Chapter 70: A Cruel World

Damion walked through the jungle absentmindedly, the gravity of Earth’s situation hitting him hard.

Who would have thought that the sudden cataclysmic event that had caused Earth to mutate and grant every living being Abilities had a reason?

The masses were only told that invaders were attacking, and Humans were granted powers by an unknown source to defend themselves.

Perhaps the authorities hid the real information to not cause panic, and instead spread lies about invading races and the need to exterminate them.

Although they were right, they just didn’t disseminate the right information so as to manipulate the people and retain their control. But the revelation from Nyx had made him understand that Earth was in deep shit, extinction level shit!

"The Ancient Ones," Damion muttered.

He delved deeper into the info, and he was able to deduce that time was running out, or the authorities just wanted to cultivate strong talent quickly, because why would they send first-years to the warzone?

"Crap!" Damion voiced out. "Is that why I found an Extraterrestrial?"

Nyx circled Damion’s head silently, letting him digest the information he had received.

"Wait till you meet the Demons," Nyx suddenly interrupted, causing Damion to look up. "They’ve failed and lost their sovereignty multiple times, yet they find a way to circumvent the extinction and subservience by massacring their enslavers."

Damion gasped. "Are they that strong?"

"Considering the fact that they are severely weakened after they’re enslaved, that goes to show just how strong they are."

"Then how did they lose in the first place?" Damion asked, not quite understanding.

"The goal of the Demon Race is to be the sole rulers of the universe, so they intentionally lose and then find a loophole in the slave contract to kill the winning race,"

"My liege has fought the demon race for a very long time, but because of Ophidia, they haven’t been exterminated yet," Nyx explained. "It is now your goal to deal with them."

Damion sighed. He almost felt like banging his head against a wall, but he calmed himself down. "I haven’t dealt with one problem yet, but another has reared its ugly head."

Damion suddenly paused in his tracks. "Hold up, does that mean I might encounter a Demon here?" He said, cold sweat matting his back.

"The demons are still a long way from here, so that’s unlikely... unless they cross their boundaries and decide to infiltrate the Human Race region."

Damion sighed in relief, his heart beat returning to its normal rhythm.

"Though they’ve done that already," Nyx added.

Damion’s eyes went wide, and his heart almost leaped into his mouth. He shot Nyx a deep stare, and the metal-like spherical shaped ball returned the stare.

"What?" Nyx asked, genuinely confused.

"The Demons, have infiltrated?" Damion asked.

"Yes, but I’ve sent the rest of my men to deal with them, they’ll be back soon,"

Damion sized Nyx up. "What men?"

"My brothers and sisters of course," Nyx responded. "Did you think I was the last survivor of my kind? There are still like fifty of us left."

Damion grabbed his head and almost pulled out a large clump of hair. Nyx was...

Damion suddenly paused, again, his eyes staring straight ahead.

"Are you sure this is the right way?" Damion asked, his gaze meeting the stare of the person before him.

"Nyx?" Damion called out, but Nyx had already turned invisible and refused to speak for some reason.

"So you’re my target?" The fat boy standing before Damion asked. He wore clothing that barely fit his overly large belly, his limbs were so large it was a wonder how he moved, and the fact that he held a burger in his... third hand, made the picture more weird.

"You look weak," the boy said again, taking a big bite out of the burger and spilling grease over his chest while smearing his mouth simultaneously. One could only wonder what sort of ingredient made up the burger.

"I should make this quick, I still have a cake to eat back at my room," the boy uttered.

Damion barely had the chance to register the words before he was sent flying by a punch to his guts. He vomited mouthfuls of blood, hacking up bits and pieces of his ruptured internal organs.

He hadn’t even recovered when the fat boy attacked again, barreling towards Damion and jumping in the air.

He dived down like a wrecking ball and was just about to crush Damion when suddenly, his head disappeared, and Damion was pulled out of the way.

"I can’t believe you lost so fast to this ball of fat," Nyx’s voice tore through the air, his displeasure evident in his tone as the fat boy’s body crashed behind. "Wake up."

Nyx pushed against Damion’s head, smearing blood over his face. "WAKE UP!!" Nyx yelled, and that shout seemed to finally shock Damion awake.

A mind-splitting pain tore through Damion’s psyche as he shook awake. He subconsciously grabbed his abdomen and held it, trying to suppress the pain.

Fortunately, he had enough Mana reserves which already began to heal him.

Slowly, he regained some color to his face and sat up.

He looked around, and seeing the state of the fat boy’s body, he retched, undoing the repairs his Mana had done to him.

Blood poured out of his mouth and nostrils, and he almost passed out again. The gruesome and grotesque sight made his belly churn, and he hurriedly looked away.

Damion breathed hard. "You killed him," he said, sending Nyx a horrified glance.

"Yes," Nyx replied with a blink of his eyes.

"Why?"

Nyx moved forward, examining Damion’s facial expression. "What do you mean why? He was about to put you out of commission for the next one month!"

"And did that deserve death?"

"Did it not!" Nyx retorted, moving back and sizing Damion. "You need to face the facts, child. This is a cruel world, more cruel than you think,"

"Don’t have pity on anyone who even has the thoughts of injuring you. This dog eat dog universe would crush you if you keep that mentality. Strive to be the strongest, and if you want to do that, you first need to have a strong mind and mindset,"

"If your thinking isn’t in line with your goals, then you’ll only hold yourself back,"

"You seek strength right? Well strength is not for the weak, wake up to reality."

Damion sat there in silence, surprised by Nyx’s sudden outburst. He didn’t know what had caused him to snap, but he thought about his words and really considered them.

It was true that he didn’t wish for the boy to die, but didn’t he want Drax dead?

There was no balance in his thoughts and actions, and he needed to change that according to Nyx.

But, how?

It wasn’t like he was going to change on a whim. It was a gradual process that needed time, and also someone to guide him.

’Isn’t that why I have him though?’ Damion pondered, his eyes seemingly beginning to glow with understanding.

"Now, about that other aspect of your Ability, aren’t you going to use it on him?" Nyx said, interrupting Damion’s thoughts.

Damion frowned. "You said the same thing earlier, what aspect are you talking about exactly?"

"Huh! Necromancy of course."
