Chapter 52: Abducted

The next few minutes were a blur of severed limbs, broken exoskeletons and violent screeches.

The ERD had arrived just in time, alongside the professor from the Center and a woman with blonde hair and scarlet eyes.

The fight did not last for more than five minutes. Members of the ERD were far more experienced than him and had time to build up their spirit cores so they were considerably stronger.

Ark on the other hand was a complete newbie with no training and a curse that he could not use quite well.

Maybe if it was the ERD alone then it might have been a fairer fight but the blonde woman was a menace.

She controlled the water, a terrifying power for someone who lived in Lorsine. Using them like bullets, she ripped through their exoskeleton with ease and alone, she accounted for more than fifty percent of the now dead ants.

Ark was seated on the edge of the open ambulance boot, receiving treatment for his injuries as he watched the aftermath of the fight. Like the last time he got injured, there was a nurse as well as a healer attending to him.

Some distance away from him, in front of the pile of monster corpses, the blonde woman was speaking with the professor and making gestures at the ants and then to his surprise, she stopped and turned to face him.

Immediately their eyes met, Ark swiftly faced the other direction, watching her from the corner of his eyes.

She stood there for a moment and began walking towards the ambulance.

Ark stiffened slightly, causing the healer to reprimand him.

That woman... something told him she meant trouble.

Once the healer finished with Ark’s arms, he swiftly stood up and was about to brisk walk out of there when the woman held onto his shoulder.

"Why the hurry? Can’t we just chat a little?"

Ark slowly turned around, his mind running through the endless possibilities.

Most people didn’t speak with him, in fact, they wanted to be as far away from him as possible. Why then was this strange mysterious beauty interested in talking with him?

Plus that look on her face... she stared at him as though he was a five course meal.

’A kidnapper? A pervert? A perverted kidnapper?’

Those thoughts raced through his mind, so once the woman took a step forward, Ark bolted, running as fast as he could under the rain.

But before he could move a couple of centimeters, he felt his legs leave the floor.

He had been caught, lifted above the floor by the blonde woman.

She turned her hand, turning Ark to face her in the process.

His eyes squinted to the point where only his golden pupils could be seen.

"Umm... I know I’m eighteen but I’m not that experienced in this type of stuff, so if you would please let me go I would really appreciate—"

His eyes slowly trailed down, unconsciously locking on the woman’s generous bosom, there were a few undone buttons revealing a water drop mark and her clothes were wet due to the rain...

His mouth ran ahead of his brain as he spoke.

"On second thoughts... I think I’ve had a change of heart."

He then looked up at the woman’s face, currently she had an amused expression and her lips curled up into a smile just before she burst out in laughter.

"This kid is really something!" She said, all while still having Ark a few feet above the ground.

"Come with me," She said, carrying Ark to a vehicle parked by the edge of the street. "You’re coming to my house."

***

Ironically the blonde woman’s car was a yellow boxy suv with high ground clearance and a tyre strapped at the back.

Both she and Ark entered the car and drove off, leaving the disturbing behind them.

Ark felt his heart drop once he glanced back at the carnage through the side mirror. Was this what it meant to be a curse bearer?

Watching people die on a daily basis while being only able to do the bare minimum?

He always wanted to be a curse bearer to live a comfortable life, but now Ark was slowly beginning to consider other things.

He needed to be strong enough to protect others. Not everyone was privileged to be marked and so he had to at least do the best he could to prevent what happened today from ever repeating.

This was not even the Apocalypse Descent and yet so many people had died... how then would it be if the apocalypse were to truly descend?

The blonde woman glanced at Ark.

"Don’t beat yourself over it..."

She turned the vehicle onto the next lane and went past an intersection.

"You fought against the beasts on your own before we arrived, you did your best, you should be proud of yourself."

Ark stared out the window, watching as the rain thrummed against the glass, slowly drifting down.

"I don’t feel so proud though..."

The woman nodded and then in a low tone she said:

"Neither do I..."

After a short moment of silence, Ark turned to face the woman.

"Is it really okay to be leaving? Don’t you have to report back to the ERD station?"

"Why would I have to do that?"

"Isn’t that protocol?"

It was generally known that after a gate was cleared the members of the ERD would go back to the station to give a detailed report of what had happened.

"Well yes, but I’m not part of the ERD."

"Is that so..."

Ark watched her with a new degree of wariness.

’So I entered the car of an unknown curse bearer...’

He coughed.

"Then who are you?"

The woman smiled, looking briefly away from the road as she spoke.

"Thalia, vice commander of the fourth squad."

Ark’s eyes slowly widened.

The memory of the woman laughing earlier came along with another memory, the memory of one of the representatives laughing after bagging two of the best candidates during the selection.

He had not paid much attention to the representatives at the time since all he wanted was to hear his name called, hence his mistake.

The question now was...

’What was the vice commander of the fourth squad doing with him?’
