Chapter 112: Midnight Chat

As the blood of the cat drifted down the street, the boy continued speaking, completely unbothered by the ghostly sight.

"We are going with the second plan, I hope you’ve played your part well?"

Ark could not see them, but the woman nodded in response.

"Never contact me again."

The boy scoffed but said nothing after... their meeting was over.

Right behind the corner were two people who were definitely involved in what was going on in the shelter.

Ark could not miss out on the opportunity of finding out who they were and thankfully he was not currently in his body, so he could do just as he pleased...

He darted past the corner, his multiple eyes about to lock on the two figures when something exploded against his head, shattering his skull to pieces.

Ark’s body completely lost the coordination it once had, it seemed whatever had hit him had cut right through his entire body because his legs suddenly felt still and moved scatteredly.

His vision was completely blank save for one eye and he felt his consciousness ready depart from the beast, but just before it happened—

Ark managed to see one of the culprits in his last good eye, the sight of her was more than enough to make him twitch in shock

’Lauretta?’

**

The room suddenly became bright, the contrast between what he had been seeing and what was now in front of him causing Ark to squint his eyes.

He was back in the apartment but his mind was too busy racing to figure out anything else.

’Lauretta? Really?’

What would have motivated her to work behind the scenes in order to bring the shelter to ruin?

Humans actions were usually motivated by one reason or the other, basically, it was often sensible to some degree but the things that had been happening so far made absolutely no sense.

It was hard to see what one would gain from sabotaging their defences or boring a hole through the wall.

Obviously, Ark was not hundred percent certain that this was their doing but now he was beginning to think that the other happenings in the shelter were of human origin.

The knife that had killed the cat, and the blow that had killed his corpse was something too devastating for a normal person.

He was a curse bearer...

But were they working alone? Or are there more people involved in this circle?

He sighed.

’Tomorrow, I’ll look into it tomorrow.’

He had done what he could today, hopefully he would gain new insight in the morning.

Now finally done with his string of thoughts, Ark looked around, taking note of the room’s walls, they were just like his room but with a few more adjustments.

’I should have returned to my body, where am I?"

"Ark? Are you alright?"

Ark froze at the sound of the voice... and looked down.

In his left hand was a hair dryer and in his right hand was a comb that was currently half way through a girl’s hair.

The girl in question was seated in front of him already in her pyjamas, her skin was still glistening wet meaning it had not been long since she finished bathing.

He was not only in her room... he was also helping her dry her hair.

’What the hell is going on? Why does my body keep getting into these kinds of situations?!’

"Are you alright?" Faye asked again and Ark quickly ran the comb down.

"I’m perfect."

Faye turned to face him, momentarily causing his activity to halt.

"Sorry for making you do this, my Nanny often helped me out but... anyway, Olivia and Stella are too busy watching the next episode of the series."

Ark shook his head. "I understand."

Faye was a minister’s daughter, she was most likely used to things going her way and having people at her beck and call. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

Now all she had was herself and her friends, at least for the duration of the apocalypse.

He clicked the button of the dryer, allowing the hot hair to bathe her hair while he combed it.

As Ark ran his hand down her hair he was surprised by how soft it felt, it was as though he was grasping clouds within his plans.

"How is the shelter so far?" Ark asked while keeping his focus on her hair

Faye seemed to contemplate for a moment before speaking.

"So-So... It is still a new experience for me."

She paused for a while before adding:

"It’s weird isn’t it? The current situation I mean. One moment you’re in your house and the next thing you know everyone you grew up knowing is dead."

The atmosphere in the room became more somber but Faye attempted to laugh it away before she continued.

"The shelter isn’t as bad as I thought, although I’m mainly indoors at least the environment seems calm and safe."

’It’s calm, but as for safe... that part is debatable.’

But Ark could not tell her that so instead he nodded. He twisted her hair around the comb and pulled it down softly while the dryer blew the hair.

Faye turned to face him.

"How come you’re so good at this?"

She brought her finger to her chin and smiled.

"You practiced on your girlfriend?"

Click!

Ark flicked his finger against her forehead, right on the star shaped mark. Faye grabbed onto it and winced as a soft pain traveled through her head.

He had made sure to not overdo the force of the blow but not to the point where it was painless.

"Owww!"

Ark eyed her for a brief moment, hitting her mark had caused some sort of rebound as well. Marks were meant to be dormant up until awakening and yet... something seemed different about Faye’s mark.

And it wasn’t just the fact that it was a literal star at the center of her forehead.

"I’ve never had a girlfriend, actually, up till a few months ago I didn’t even have a female friend."

"Well, that is unexpected..." Faye said while rubbing her head.

And then her smile broadened, a mischievous glint in her sharp silver eyes.

"So, who do you have in mind?" She leaned a little closer towards him, causing Ark to retreat slightly as well.

"Who says I’m into anyone? My only love is for food and money."

"Heh, is that really true? Something tells me you’re lying."

Ark righted himself and dropped the dryer by her bed. He then grabbed onto her slender shoulders and turned her away from him.

"Stop making my work more difficult than it already is."

Ark saw no need in combing hair when someone was about to go to bed but since he had started, he was determined to finish it.

"Now hold still, perfection takes time."

Faye pouted but otherwise allowed him to continue his work.
