Chapter 107: Fall Back!

Soldiers all around Ark pulled out their military issued short swords, weapons capable of penetrating the skin of even profane beasts. And yet, it would not save them.

The sword might have been sharp enough, but the soldiers lacked the strength to push the blade deep into their bodies.

A furry ball of darkness jumped on a soldier that had been meaning the torrent, pinning the man to the ground.

He struggled under its grip, hacking and slashing at the beast but the beast batted his hand away and unleashed a wave of white silky substance from its abdomen, sealing the man in place—

Just before it plunged its mandibles into his stomach, bringing with it a wave of blood as viscera.

Soldiers were falling left and right, some pushed off the wall, while others wrapped up in webs and made to dangle over the edge.

"Retreats to the second line!" Damian screamed at the top of his voice. He lifted a pure white blade and divided one of the spiders from top to bottom before lunging at the next beast.

Ark was darting from spider to spider like a storm, taking life after life. His dagger was slick with green blood face scrunched up in a snarl as he tore into the beasts.

One of the spiders rose its head from the edge of the wall but immediately lost it as his dagger cut cleanly through.

In front of Ark, a man was waving his sword around, trying to keep a beast away but his hand was suddenly wrapped up in a web and the spider pulled him violently towards itself, it maw wide open to receive him.

Ark appeared at its back and dug his dagger into its abdomen, dragging the weapon from end to end and exposing its disgusting innards.

Letting out a dying squeal the beast collapsed to the floor, lifeless.

The man staggered, shocked at the sight when Ark grabbed onto his shoulder and pushed him forward.

"Retreat!"

The man quickly ran to the edge of the wall and quickly began to descend down the steps.

Not too far away from Ark, Emma was using her arrows to ward off the beast, she had a cut at the side of ther face but other than that she looked completely fine.

Just as a spider lunged at her, she dug her arrow into its multiple red eyes and twisted the weapon.

The spider convulsed in her hold before its legs relaxed and then she ripped the arrow out, letting out a steamy breath.

Ark did not know how accurately she was able to sense beasts up close and to what detail, but from the looks of it she was struggling.

But they could not retreat, they had to get all the soldiers out of there first and then move on themselves.

War ranged on atop the battlement, the curse bearers doing their best to evacuate the soldiers atop the walls.

Some died in the process of evacuating, some were injured but there were those who barely managed to escape.

A spider hissed as it tossed its web right at Ark, but reacting quickly, he twisted his body and the web shot past him latching onto the floor.

But the spider did not stop there.

Instead, it recalled its webs, using the momentum to dash right at him with its spiked feet leading the way.

Paying attention to its flight pattern, Ark easily dodged underneath it, and then he slashed at its back, ripping into its flesh.

Ark was breathing heavily and his heart rate accelerated due fast he was moving. Every second, the life of a soldier was at risk and so he had to consistently move from place to place.

Thankfully, most of the soldiers had now evacuated leaving only a few of them and the curse bearers.

That was when Ark heard a muffled curse. He turned around to see Emma surrounded by five spiders.

The hand that held her arrow was bleeding and suspended in the air by a particularly thick web.

Her second hand was also held down as well by another web and by her feet was a spider lying motionless, its head a mush of green blood.

Just as one of the spiders was about to lunge at her, Ark threw his dagger into the air. The dagger curved in the air as it flew towards her, cutting right through the web holding her hand.

The spider pounced, aiming to dig its maw into Emma’s neck, but just as the web fell loose, a wicked smile curled on her lips.

Emma swung what remained of the web at the spider— the sticky substance latched onto its body, then she pulled it right towards her and burrowed her arrow into its skull.

Her titanic bow manifested a second later and then using it like a golf club, she slammed it against the other two spiders.

Their bodies compressed, the weapon digging into their sides as they were blasted off the battlement.

By the time Ark glanced around once more the battlement was empty, Damian was already halfway down the ladder screaming at them to get down.

Ark immediately ran up to Emma.

"Thanks, I was in quite the sticky situation back there— woah!"

He lifted her in a princess carry as another wave began to charge up the edge of the wall.

"What are you—"

Emma let out a light squeak as a feeling of weightlessness overtook them. Ark had lifted her and jumped right off the top of the wall.

Once he landed, his feet dug deep into the soil, creating an audible boom from the impact.

Soft vibrations moved up his toes right up to his spine, causing Ark to wince and slow down for a second to let the pain recede.

Ark then lifted his hand in the air, there was a slight whistle as infernal claw made its way to him, landing smoothly in his hand—

And then he ran.

"D-did you jump?!" Emma’s voice came with a tingle of excitement.

"Yes I did, never again though! My spine feels like jelly."

Emma laughed, wet hair billowing in the wind as Ark ran forward.

"Isn’t this fun?!"

Ark stared at her, she had a wide grin on her face as she clung to his neck with both arms.

"What about this is fun to you?"

"Everything!"

Ark sighed and stared ahead.

Right in front of him was the second line of defense, multiple military vehicles created a makeshift wall, with their torrents pointing right at the walls.

Damian was just a few feet away from them, running as though his life depended on it, which it did.... Because behind them, a swarm of spiders was flooding down the wall and charging right behind them.

Just as they finally crossed the line, the soldiers unloaded on the beasts.

Their numbers had greatly reduced after the electric shock incident and yet the barrage lasted for what felt like hours, tense moments filled with only the sound of booming guns and violent rain.

After what seemed to be an eternity, which was actually just about ten minutes, there was finally a calm.

Every single spider in sight was either dead or on the doorway of death. Some soldiers fell to their knees out of exhaustion, some screamed at the top of their voices, while a few cried.

They had finally survived their first defence, albeit a violent one.

One by one the military vehicles began to pull out of the area.

Damian finally lit his cigarette, drawing in a breath of toxic smoke just before the rain quenched its fire.

The white cloud of smoke, all that remained from his efforts drifted into the air as they stared at the carnage before them.

Ark placed his dagger back in its sheath and let out a breath.

Then a voice came from below him.

"You can let go of me now you know?" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

It was then Ark remembered that he was still carrying Emma in his arms.

Just as he placed her feet on the ground, a loud screeching sound spread through the area.

Everyone present turned to stare at the wall, their breaths caught their throat.

And then they saw it—

A large head with multiple red eyes peeked from above the wall, all its sinister orbs turned at once, fixing themselves on the humans below.

And then just beside the first, another head rose above the wall, this one even larger than the first.
