Chapter 113: The Truth Behind Ghosts

"I’m bored big bro Ark."

Ark still staring through his binoculars replied replied the boy:

"You were the one who asked to join us and now you can’t leave until we are done, go play with Emma or something."

Emma who was seated at the edge of the room didn’t even answer, she was already fast asleep.

The three of them were here for one reason and that was to investigate the so-called ghost. Ark had tried many times in the past few days to try confronting the ghost, he had traversed the halls multiple times but to no avail.

So he decided to wait for it to naturally occur. Him, Emma and the kid were currently in a military bus parked very far from the building.

The building had a long window that spanned from one edge of the hall to the other, a window that was wide enough for them to see though.

If the ghost were to show itself to anyone then they would finally be able to see it.

This was the third day and yet there was no result, but Ark didn’t give up, in the day he spent time here, while in the night he investigated the shelter using the new spider body he had stolen.

By now, Emma was fully aware of his nocturnal activities as well as the issue with Lauretta, it was unwise to keep her out of the loop after all.

"It’s been three days big bro, maybe the ghost has moved out? What if it’s in another building?"

Ark blurred out the boy’s complaints when a woman entered the hall. He reached backward and tapped Emma forcefully.

Emma stirred and rubbed her eyes, "Did something happen?"

"Something just might..."

Ark watched the woman walk through the hall with a basket in hand, at first everything was normal, up until the point when the woman froze.

Through his binoculars Ark could see her tremble in fear just before slowly walking back, and then she screamed, her eyes wide open in horror.

"Come here!" Ark said, pulling the kid next to him and shoving the binoculars into his hands.

The boy fumbled with it for a second before looking through the scope, after some time of observation the boy dropped the binoculars and frowned.

"There is nothing there bro..."

Ark nodded, a strange smile appearing on his lips.

"Exactly, there is nothing there."

Both he and Emma looked confused by his statement, but Ark was already getting out of the vehicle.

"Let’s go. Emma, I’ll carry you, we need to get there quickly."

She nodded and climbed onto his back causing the kid to frown as he watched her get comfortable in his spot.

Emma was still trying to act helpless in front of the citizens. Initially, Ark was not sure if she just enjoyed it or if she had another reason in mind but slowly he began to notice something...

People seemed to let down their guard around her. She was like a helpless blind girl to some, rumours that she was even a supportive Curse bearer were already circulating.

With the current way they viewed her, Emma was the best person to catch anyone by surprise.

"Try to catch up kid," Ark said as he placed his arms underneath Emma’s legs to keep her in place.

Emma smiled. "This should be fun, let’s go!"

Ark suddenly sprinted forward, charging straight at the shelter.

Emma’s orange hair fluttered in the air and she lifted her hands in excitement, as the wind rushed past them.

Shortly after, they were in front of the shelter.

They both walked in and quickly hurried to the hall where they met the woman sitting on the floor, her face buried in her palms.

Emma was the first to speak, she walked up to the wagon and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Are you alright?"

The woman flinched at first but then, she slowly calmed down.

"I’m a curse bearer, you can talk to me."

The woman nodded and pointed to the empty hallway.

"I saw it... the ghost, I saw it!"

Emma nodded, running her hand down the woman’s back in a comforting manner.

"What was it like?"

The woman froze for a moment.

"Not here." She grabbed onto Emma’s shirt and tugged it, "Let’s get out of here!"

After getting outside, it took a long time for the woman to regain her composure. Then she finally gave them her description of the ghost.

"It was like a very tall man but its skin was grey, like decaying flesh. Its eyes were small, no bigger than a black button and its head..."

She sucked in a deep breath.

"It had tentacles falling down from its face."

Ark nodded and wrote down everything she had said, then they all escorted her to one of the officials.

They were used to cases like this so they already knew what they had to do.

When they were alone, Emma finally got the chance to ask the question she had on her mind.

"What do you guys mean by there was nothing?"

They began walking away, moving towards the other buildings.

"It’s simple, we saw nothing..."

When the so-called ghost appeared before her, Ark had seen absolutely nothing, the hall was empty save for her.

"The ghost is an illusion."

Emma frowned slightly, "How can you be so sure."

"Well there are a few reasons why I think so. First of all, both Me and the Kid did some investigation."

The boy smiled smugly.

"I was the chief detective!"

"Yeah yeah chief. Well as I was saying... no two testimonies match."

Emma suddenly grabbed onto his shirt when she realized she had almost slipped up.

"You mean their experiences are different?" She asked from beside him.

"Exactly, the first person I interviewed saw a large shadow, this one saw an octopus man while another saw a very tall ’ghost person’.

No low tier beast would have so many transformations and if the Illusion was made by a beast... let’s just say they would be worse things to worry about.

"There is no ghost, all they are seeing is merely an illusion."

Someone in the shelter was purposely sowing fear in the hearts of the people.

But why?
