Chapter 55: Nightmares

There was a thick darkness all around, clouding Ark’s vision, in the depths of the darkness nothing was made known to him, he simply waited, powerless to do anything else.

A strong chilly wind blew past him, rattling his clothes and then Ark felt something moist land on his cheek, it was then followed by a multitude of other raindrops.

Unlike the rain Ark had grown to know, it sounded catastrophic and twisted, like something that was not meant to exist.

It was like each drop crashing against the floor came with a strange un-earthly sound, a sound oddly similar to twisting iron.

An abnormality.

He was running, his heart pounding in his chest to the point that he felt it might burst into a thousand pieces, spilling his blood on the desolate landscape

The further he ran, it seemed the less progress he made, and that laughter... it was very much present, a mocking voice in his head disorienting every thought.

’But when did the laughing start?’

Boom!

He collided against something hard, knocking him back to the darkness below. Ark lifted his chin up, raising his head to the maximum point just to get a full glimpse at the colossal being before him.

A formless, shapeless shadow without a mouth or face.

An imposing presence that sent every fiber of his body on fire.

An anomaly.

The creature stared down at him, filling Ark with an intense feeling of primal fear— and then it laughed, its voice like a thousand wails.

The scenery changed once again, this time, Ark could hear crying, it was the voice of a young child.

The ground... it was filled with blood, the pungent crimson liquid rising up to his ankles.

All around him were corpses of countless people, some were being feasted on by horrid beings Ark could not describe, while others just simply floated in the morbid river of blood.

But once Ark became conscious of it, they all froze, their eyes locked on each movement he made.

’Something is wrong...’

Somehow, the bloody field did not seem to bother him, the multiple corpses strewn across the floor seemed insignificant.

The countless eyes of both the living and the dead were just like a mild disturbance.

His mind was empty.

Step—

He took a step forward, moving towards the voice.

Step—

It was the only thing he could think of, the screams of the child like the cries of a siren, willing his body to move.

Step—

He turned around, and yet he saw... nothing.

Ark shook his head, pushing the darkness out of the corners of his mind. That was when he saw it, a girl, kneeling down next to the twisted corpse of a woman.

’This girl...’

She was the girl he had protected from one of the monsters just recently.

That was what his body told him.

As Ark got closer to the girl, something strange was happening.

With each step, her voice grew more quieter instead of intensifying, this continued until he was right next to her.

Her crying had ceased completely by then and her face shot up to meet him.

Bloodshot eyes, black protruding veins decorated her face, and her very voice dripped of poison.

"YOU FAILED!"

"Haaaa!" Ark drew a sharp breath as he sat up straight in his bed. His sheets were soaked in sweat and his heatrate had intensified, making him jittery.

He wipes the sweat off his face.

"A dream?"

It felt far too real to be one, it was as though he experienced it firsthand.

"Damn it!" Ark heard a curse from the side as Silver suddenly materialized out of thin air.

She sat down in front of Ark, her face creased with worry as she dug through her pockets looking for something.

Her movements were frantic, far different from her normally composed self which made Ark slightly worried.

"That damn scum, they’ve found us."

"Silver, what is going on?"

She met his gaze briefly before pulling out a dark chalk from her clothes.

Silver then began to trace an unfamiliar pattern from her palm down to her wrist, and then when she was finally done, she pointed the arm at Ark.

He did not yet trust her and would have normally shoved her away, but somehow, Ark knew that she should not be interrupted.

The patterns shone a silver light and then they dissipated, ruining into a whirlwind of sparks that flew towards Ark, dissipating into his skin.

Silver let out a breath.

"That should do for now. Come, we have to accelerate your training."

Ark was completely confused by her actions but there was one thing that he was sure of, whatever was happening had to do with the dark apparition he had seen in his dream.

"Who is he?" Ark asked, his tone serious.

"Something evil..."

Ark felt his blood boil at her invasive answer.

"Something evil? Stop dodging and answer the question! I’ve put up with all your mysteries already."

With what we had seen... he could no longer ignore her silence, Ark had to know what was coming and how to tackle it at all costs.

He was not a fool, right from the attack in the alley down to the strange archive, Ark had always suspected something was up but was waiting for it to slowly unfold.

Now, it seemed he no longer had the luxury of time.

Silver stared at him, biting her lower lip in frustration, then she sighed.

"Zephryr...that is all I can say. If you want to know more then you’ll have to get stronger first. Get strong enough to handle the truth and I’ll have no problems with telling you."

A familiar golden screen appeared before him.

Ark eyed the screen and glanced at silver, the information she had given was very underwhelming. A simple name... although Ark knew that name held much significance, it was simply not enough.

But at the same time, he knew that it was all he was going to get. He couldn’t not force it out of her and he could abandon her and the console...

"Get stronger right? You better keep to your end of the bargain."
