Chapter 237: For Someone So Put Together

Brooke stirred in bed, carelessly stretching her leg, soft moans erupting from her lips as her body shifted to the side, cozying up to Thane’s embrace.

A gentle kiss on her forehead and a tight squeeze drew her out of her half awaken state.

His voice, low and rumbling sounded in her ear, "Good morning, gorgeous."

Brooke raised her gaze to his gentle stare, "What time is it?" she yawned.

"It’s okay, you didn’t oversleep." he assured her, but Brooke could not help worrying, she sat up pulling the sheets to her chest.

Pushing her hair back, she blinked herself out of her daze, taking in the sight of hers and Thane’s clothes scattered across the bedroom floor.

For someone so put together he never ceased to surprise her with how rough he was underneath his clothes.

"Did you have a shoot today? Last time I checked today was a free day." Thane said getting into a sit-up next to his wife.

"You memorized my schedule?" she asked, surprised.

With everything going on with him she did not expect him to put so much effort into doing something a calendar could do.

His tone natural, thane responded "Why would I not?"

Brooke’s cheeks flushed, it would’ve been odd had her overly meticulous husband not done something like this. Answering his question she explained, "I was actually meeting with Dylan later to rehearse some lines."

The disapproval on Thane’s face was overly obvious, that it made Brooke anxious. Clinging to his arm, she inquired, "Did I say something wrong?"

"No, I just...it’s nothing." He said.

"Are you sure? If you want me to stay home-"

He tilted his head to her side, and rested his hand over hers, "No, no, it’s fine. You should go, you’ve been distracted with everything going on here, it’d be a waste not to go."

Her countenance fell, "Speaking of everything happening, what did you do about Gilbert?" she asked, finally voicing out her thoughts.

Plainly, he told her "I’ve contacted my sources to have his family taken off the Grayson’s support list. All ties and connections they have are now terminated."

Brooke sighed, "I still can’t believe he was harming you all this time, and I trusted him so much. It’s a good thing that nothing bad happened." She hugged his arm tighter, and rested her head on his shoulder.

Thane gave her head a gentle pat, "Don’t worry, I’ll never let anyone get another chance to harm us ever again."

Mallory widened her eyes at the gem sitting in the middle of the velvet box, "H-How did you find this?" she tried to reach for it, but Sloane pulled it away, a second before she could.

"I’m sorry, but I’ll need you to answer some questions of mine first, then we can talk giving this back to you." She bargained, earning a frown from Mallory.

"What question could you have for me?" it wasn’t that she wasn’t willing to listen, after all that pendant meant the world to her. But when it came down to it, there was nothing she could know that would be of any importance to a Grayson.

Sloane led her to a balcony, where it was just the two of them, she assigned a maid to keep watch outside and alert them if anyone was passing by.

The coast clear, she asked, "Your aunt, where is she?"

"My aunt?" she echoed, at first trying to connect the dots. "Oh, did you want to buy a bag? I’m sorry, but she isn’t taking requests right now..."

"I’m not here to ask you about a bag."

Sloane shrugged, she flashed the pendant once more in front of her. "This is the most important jewel owned by your family, I want to ask your aunt some questions about it." She explained.

But her words only seemed to confuse Mallory even more, "Important jewel? No, I think you’re mistaken. That pendant was given to me by my aunt, it has nothing to do with my family."

Sloane frowned, "Your aunt gave this to you?" In a low mumble she said, "That explains it."

Sloane had been worked up trying to understand why Amanda or Godfrey would willingly give their family heirloom to Mallory, but now that mystery made sense.

At least, half sense.

"I don’t know what she told you, but this pendant is very rare, and very expensive. Your aunt must’ve told you to take care of it, right?" she guessed.

"That’s just because she made it herself-"

Sloane sighed, "Speaking of your aunt, is it true that your mother had her sent out of your villa? I hear from my friend that she used to live with you, until she crossed Amanda the wrong way."

Once again, Mallory was confused, "My aunt left on her own, mother is always trying to get in contact with her, but she’s been so busy with work-" once more Sloane cut her off.

"Speaking of Amanda, does she know?" she traced her gaze to the pendant, "About this? Or did your aunt tell you to hide it from her?"

Mallory folded her arms and looked at her squarely, "I’m really grateful that you found my pendant, but whatever story you think you know, you don’t know. My mother has seen me wearing the pendant before, and she’s never raised a brow about it. Why? Because it’s just a trinket, so, if you’re done with the questioning, could I please get my pendant back?"

Sloane parted her lips in response, but the maid hurried to the balcony, "Mr Edward is on his way here!"

Sloane let out a hiss, "Here," she reached for her hand and placed the pendant in it. "You can leave, but we’re far from finished with our discussion." She said, dismissing her.

Mallory held her pendant to her chest and hurried away. On her way out, she watched Edward go into the balcony, and watched the maid resume her post outside, scanning the area passersby.

Her mind briefly flashed to the conversation...no, the exchange they shared at the dining hall. She twisted her lips and knitted her brows tightly.

"What could those two have to talk about in private?" she voiced her thoughts aloud.
