Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 169: Can This Marriage Still Be Divorced?
Late at night.
The atmosphere in the hospital was heavy.
Vanessa Grant wiped her tears away, stood up, and walked over to sit beside Natalie.
"Nat, I really have to thank you for what you did today, risking yourself. If not for you, Isaac wouldn’t have made it out safely."
As she spoke, she held Natalie’s hand, and her tone shifted from gratitude to guilt: "That bastard Jason, I never thought he’d go this far! Isaac had told us to send him to rehab, maybe Ansel was just too soft-hearted for a moment..."
At the mention of Jason, Natalie’s expression darkened.
"For what he did to you, I apologize on behalf of the Grant family. Nat, don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get an explanation."
Just then, the light above the operating room turned off.
Natalie and Vanessa both shot to their feet.
"Doctor! How is my son?"
"The patient’s injuries have all been treated."
While the doctor explained the situation to Vanessa, a nurse pushed Isaac out.
He was still unconscious, hadn’t woken up yet, and his face was visibly gaunt.
Natalie instinctively moved forward, but Vanessa was even faster, rushing to grip the bed rail, eyes full of pain: "Baby..."
So Natalie stopped in her tracks.
VIP patient room.
Ansel Vaughn arrived after dealing with Jason, and Vanessa collapsed in her husband’s arms, crying, "I just feel so bad for our baby, he’s been through so much..."
Ansel gently patted her, comforting: "Thank goodness Isaac’s okay."
"If not for Nat."
Vanessa sniffled, dragged her husband to Natalie, "We have to give Nat a proper thank you."
"Certainly," Ansel looked at Natalie, "It’s almost morning. I’ll have someone take you home."
"Yes, Nat, go get some rest. You’ve been through a lot yourself. Rest up." Vanessa linked her arm with Natalie’s, "When Isaac wakes up, I’ll let you know."
Natalie’s lips parted, as if she wanted to say something but didn’t, and just nodded: "Okay, I’ll head back then."
She left, but Ansel kept staring at the patient room door, lost in thought.
Vanessa asked in confusion, "What are you thinking?"
Ansel snapped out of it, said it was nothing.
But in reality, he was thinking: looking at Isaac and Natalie, could this marriage even end?
——
The Vaughn Residence had an entire floor of the hospital sealed off for Isaac, allowing no one near.
Isaac slept for a full three days without any hint of waking up.
Vanessa was beside herself with worry, but the doctors said his body was fine. The reason he hadn’t woken might be from earlier mental strain and exhaustion—just catching up on sleep.
But Vanessa still couldn’t relax, asking the doctors seven or eight times a day.
On the afternoon of the fourth day, Isaac finally woke up.
Natalie got Vanessa’s call while she still had a meeting to attend.
But after thinking it over, she told her assistant to let Julian Beckett know and take the meeting for her, then drove straight to the hospital.
Just after getting out of the car, before Natalie could even enter the hospital, someone stopped her.
When she saw who it was, Natalie’s expression turned cold and sharp: "Move."
"Please! Miss Kendall, I’m begging you!"
With a "thud," Sarah Sutton dropped to her knees in front of Natalie, her eyes red as she pleaded: "They won’t let me go upstairs, I can’t see Young Master Vaughn."
Sarah grabbed onto Natalie’s pant leg, "Miss Kendall, I’m begging you, please take me to see Young Master Vaughn? He promised—he promised me I could stay with him."
Natalie’s fists clenched at her sides, looking down at Sarah, "So the last time I talked to you, you didn’t listen to a single word, did you?"
At that, Sarah’s gaze flickered.
Natalie had told her to stay away from Isaac.
But she couldn’t.
She just couldn’t.
She had to cling to Isaac— tightly.
"I..."
"Little Ear."
Suddenly, a hoarse male voice rang out.
Natalie looked up in surprise, and met a pair of gentle, calm eyes: "I knew you’d come, so I came down to get you."
