room. The news app was open. The headline was bold.
Unusual Weather Damage in Grey District.
He scrolled down. The photo showed a brick building. The wall was blackened. Scorch marks ran in jagged lines. They looked like lightning. They looked like claws.
Kaito thought: That was Tuesday.
He remembered the fight. It was behind the textile factory. Raikou had been new. The entity was still learning control. The lightning had arced wide. It had hit the wall.
Kaito thought: I missed a spot.
He locked the phone. He set it down. The screen went dark.
Raikou said: "That looks dramatic."
Kaito said: "It is visible."
Raikou said: "It is art. It is signature."
Kaito said: "It is evidence."
Kuro said: "It is stupidity."
Kaito did not answer. He stood up. He picked up the mug. He poured the coffee into the sink.
He thought: Five cracks in six days.
He thought: Three of them left traces.
He thought: The city is noticing.
He put on his jacket. He checked the pockets. The cards were secure. They hummed against his ribs. Raikou was restless. The lightning wanted to move.
Kaito said: "Stay."
Raikou said: "I am bored."
Kaito said: "Wait."
Raikou said: "Fine. But the grid is singing today. It wants to play."
Kaito ignored him. He opened the door. He stepped into the hallway.
The street was normal. People walked to the station. Cars waited at lights. The sun was behind clouds.
Kaito walked toward the school. He kept his head down. He watched the corners. He watched the alleys.
He saw the first crack site. It was sealed. The air shimmered slightly. Most people walked past. One woman stopped. She rubbed her arm. She looked at the wall. She kept walking.
Kaito thought: They feel it.
He thought: They do not know what it is.
He thought: But they know something is wrong.
He reached the school gate. Ryota was waiting. He held two vending machine coffees.
Ryota said: "You look tired."
Kaito said: "I am fine."
Ryota said: "That is the default answer. It is also incorrect."
Kaito took the coffee. It was hot. He held it with both hands.
Ryota said: "Did you see the news."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Ryota said: "Weird weather. My mom said the power flickered all night. In the Grey District."
Kaito said: "Storms happen."
Ryota said: "Not like this. There are pictures. Burn marks on brick. No fire. Just burns."
Kaito took a sip. The heat helped. It did not fix the cold feeling in his chest.
Kaito said: "Coincidence."
Ryota said: "Five times in a week. That is a lot of coincidence."
Kaito did not answer. He walked toward the building. Ryota followed. He matched Kaito’s pace.
Ryota said: "Jin says patterns matter."
Kaito said: "Jin is right."
Ryota said: "So there is a pattern."
Kaito said: "There is always a pattern."
Ryota said: "You are being vague. It is annoying. But I respect the commitment."
They entered the classroom. Hana was at her desk. She was looking out the window. She turned when they entered.
She looked at Kaito. She looked at the coffee. She looked at his hands.
Hana said: "You read the article."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Hana said: "What do you think."
Kaito said: "Weather."
Hana said: "You do not believe that."
Kaito said: "It is the explanation."
Hana said: "It is not the truth."
Kaito sat down. He put the coffee on the desk. He did not open his bag. He kept his hands still.
Hana said: "Something is happening."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Hana said: "Are you involved."
Kaito said: "I am here."
Hana studied him. Her eyes were sharp. She did not push. She filed the answer.
The bell rang. The teacher entered. The class began.
Kaito did not take notes. He listened. He watched the clock.
Raikou said: "The electricity in this room is dull."
Kaito said: "Focus."
Raikou said: "I am observing. The humans are fragile. The walls are thin."
Kaito said: "Silence."
Raikou said: "You are no fun. The raven agrees. He is also boring."
Kuro said: "I am prudent. There is a difference." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Kaito ignored them. He looked at the window. The sky was grey. The clouds were low.
He thought: The cover is breaking.
He thought: Two years of clean work.
He thought: Now this.
The day passed slowly. Each hour felt like a day. Each minute felt like an hour.
