Chapter 253: Chapter 253: Maxim Sinclair Worries Summer Lowell Is Overthinking

The conversation inside came to an abrupt halt, and Assistant Collins turned back to look at Summer Lowell with a face full of surprise.

Having been an assistant for several years, it was the first time he encountered someone daring to barge into this study without knocking.

Maxim Sinclair seemed unfazed: "What’s wrong? Did you leave something here?"

Summer was a bit annoyed too, wishing she had knocked first, then she would have known someone was inside, and she wouldn’t have come in.

Assistant Collins stood up: "Ma’am."

Summer shook her head. She had gotten used to the title and no longer resisted it as she used to: "You guys continue chatting, I’m just here to grab something."

She walked over to the section deliberately set up to the east, pulled out a book she was halfway through, and left the study without looking back.

After the door was closed, a long time passed before Maxim Sinclair asked Assistant Collins: "Do you think she heard what we were talking about just now?"

Assistant Collins felt a bit uneasy: "I’m not sure, I think my voice was a bit loud, couldn’t control the volume, she probably heard it."

Maxim stroked his chin: "If she heard it, she heard it. If she’s interested, I can tell her in detail."

"Your relationship with Ma’am has just improved. It’s not suitable for her to know about these things. It might give her a misunderstanding about your image."

Assistant Collins sincerely suggested, after all, what they were discussing was how to deal with the somewhat unruly Sinclair Family illegitimate child lately.

"No need, she knows what kind of person I am. Don’t forget, when she was by my side before, she also dealt with similar matters."

Maxim said this, but his eyes uncontrollably glanced out the window.

The content and tone of what he just said were quite sinister. How would Summer feel hearing it?

Would she think he was especially cruel?

Just like Justin Huxley had told her.

After Assistant Collins finished with work, he left Varden Villa. Maxim stood behind the floor-to-ceiling window on the upper floor, hands behind his back, watching Summer in the garden below teasing the cat again.

After watching for a while, Maxim decided to go down and talk to Summer.

When he reached the garden, Summer had just released the cat.

Maxim stood aside watching: "If you like this cat so much, I’ll have the butler talk to the neighbor to get you one. I think the neighbor has quite a few kittens."

"No need, this is fine. I prefer free-riding, without responsibility."

Summer’s words were ambiguous, leaving unclear if she was talking about people or cats.

Maxim chuckled with meaning, walked up behind her: "What book are you reading?"

"A novel," Summer handed the book to him, "If you’re curious, take it to check, there won’t be anything hidden inside."

"I didn’t doubt you," Maxim really took the book, and opened it, meticulously checking it over, "But usually in movies, the more they do this, the more it signifies there’s a problem with the book. I’ve been curious about this scene for a long time and took this opportunity to do something different."

Summer thought he was very idle, giving a perfunctory smile and then took the book back, placing it casually on the nearby chair.

Maxim walked around the long bench and sat beside her: "You seem to really like this garden? Every time I’m home, I see you lingering here for a long while."

"Haven’t you noticed, it’s only when you’re home that I linger in this garden?"

"I’ve noticed," Maxim smiled helplessly, "why bring it up? It makes things awkward instantly."

"It’s nothing, just want to remind you." Summer spread her hands nonchalantly, "In case you give yourself a narrative."

This left Maxim unable to respond, and the two fell into silence.

For reasons unknown, Summer focused her gaze on the distant sky.

After a while, Maxim suddenly broke the silence: "Did you hear something outside the study door earlier?"

"Heard one or two sentences, all things I’ve heard before, not surprising." Summer picked up the book beside her and continued reading.

Maxim intensely stared at Summer for a long time before he averted his gaze: "You’ve not flipped the page in a while, what are you thinking about?"

With his reminder, Summer realized she was just staring blankly at the page, with the content not entering her mind at all.

"I was thinking," Summer suddenly turned, staring at him, "when I can leave this place, or say, be far away from you, either is fine."

"That’s truly a shame," Maxim patted the long bench beneath him, "later on, this garden should have two rocking chairs, and when we’re old, we’ll each have one, basking in the sun and rocking."

"Let’s not talk about the future, let’s talk about the present." Summer turned her pages, speaking lightly.

"Ha." Maxim gave her a deep look, saying nothing more.

...

Vivian Sullivan once again took advantage of her holiday to call Summer Lowell out.

The first thing Summer said when she saw her was: "It’s just you today, right? Not like last time, with Justin Huxley?"

"Don’t worry, it’s just the two of us today, I didn’t call him," Vivian linked arms with her, walking inside, "but what’s up between you two? He can’t get a date with you and has to ask me for help, and seeing you now, it’s obvious you don’t want to see him."

"Yes, just don’t want to see him." Summer did not elaborate on the reasons, only repeatedly urging Vivian not to play matchmaker anymore.

Vivian saw she was unwilling to discuss it and refrained from probing further: "Alright then, I’ll be mindful of that in the future."

Halfway through the meal, Vivian still felt uneasy: "What’s going on with you now anyway? Justin Huxley seems quite worried about you. Are you keeping your distance to not drag him in, or is there another reason?"

"A bit of both, the Huxley Family and Maxim Sinclair are currently fighting openly and in secret, I don’t want to get involved as the battleground," Summer thought of Justin’s righteous-sounding words and then thought of Maxim deliberately leaking Huxley business dealings in front of her, feeling overwhelmed, "they’re all using me, I don’t want to get involved in any of it, get it?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"I don’t understand what you’re saying, but I know you’re very troubled now," Vivian took her hand, "rest assured, I’ll always be on your side, no matter what. If Justin asks for help again, I won’t entertain it."

Summer propped her head with her hand: "Vivian, Justin wants me to work with him, to collaborate internally and externally, he’d hold off Maxim outside, creating a chance for me to escape."

"Then I think, if you’re willing, why not take advantage of their conflict, and during all the chaos, escape to a place with neither of them, staying far away from these two, wouldn’t that be quieter?"

Vivian said, thinking of something.
