Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Roadside Encounter

You Meng’s voice was grave. "It’s over on the captain’s end. Gongsun Hai is dead. Come to team headquarters."

Shu Feng’s heart sank. ’Brother Gongsun... is dead?’

Gongsun Hai had been an official member of the Guardian Flame’s Lei Jiang Branch and the team’s Mage, well-versed in all kinds of magical knowledge. Though he wasn’t one for conversation, he was a kind-hearted man beneath a cold exterior and had taught Shu Feng a great deal about magic. The fact that he had fallen during a mission deeply saddened Shu Feng.

"Captain, it’s me, Shu Feng!"

"Come in!"

The moment Shu Feng stepped into the captain’s office, he saw Zhou Yang sitting in the captain’s chair and You Meng lying on the sofa. There wasn’t a trace of a smile on either of their faces.

A sorrowful atmosphere permeated the office.

"Captain, this is the Demon Spear Camilla retrieved."

Shu Feng handed the Demon Spear, its Divinity already extracted, to Zhou Yang. He then recounted how he had destroyed the Void Demon Gate, though he omitted certain details from his story.

Zhou Yang said slowly, "Shu Feng, that was outstanding work. You’ve performed a great service, and the organization will be sure to reward you for it. Go home and get some rest. In three days, attend Gongsun Hai’s funeral."

"Yes, Captain!" Shu Feng hesitated for a moment before asking, "Are Brother Eugene and Brother Gao Wen alright?"

Zhou Yang said, "They were both severely injured. However, with the Guardian Flame’s medical capabilities, they’ll be back on their feet in three days."

"I’ll take my leave, then."

With those words, Shu Feng departed from Beiling Street.

「On a brightly lit street in Lei Jiang City.」

’Brother Gongsun... he was a master of magic and all sorts of Secret Techniques. With enough time to prepare, he could take down even a Spirit Master-level expert. For a master like him to die on a mission... it’s just too dangerous. This world is far too dangerous! I have to get stronger!’

As Shu Feng walked down the street, his thoughts churned, and the importance of power became clearer than ever. It wasn’t until he joined the Guardian Flame that he truly understood just how dangerous this world, invaded by Void Demons, really was.

The deaths of dozens in Zhong Jietong’s residential complex, the deaths of over a hundred students at Qingling Reservoir, and the deaths of hundreds in Mulu Village—news of all these incidents had been suppressed. Ordinary people had no idea just how perilous their lives were.

Only the Spiritualists understood. Every year, countless of their own died in battle across the world to protect it. It was their unending sacrifices, one after another, that maintained Blue Star’s fragile, false peace.

This was precisely why Spiritualists possessed privileges that placed them far above ordinary people. They were in a time of war, a life-or-death struggle for the survival of the human race. If their world fell, humanity would be at the mercy of Void Demons for whom humans were on the menu. A chill ran down Shu Feng’s spine just thinking about it.

POP! POP! POP!

Suddenly, an incredibly terrifying wave of Void Demonic Qi erupted from all directions, sweeping through the area.

Wherever the Void Demonic Qi passed, the streetlights flickered and died.

"No! It hurts! So much Pain!"

"*Cough! Cough!* It feels awful!"

"..."

Black wisps of energy appeared on the faces of the pedestrians on the street. They collapsed to the ground, writhing and wailing as their faces twisted in agony.

’A Void Demon! Dammit, could that powerful demon be here to hunt me down?’

Startled, Shu Feng waved his hand. Ninety Spirit Warrior-level Black Dog Void Demons and twenty Goblin Leaders armed with heavy machine guns materialized around him.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The sound of clashing blades echoed from the other end of the street. There, clad in silver armor, the strikingly beautiful and martial Shui Lingyan was covered in wounds, fending off three young Ghost-devouring Demons with a silver dagger.

Shui Lingyan was covered in injuries. Her movements were sluggish, and she gasped for breath, gritting her teeth as she barely held her own against the three Ghost-devouring Demons.

The Blood Blade Demon Marshal stood quietly in the distance. His body was tattered, dripping black blood, and he stared fixedly at Shui Lingyan with a savage glint in his eyes.

Shu Feng realized, ’Their target is her!’

"Kill him!"

The Blood Blade Demon Marshal glanced at Shu Feng, a cold light flashing in his eyes as he gave the icy command.

In a flash, two Ghost-devouring Demons lunged madly toward Shu Feng.

"Kill them!"

A cold glint flashed in Shu Feng’s eyes as he gave the order.

The ninety Black Dog Void Demons immediately lunged at the two Ghost-devouring Demons.

The twenty Goblin Leaders raised their heavy machine guns. Muzzle flashes flickered as they unleashed a dense rain of bullets, forming a steel curtain that blasted toward the Blood Blade Demon Marshal and the two Ghost-devouring Demons. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

The Blood Blade Demon Marshal sneered. He took a single step and, as if predicting their trajectory, effortlessly dodged the dense hail of bullets.

Shu Feng’s eyes lit up as he saw a glimmer of hope in defeating the Blood Blade Demon Marshal. ’He’s seriously injured! He no longer has the Power to kill me in an instant!’

If the Blood Blade Demon Marshal had been at his peak, he would have slaughtered Shu Feng’s entire Synthetic Warrior Corps one by one, even if they all swarmed him at once. But now, he was merely dodging the Goblin Leaders’ attacks instead of striking back. He was clearly severely injured.

"Slowdown Technique!"

Four Goblin Shamans materialized, pointed their Magic Staffs, and gestured toward one of the Ghost-devouring Demons.

Four beams of hazy gray Magic light instantly enveloped the Ghost-devouring Demon.

A black Void Demon Membrane materialized over the Ghost-devouring Demon’s body, resisting the Magic light’s corrosive effect. In exchange, however, its movements slowed abruptly.

In that instant, ten Black Dog Void Demons opened their massive jaws and pounced viciously on the slowed Ghost-devouring Demon.

The Ghost-devouring Demon’s claws, sharp as hooks, lashed out, tearing wildly at the ten Black Dog Void Demons.

Blood splattered as the Ghost-devouring Demon crushed the Black Dog Void Demons’ eyes and heads. But the creatures were fearless. Even with eyes gouged out and skulls pierced, they continued to slam themselves into their target. The other Black Dog Void Demons seized the opportunity to surge forward, sinking their teeth in and ripping away chunks of flesh.

Meanwhile, the other Ghost-devouring Demon used an elusive Body Technique, appearing before Shu Feng in just a few bounds.

BANG!

Shu Feng made a shooting gesture with his left hand.

An arrow of darkness, shining like moonlight, streaked through the air like a meteor and slammed into the Ghost-devouring Demon’s head, blowing the Spirit Master-level creature’s skull to pieces.

Camilla stood atop a tall building, looking down on the battlefield from afar. She gripped the [Dark Moon Bow] tightly in her hands and took aim at the Blood Blade Demon Marshal.

The Blood Blade Demon Marshal’s gaze turned cold and fixed on Camilla. "My senses have grown dull as well," he said icily. "To think I didn’t even notice your presence."
