Chapter 87: Maximus has his reasons for whatever he does

Grandpa Leo wanted to hear everything that was going on and the plan that Max had set up, after keeping him in the dark for so long.

Mariam was finally able to come to terms that Tiana was indeed her mother and cried in her arms. Though she still had her eyes out for Valerie in case she indeed had a hidden motive.

Funny how no one blamed Tiana for abandoning them and allowing them to suffer the pain of their separation while thinking she was dead.

Well, in their defense, it wasn’t like she went away to enjoy life or shit like that, she went to an Asylum. She lived in a place meant for deranged and mad people for seven years.

She didn’t have it easy so why should they blame her?

Max sat everyone down and told them everything about the wedding and what he intended to do with Ross on a whole, and he asked that they had to play along that day.

"Are you sure you’re okay with this?" Grandpa Leo asked Valerie and all eyes fell on her. "Your parents’ hardwork, if you’re not careful, you could make the entire company crash."

Valerie went silent and bowed her head, staring at her hands.

This would definitely affect the company badly. Bernard Ross had made such a mess of the company that once exposed, the reputation of Ross would plummet but... She could not let it go on any further.

She looked up and nodded.

"Even if it falls, there will be other ways to raise it abck up in the future." She said out loud. ’And if worse comes to worse,’ her eyes tried to Max sitting next to her. ’I’ll give the company to Max. That should strengthen his position in Stewart. I can tell he’s got great business sense.’ she smiled.

"Well, no matter your decision, I’ll support you." Grandpa Leo said. "That’s the least I can do for you."

"That’s right, darling." Tiana said. "We’ve got your back."

Valerie nodded and clenched her fists. It was no more than two months ago that she had no one to rely on. Yet, now, there were people who were by her side and willing to give her a helping hand.

A shoulder she could cry on and a shoulder she could lean on. And... hands that are willing to lead her through the dark when her eyes are covered.

She never thought she would get to experience this. It was warm.

Preparations upon preparations. All news outlets were buzzing with the marriage between Ross and Stewart.

Everyone was anticipating such a grand event. It could be considered as the event of the century.

Lucy had her head held high since she was the main protagonist and the reason why every girl was gushing with envy and jealousy.

Not only was Maximus Stewart rich and capable, he was also very handsome and had a face of a lady killer. A single smile from him could move mountains but it was too bad he rarely smiled.

"It’s about to start, mom." Lucy said to her mother as she stared at herself in the big body size mirror.

"Yes, dear. It’s your happily ever after. No one aside from you deserves this position." Victoria flattered her daughter. "My daughter looks so beautiful that even I am envious."

"Stop it mother. We both know where I get my beauty from." She said and giggled. "It’s thanks to you I have such beautiful hair." The compliment stoped there.

Most girls would say they had such beautiful hair, eye and skin thanks to their mother but Lucy felt it was because of her mother that she could not inherit the red eyes that flowed in the Ross lineage.

Her father, who was an Illegitimate child, had his genes diluted but he did not inherit the red eyes of Ross.

But it was said that his offspring would have red eyes if his genes managed to dominate that if his wifes, but unfortunately, it didn’t.

And because of that, Lucy could not possess those beautiful red eyes she was ever so envious about. She despised Valerie for being the only one to have such rare and sparkly eyes and secretly detested her mother but she did not voice it.

She kept it to herself and still palmed the living and filial daughter.

"Come on, don’t be modest." Victoria said, unbeknownst to her daughters thoughts. "You may take a lot from me but I don’t even look as good as you when I was your age. You’re blessed, my daughter." She cuddled her carefully, not wanting to ruin the make up that took hours to perfect.

’If you say so. I can only thank Ross genes for making me as beautiful and flawless as I am right now.’ she thought, snickering to herself.

"It’s about time we headed for the venue." Victoria said. "Let’s go or we’ll be late."

They were having the wedding ceremony as well as the reception in the biggest and grandest hall in the country. It was so luxurious that it gave girls another reason to be envious of Lucy.

Not only was she a Heiress of a rich family, she was also getting married into the strongest and richest family. She was born with so much luck, beauty and fortune.

Those words were going everywhere, unknown to them that the luck of this little missy would run out that very same day.

Waiting in the setup altar, Lucy stared at the guests anxiously.

She had walked up the aisle and had been standing there for almost an hour. The people from Stewart were present. The head of the family, that old man. His father was there too. And that young lady who looked like Max’s younger sister, paying attention to her phone.

Other people from Stewart whom she did not recognize and could not be bothered to, were all there, including his assistant and secretary, so where was Max? Where was her groom?

Her father was already getting angry and impatient, tapping his feet on the ground, but he did not say anything and only frowned in disdain.

Her mother was anxious as well, biting on her thumb and wondering what was going on.

The old man from the Stewart family did not seem bothered and simply stared, waiting for what was to come?

"What’s going on?" Lucy muttered, squeezing the bouquet in her hand. "Why isn’t he here yet? Did something happen? Did...?"

"Where’s the groom?" People started whispering. It was past the auspicious time, the bride has been waiting at the altar and the groom was still nowhere to be seen.

His family was present but he wasn’t there.

"Do you think something happened to him?" They wondered.

"Look, his family isn’t worried. Do you think this is all planned out?"

"Maybe he’s preparing a surprise for her."

More whispering and even people watching the live stream gave their own thoughts on the matter, both concerned and disappointed.

But what was more seen was the concern people felt for the anxious bride.

"Is this how Stewart wants to act?" Bernard asked. He wanted to humor them since they were the leading family but he couldn’t take such insults anymore, especially not on this big day with the whole world watching.

"And what do you mean by that?" Max’s father, Richard, asked, looking nonchalant at the angry Bernard.

"What do you mean? Do you not see?" Bernard clenched his fists. "My daughter has been standing there in her wedding gown for almost an hour and there seems to be no sign of your son."

"And how is that our problem?" Richard asked.

"What?"

"Maximus has his reasons for whatever he does. He might also have his reasons for being late." He calmly stated which got on Bernard’s nerves.

"Reasons? He has his reasons for leaving my daughter standing at the altar for an hour?"

"Calm down." Richard said. "If she’s tired, she should take a seat for a while." He picked up a glass of wine and sipped on it. "It’s not completely an hour yet. Let’s wait a little bit. Once it strikes an hour, we’ll contact him."

Bernard was boiling but he decided to go along with his words.

"That brat better have a reasonable excuse to give for this sort of behavior." He growled.

Richard had never been invested in what his children were doing. He was a calm man too, minding his own business. He had a completely opposite character, compared to his former wife, Tiana.

He trusted that his son would be responsible for his own actions even if he did end up messing up such an important event.

They grew distant after his wife’s death but the line was completely drawn when he went ahead to remarry.

All hopes of mending their relationship wre lost after that so he did not stick his nose into his son’s business and only wished him well from afar.

Everyone waited for a few more minutes while Lucy sat down as Richard suggested. The excitement slowly started fading and people had started calling Max a jerk for doing such a thing to Lucy.

While others were concerned that something had actually happened to him.

As soon as the waiting clocked an hour, the doors opened and Max walked in with his hands in his pocket and a proud grin plastered on his face.

"Sorry, I’m late."
