CEO, Your Wife Has Left-Chapter 82: Heart-shaped Cotton Candy
"Caleb, the truth is, I’m an overthinker." Summer lowered her head. ’Maybe Kenneth was just making an excuse. Maybe it wasn’t what I thought. Maybe he really did have something on tonight.’ But she had already thought about it so much, and she was scared.
"I know."
"You know?"
They had known each other for many years. Caleb Bell had always kept an eye on her, so he knew her personality like the back of his hand.
"Come to my place," Caleb Bell said, looking at her.
"Would that be appropriate?" Summer asked worriedly. He had his own private life, after all.
"It’s fine. I live alone."
"Then I’ll have to trouble you. I can just sleep on the couch."
After leaving Summer behind, Kenneth Yates drove to the riverside alone. This was where he had met Thea Shaw. It was right here that he had fallen for her at first sight. They had talked happily until late into the night, and in the end, Kenneth had even walked her home. By chance, he later discovered that she went to the same school as him. Afterward, she confessed her feelings to him, and the two of them naturally got together. The memories of youth are impossible to erase. No matter how much of a playboy he became later in life, he could never get that feeling back.
The ground was already covered with cigarette butts. The river still shimmered under the light, but the people had changed—from two to one.
Kenneth Yates was confused. He loved Summer, yet he hated it when she brought up his memories of Thea Shaw. He didn’t even know himself what he felt for Thea now. Suddenly, he recalled Noel Lynch’s words: The maiden is willing, but the gentleman is not.
He walked alone along the river for a long time. The woman who sold cotton candy all those years ago was still there. Kenneth Yates walked over and saw the colorful cotton candy.
"Buy one?" the woman called out to him.
"No, I’m just looking." Kenneth Yates took a small step back, standing off to the side.
"Young man, is something bothering you? If it’s a matter of the heart and your girl is upset, just buy her a cotton candy and she’ll be thrilled. It’s not about how much it costs; it’s the thought that counts. You men will never understand a girl’s heart." A warm smile spread across the woman’s face. "I remember a few years ago, a boy came to buy cotton candy. He was a very thoughtful person. He actually asked me to make it in the shape of a heart. I bet he was buying it for his girlfriend. I even made a special rainbow-colored one for him. That girl must have been so happy when she saw it."
Kenneth Yates turned and walked away from the cotton candy stall. Hearing the woman talk about the past filled him with a wave of inexplicable sadness. ’That’s right—the boy she was talking about was me. I never thought she would still remember me after so many years.’
He wandered around by himself for a long time. He glanced at his watch—it was very late. He took out his phone, about to ask Ronan Jenkins if he had gotten Summer home safely, but just then, his phone rang. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Mom? Why are you calling so late?"
"Get to the city hospital, fast! Mr. West said Reina took sleeping pills at home. That girl was screaming that she wanted to see you..."
"Okay, I’m on my way."
Twenty minutes later, Kenneth Yates rushed to the city hospital. Lianne Vance and Reina West’s parents were all waiting outside the operating room.
"Mom, how is she?"
Lianne Vance’s face was etched with worry. "She’s still in the ER. They said she took a lot of sleeping pills." The West Family and the Yates Family had been close for generations. No one wanted to see something like this happen, and Kenneth Yates was the one who had set it all off.
