Chapter 106: Terrible Misfortune

Multiple torrents roared, pouring down a storm of lead upon the approaching spiders. Due to their height advantage, the bullets inclined downwards, increasing the speed and force of the bullets.

The soldiers standing atop the walls were also actively emptying their shells upon the horde of beasts, hoping to thin them out.

Spiders were dying left and right, their bodies completely eviscerated by their unrelenting onslaught.

Ark watched them with a bored expression, he was not with his gun today so all he could do was stare as the soldier had their fun.

He glanced at Emma who was beside him, just as a gale of wind sent his hair spiraling out of control, Emma had let loose a rather destructive shot.

The arrow, seemingly clouded by wind, jerked forward, and collided amidst the spiders, creating a small whirlwind of decimation.

For a moment Ark envied Emma’s power, to be able to do so much damage without having to come an inch close to the enemy...

It was an amazing power, and yet it was flawed. The Archer Class had one glaring disadvantage, the same disadvantage that Archers always had throughout history.

When it came to close combat battles, especially with someone of the knight class, things start to go wrong for them.

They did not have the superior strength knights had and were often too engrossed in improving their archery to focus on melee combat.

That was why Thalia was hard on all of them, during her training she had ensured they all did various forms of practice, regardless of their class.

Ark redirected his gaze to the horde of spiders.

"They seem to be getting closer..."

Damian’s rifle roared, unleashing a rather powerful shot. The man frowned and then glanced at Ark, before turning his attention back to the horde.

"They won’t get closer than that, we have them where we want them."

Ark nodded and continued watching the spiders. Whenever a spider was killed, another one would simply climb over its body, running forward with so much vigor that Ark wondered if they were completely mindless.

As minutes passed, the spiders were getting closer and closer and closer.

Damian hissed.

"Don’t worry, they won’t get to the wall."

Shortly after, they got to the wall...

The sound of multiple legs screeching against the walls filled their ears, causing the soldiers to visibly recoil while shooting with more vigor than before.

One of the soldiers stopped firing to reload, then screamed at Damian, in order to be heard over the rain and the sound of the bullets.

"Sir! They’ve made it to the wall!"

Damian cursed and released another shot.

"They won’t get halfway—"

A particularly ambitious spider, charged forward, dodging a burst of bullets as it climbed higher and higher, until it got dangerously close.

Suddenly, its body exploded, greenish liquid splattering all over the wall as its corpse was sent back down the way it came.

Damian looked at Ark, his expression tense.

"Well shit."

Damian then pulled out his communicator from his belt.

"Activate the electric blockade right now!"

Beasts capable of scaling fences were not rare, so it would have been foolish to think walls alone would have been enough to atop them.

That was why there was a contingency plan. Close to the upper portions of the wall were spiked barricades they pointed outwards.

They were to make it more difficult for the beast to scale the walls, and as Ark was just finding out...

Tzzzzzz

Blue electricity tore out of the metallic barrier, climbing along the sharp rods that surrounded the entirety of the wall.

The entire fence was suddenly washed with blue light as the electric blockade buzzed with life, creating a more efficient obstruction between them and the beasts.

All the soldiers watched, their hearts beating loudly in their ears as the spiders approached the barricade, it was their last defence against them, if it failed...

Then they would be sitting ducks.

Not caring about the strange light or the constant buzzing sound that promised destruction, the first group of spiders approached the barricade and finally made contact with the blockade.

Just as the first spider’s spiky limb touched the metallic spike, it suddenly convulsed, its body shaking violently as the electricity spread around its entire being.

The rain only served to make the effects even more intense, soon the smell of burning flesh filled their nostrils and the spider was violently flung off the wall, its body stiff as it fell into the horde.

But the devastation did not stop there, the other spiders had already collided with the wall...

The floor shuddered underneath their feet as the air was filled with a violent buzz.

Moving through the wet walls, the electricity went down in a chain reaction, moving from body to body and completely electrifying the entire wall.

Uncountable black masses were shaking violently as though dancing to a deranged beat and anyone that hurriedly climbed on top of its neighbour was not spared of the carnage.

The tense soldiers took a breath of relief, noticing their movements were temporarily stalled and the torrents tore into those still at the foot of the wall.

Putrid blood began to mix with the water as spider after spider was destroyed underneath the onslaught.

One of the soldiers let out a victorious roar.

"They’ll never get past that!"

Suddenly, there was a deafening silence, the rain suddenly felt so cold that it chilled them down to the bone.

The electric fence— it had fizzled off.

The spiders closest to the walls that had felt the raw intensity of the currents fell down lifeless, but those of them that had managed to survive began to climb up even faster than before.

Ark frowned and shook his head slightly.

"Did this idiot just jinx us?"

Golden light suddenly surrounded him as his leather armour wrapped itself around his slender frame.

His blood-red dagger appeared in a sheath on his waist and he slipped it out staring at the spiders with a tense expression.

Then he rose to his feet and screamed at the top of his voice.

"Get ready for melee combat!"

An eruption of sparks brightened up the battlement as the military curse bearers with them summoned their weapons and armour, ready to face the horde.

The new wave of spiders poured over the wall like a tide of devastating darkness.