Lunch came. Kaito went to the roof. Ryota and Jin followed. Hana stayed behind. She had a student council meeting.
Ryota said: "The wind is weird."
Jin said: "Pressure drop."
Ryota said: "Storm coming."
Jin said: "Maybe."
Kaito ate his sandwich. He did not taste it. He watched the city below. The Grey District was visible in the distance. A haze hung over it.
Kaito thought: That is not fog.
He thought: That is residue.
He thought: I need to clean it.
Jin said: "You are checking the district."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Jin said: "Be careful."
Kaito said: "Always."
Jin said: "The pattern is accelerating."
Kaito looked at him. Jin did not look back. He was looking at the sky.
Kaito said: "You see it."
Jin said: "I see the gaps."
Kaito said: "Okay."
Jin said: "Do not fill them alone."
Kaito did not answer. He finished the sandwich. He stood up.
The bell rang. They went back inside.
The last class was math. Kaito solved the equations. He did not write the answers. He just solved them in his head.
Raikou said: "Why do you do this."
Kaito said: "Practice."
Raikou said: "For what."
Kaito said: "Control."
Raikou said: "You cannot control the storm. You can only ride it."
Kaito said: "Then I will ride it."
Raikou said: "That is the spirit. Literally."
School ended. Kaito walked home. He did not take the train. He walked through the streets. He watched the people.
They looked tired. They looked uneasy. They checked their phones. They checked the sky.
He reached the Grey District. The air was heavier here. The smell of ozone was strong.
He stopped at the building with the scorch marks. The news photo was accurate. The marks were deep. They glowed faintly in the twilight.
Kaito placed his hand on the wall. It was warm.
Kaito thought: Raikou’s signature.
He thought: I cannot erase this.
He thought: I can only mask it.
He pushed his will into the brick. He smoothed the energy. The glow faded. The marks remained. They looked like old damage now. Not fresh.
Kaito said: "Better."
Raikou said: "It is still there."
Kaito said: "It is less."
Kaito walked away. He went home. He locked the door.
He sat at the desk. He opened the notebook. He turned to the latest page.
He wrote: Day 50.
He wrote: Five cracks.
He wrote: One visible.
He put the pen down. He stared at the words.
Kuro said: "The lie is thinning."
Kaito said: "I know."
Kuro said: "They will ask questions."
Kaito said: "They are asking."
Kuro said: "Soon they will want answers."
Kaito said: "I know."
Kuro said: "What will you tell them."
Kaito looked at the cards. They were spread on the desk. Fourteen cards. Fourteen secrets.
Kaito said: "Nothing."
Kuro said: "That will not work forever."
Kaito said: "It has to."
He gathered the cards. He put them in the deck. He put the deck in the pocket.
He stood up. He turned off the light. The room went dark.
He walked to the window. He looked at the city. The lights were on. The streets were busy.
It looked normal. It felt fragile.
Kaito thought: Six days of wrong.
He thought: Tomorrow will be worse.
He thought: I will be there.
He stayed at the window for a long time. The city hummed. The power grid sang. Raikou hummed along with it.
Kaito said: "Sleep."
Raikou said: "Later."
Kaito did not argue. He went to bed. He lay down. He closed his eyes.
He did not sleep immediately. He listened to the sounds of the building. The pipes. The wires. The wind.
Everything was connected. Everything was straining.
He thought: The pattern is clear.
He thought: The cover is breaking.
He thought: I am running out of time.
Sleep came eventually. It was shallow. He dreamed of lightning. He dreamed of news headlines. He dreamed of Hana’s eyes asking questions he could not answer.
Morning would come. The news would update. The cracks would widen.
Kaito would wake up. He would put on the jacket. He would check the cards.
He would go out. He would fix what he could. He would hide what he could not.
The city would survive another day. The lie would hold for another day.
But the count was rising.
The intervals were shortening.
The wrongness was spreading.
Kaito slept. The cards waited. The city held its breath.
