Chapter 42: Flain vs Mutated Lucas

The monster just stood there. Flain charged at it, gripping his swords tightly and activating Swift Slash, causing his blade to shimmer.

Flain’s blades slashed across its shoulders, sides, chest, and thighs. Every strike was precise, every cut unleashed a stream of black blood. Even after Swift Slash ended, Flain continued his relentless assault.

But the monster fought back—it leaped into the air and bit at Flain’s arm. Flain blocked with his sword, knowing he couldn’t dodge in time due to the disorienting movement. However, the monster grabbed both him and his sword, then slammed him into the ground like an ant.

[-175 HP]

Flain instantly rolled away from the monster. His armor was in terrible shape after so many battles, and his cloak had just torn apart, exposing his face and losing the bonuses it provided. Monster was approaching, his eyes filled with raw hatred.

Flain fired four Fire Balls at him. Monster’ body was engulfed in the explosion. His skin burned—but it was already healing.

Flain charged forward again, knowing it was time to use his trump card.

He stretched his arms to the sides.

"Tornado of Spines," Flain murmured.

His body began to spin wildly as long, deadly spikes erupted from his bones. Flain transformed into a swirling colossus of death, hurtling straight toward monster.

Flain collided with him—monster’ body was being torn apart, but he managed to jump back. It was useless. Flain, still in his tornado form, was already upon him again, shredding his body.

Then, Tornado of Spines ended. Monster looked badly injured—though his regeneration was working, his condition was still critical.

Monster opened his mouth, and an enormous Fire Ball began to form in front of him. The monster could absorb spells that hit it and release them against its original caster in its own version.

Flain tried to escape, but it was too late. The monster unleashed the Fire Ball, and it was so massive that dodging was impossible.

[-230 HP]

Flain lay on the ground, completely blackened. It was a miracle he had survived at all—he had only 5 HP left. The monster approached him, looking heavily damaged as well, though nowhere near as much as Flain. His entire armor had melted, and he felt like his body could collapse at any moment.

Flain rushed forward and resumed his barrage of attacks, but this time, he noticed something—the monster was moving much slower. Maybe a side effect of the Fire Ball, exhaustion, or the state of its body.

As an undead, Flain had the advantage that no matter how injured he was, it didn’t reduce his strength or speed—something he greatly appreciated.

After a while, Flain managed to pull off something that could decide the battle. He latched onto the monster’s back and drove his swords into its neck. His old sword from the bandits snapped, leaving him only with the black sword from Zehren.

Flain pressed down with all his strength. The monster trembled and coughed up blood until, finally, it collapsed onto the ground. Flain didn’t receive EXP—meaning it wasn’t dead yet.

Flain, just to be sure, attempted to use Lord of Souls since he had a free slot, and this monster would be a valuable slave.

[The organism whose soul you want to enslave does not genuinely wish to be enslaved.]

Flain decided not to try torturing it—it was too dangerous. The monster could regenerate and kill him. Besides, Flain doubted that the monster even felt pain, and even if it did, he wasn’t sure it would understand why it was being tortured or what was expected of it.

So, Flain drove his sword into its head, putting an end to the monster for good.

[+8500 EXP]

[You have completed the quest: Defeating Your First Dungeon Boss.]

[+Efficient EXP Collector]

[Efficient EXP Collector: When an undead under your command kills someone, you receive 80% of the EXP you would have gained if you had killed them yourself. When your slave kills someone, you receive 95% of the EXP you would have gained if you had killed them yourself.]

When Flain read this, he was overjoyed. This was good—no, it was amazing. Now, he could let Aran and his undead army slaughter weaker beings for him. While he would receive slightly less EXP than if he had done it himself, it was still an ability he was more than happy to use.

Then, Flain noticed something—the monster’s corpse had disintegrated into dust, leaving something behind on the ground.

He walked over and picked it up. It was a silver necklace with a blood-red gemstone at the bottom. Flain put it on.

[Your armor has latched onto you.]

[You have equipped the Necklace of Deception: This artifact allows the wearer to create an illusion that alters one aspect of their appearance. All beings within a 3-kilometer radius will perceive this illusion. The user can change only one thing, such as making their nose smaller or altering the speed of their sword swings. The necklace doesn’t change things to reality, if the owner wishes to be faster so the surroundings will perceive him faster but in reality he is not.]

At first, Flain didn’t think much of it. Sure, it could confuse and deceive his opponents, but not in any particularly overwhelming way since it only allowed for one change.

But then, his eyes gleamed as an idea struck him—something that could be incredibly useful and remove a major disadvantage. Flain willed his footsteps to sound normal, like those of someone walking in armor.

He didn’t perceive any change—he still heard the loud, metallic sound of his steps. But then, he approached Itai.

"Itai, did you notice anything?" Flain asked.

"Yeah, when you walk, you don’t make that loud noise anymore. Honestly, it was getting annoying, and my ears were starting to hurt from it. I’m glad you found a way to get rid of it," Itai muttered.

’So it works. The 3-kilometer limit isn’t a big issue,’ Flain thought.

Meanwhile, Itai had already summoned all the soldiers, significantly strengthening his army. Each soldier was about as strong as the Green Commanders, and the generals were on par with the Black Commanders. Now, he could truly be called a necromancer...
