Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 110: Sabotage
Ark dismissed his armour, preferring to soak underneath the rain with more breathable clothes.
Emma held onto his shirt for ’guidance’ as they walked over to where Damian was.
Although they had cleared the horde, there were considerable casualties. Worse of all, the beasts had completely devoured some of the bodies, leaving behind unoccupied military uniforms and blood, a ghastly sight.
Damian was organising a group of soldiers, each one of them properly armed. Not too far away from them was the body of the second massive spider, looking just as terrible as when it was alive.
His wife, Lauretta was standing right next to him and save for the rain she was looking largely untouched by the battle.
When they got close to Damian, he turned to face them with a light smile on his face.
"You two are quite the duo, it took seven of us to take out this one here," He said, motioning at the spider.
One of the soldiers scowled.
"That is because you took so long to shoot Capt!"
Damian shrugged, "Perfection takes time. Anyways, we aren’t done yet."
"The control room right?" Ark asked.
The electric fence could not have simply malfunctioned during the siege, someone had put it off on purpose.
Damian’s face darkened slightly as he turned in a certain direction, right there, at the edge of the wall was the control room.
When they arrived at the control room Damian didn’t bother to knock.
The captain took a step back and then kicked the door forcefully... but the door did not cave, instead, his leg vibrated softly and he gritted his teeth.
The sound of the light thump was overshadowed by the rain and yet everyone heard it. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
For a moment there was silence, right before Ark failed to restrain his laughter.
"It’s a reinforced door!" He said between laughs, even Emma chucked slightly before holding it in.
Of course the door placed so close to the wall would be made strong enough to withstand apocalypse beasts.
The door creaked open seconds later and the man inside saluted at the sight of Damian.
"Captain! What brings you here?"
Damian did not answer, they all simply stepped into the room and took a good look around.
There was nothing out of order, everything seemed fine and so Damian walked over to the control unit.
"What button activates the electric fence?"
Although there were about four people in the room, Damian was speaking to the man who they met first.
The man walked up to the panel and pointed a blue button at the edge of the console.
"This button right here does the trick. But if I may ask capt, why do you want to know?"
Once again Damian ignored his question and walked over to it.
"Pull up a visual of the fence." This time he was talking to one of them who was seated.
Soon the live image of the fence was displayed on the screen. Once Damian clicked the button the fence buzzed to life, the blue currents suddenly engulfing what was left of the barricade.
The weight of the situation bore down on all those present, at least those that had come with Damian.
All the soldiers with them were staring daggers at the men, if not for Damian’s presence then they would have probably torn them apart by now.
Their singular action had led to the loss of far too many people, their colleagues as well as friends.
On the other hand, the technicians seemed rather confused by the sudden hostility.
’Something is wrong...’ Ark thought as he watched their reactions, it wasn’t long before his suspicion was confirmed.
Damian turned off the currents and faced the technicians, his voice taking on a cold tone.
"During the battle, why did you turn it off?"
The man ran his hand through his hair, cold sweat dripping down his face.
"Sir? We didn’t turn it off."
One of the soldiers grabbed onto his shirt and violently pulled him forward.
"The fuck do you mean you didn’t turn it off?"
Before he could land a blow on the man, Damian held his arm and gave him a look causing the man to let go, grinding his teeth in anger.
The technician, now panicked, spoke a bit more hurriedly.
"We never turned it off because it was never on in the first place! We never got orders to activate the barricade!"
One of the other technicians got up to support the first.
"Why would we have to activate the barricade? No monster has managed to climb the fence since!"
The violent soldier scoffed but Damian stopped him from doing anything foolish.
Ark felt someone tug on his shirt and turned to see Emma motioning at him.
When he got closer to her, she pulled him by his shirt and whispered in his ear:
"I don’t think they are lying. I can feel it from their vibrations."
Ark drew back and stared at the panicked technicians, it seemed Damian was doubtful as well because he had not yet taken action.
Walking towards the display, Ark spoke to one of the technicians:
"Can you play the footage from the last two hours?"
The man briskly nodded and went to work, soon the video of their battle was playing on the large screen.
At first the technicians were relieved, watching how the spiders were kept at bay. But after a few minutes their expressions suddenly changed to that of mortification.
Because right in front of them they saw the spiders climb up the fence, they saw the electric fence spark to life... only to go off moments later.
The man who they met first suddenly fell to his knees, his eyes wide.
"No... this isn’t possible, this isn’t possible!"
Damian turned to leave the room, glancing at the screen once more and back to them.
"Arrest them under charge of treason."
*
The soldiers were more than happy to oblige, bundling up all the technicians who were screaming of their innocence out of the room.
Damian placed a cigarette in his mouth and Lauretta helped him light it.
He took a long drag before releasing the white cloud of smoke.
Only when they were alone did Ark speak.
"Why did you arrest them?"
Damian turned to him, a sly smile on his face.
"What do you mean?"
Ark frowned.
"We both know they are innocent."
The Captain glanced back at the screen for a long second before turning to leave the room.
"And yet, someone must take the fall."
"Up until we find the real culprit."
Damian opened the door, facing the pouring rain outside, then he chuckled lightly.
Suddenly, he slammed his foot against the edge of the door and cussed.
"I lost so many men today... but I never would have imagined that we would be fighting not just beasts— but fellow curse bearers as well."
