Chapter 91: No Room for Mercy

The mystery of the Yellow Sun was still fresh in Damion’s mind.

The Wolf had received a boost to its psyche. A boost strong enough to negate a level 10 Dragon’s Authority.

This wasn’t so surprising though. Toby had received a boost to his psyche too, making his understanding of his Ability stronger, leading to it gaining a solid form.

This was the only effect he had seen so far, but he expected more and was ready to counter anything.

He unhesitatingly left Noriko and his partner behind, heading in the direction he felt Matilda’s tug.

The tug was getting stronger with every second that passed, and he began to feel worried about her.

What if something was happening to her?

Damion picked up speed, blitzing through the jungle at his top speed.

He thought back to Kaiden, and terrible thoughts crossed his mind.

[Shadow Possession]

Scales grew over just body, his speed, strength and durability reaching a whole new level. His eyes lit up with black flames, and his purple eyes narrowed into slits.

Damion’s predatory instincts kicked in, and he began weaving through the dense foliage of the jungle like it was his backyard.

This improved his efficiency, and in exchange, his energy level dropped.

The drop in energy was miniscule and worth it though, because Damion found himself crossing large distances quickly, reaching for the sound barrier.

One more push was all he needed, and he would begin moving at the speed of sound, but he wasn’t quite there yet. Even Kaiden and Drax hadn’t broken past that wall.

Even Captain Shodan was unable to break the sound barrier, though he moved far faster than any of them could.

The direction which the tug was coming from changed abruptly, heading in another direction, and Damion didn’t hesitate to pivot on his feet and chase after it.

The chase went on for a few more seconds, before Damion caught sight of a lightning streak in the distance.

His anger bubbled, and he almost lost himself to rage... almost.

He calmly assessed the situation using his brains and not his heart.

The direction Kaiden was running towards, with Matilda swung over his shoulders like a sack of potatoes, wasn’t where the base was located.

He thought of Kaiden taking her somewhere else to do ’something’ to her, but one look at their backs, he understood that that wasn’t it.

Behind them, a horde of Wolves were following them, their barks, snarls and howls filling the air.

Somehow, Damion hadn’t heard the sound until he saw them, adding another layer of mystery to the scene unfolding before his eyes.

He scanned Kaiden and Matilda again, his eyes settling on Matilda as he spoke to her telepathically.

No reply.

"She’s unconscious," Damion concluded.

He had barely had these thoughts, when out of nowhere, a humanoid burst through the leaves, landing beside Damion with a dull boom and running beside him.

Damion distanced himself from the new opponent, expecting a clash, but on second thought he paused, staring calmly at the figure.

"Kenzo?" Damion asked, more rhetorically than literally, his voice surprisingly calm compared to the raging storm of emotions within him.

His shock was justified. The Kenzo running beside him wasn’t who he expected.

He was transformed, but he wasn’t fully.

He had the feral, but contained, aura around him, reminding Damion of himself in his partially transformed state.

Raw but controlled, primal but intelligent, retaining a sense of reasoning.

His body was covered in black armor-like plates. They didn’t resemble scales at all, but looked more like armor.

Red energy was seen running through the seams, and his lengthy red hair undulated wildly behind.

His nails were blunt, and a mask-like covering was over his face, with two parts rising above akin to horns.

His military trousers looked different too, as if they had been forcefully subjected to the change. They were still black, but the parts flying to the sides made it look cool.

Kenzo didn’t spare Damion more than a single glance, before he pushed forward, shooting ahead with great speed, the red glow in his eyes pulsing.

The two Lesser Dragons shot forward, leaving a trail of purple/black and silver/red behind.

They curved around the Wolves, bearing their own fangs and massacring them swiftly.

[Shadow Puppeteer]

Damion didn’t waste time and pushed forward, letting the Shadow skill do its work.

There were no limits to the number of Shadow Puppets he could have, and he wasn’t going leave any corpse unpuppeteered.

With the thought in his mind, he and Kenzo landed before Kaiden, their dangerous forms shocking the lightning user for a second as he came to a skidding halt.

Kaiden huffed out a steaming, hot breath, his gaze settling on the new arrivals.

"Arghh... you must be the Demon Race, right?" Kaiden said, his grip on Matilda tightening.

Damion had the urge to cancel his transformation and show Kaiden his face, but Kenzo stopped him with his words.

’Whether he knows it’s us or not... I’m killing him,’ he said, leaving no room for argument.

Damion wanted to stop him, but once again, a faint voice in his head stopped him.

’H..e.lp m... me,’ the voice came in broken syllables.

’Matilda!’ Damion uttered internally, his voice calm and soothing.

Being this close to her twin and Drakon, her body was already healing from whatever damage she had received, and she was able to say that much to them.

It didn’t look like something serious from Damion’s point of view, but he could tell that she was in pain.

"Put her down," Kenzo suddenly said, his deep, grating voice tearing through the air, and a silver aura wrapping around his sword.

Damion squinted his eyes. When had the sword appeared in his hand? He had clearly seen him running with empty hands.

There was no time for questions, and Kenzo didn’t want to hear any from anyone.

A silver glow came through the seams of his armor scales, signalling the activation of his Heir ability —as Damion liked to call it.

His Nodachi glowed with a bright silver light, its deathly sharpness palpable and the sound of sharpening blades filled the air.

"I recognize that," Kaiden said, a knowing smile creeping up his face.

Suddenly the glowing Silver blade exploded with a raging inferno of red, volatile flames, the terrifying heat spreading out immediately, setting the jungle ablaze.

"Or maybe not," Kaiden added, his danger sense screaming for him to run.
