Chapter 219: Charming her

"Oh? Did we decide on wine?"

Luciana ignored Cardan’s words as she grabbed his hand and dragged her out of the room, leaving Esme and Leo behind.

He let himself be dragged by her and she was not feeling thankful about it.

She did not stop walking until they were inside his room. The pond water sparkled in the starlight and the water reflected on the crystal chandeliers.

Despite the peaceful ambiance, all Luciana could see was violence.

The man was getting on her nerves.

Letting go of his hand, she closed the door behind herself and looked at him, ’’What is it that you want from me?" she asked him coldly.

Luciana expected Cardan to drop his facade now, to be offended by her rudeness, and maybe make an attempt to kill her or worse, torture her.

But she was not scared by any of that.

What scared her more was a man she could not comprehend. Intentions hidden so deep that she could not gauge through them.

’’How was your day?" The words that left his mouth were the words she never expected to hear at this moment.

And more so, while she was expecting him to lose his temper, he was calm and unruffled.

’How was your day?’

In the past year whenever he asked that question, it was his sign for her to tell him about what Esme did during the whole day.

Luciana closed her eyes, feeling slight discomfort in her chest. She could not discern the feeling and that made the anger rise even more. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

As her eyes snapped open, her fingers curled into a fist, ’’Can you stop asking me about Esme? Can you... keep your distance from us?"

’’And there you go, blaming me for your delusions,’’ He stepped towards her.

Confused by his words and their proximity, Luciana stepped back instinctively, her golden hair framed her face as she tilted her head to the side.

’’When I ask you about your day, I just want to know about your day. Not about anything else like you would like to assume,’’ Cardan said, lowering his body to her height.

Luciana pressed her palm on his chest as she pushed him away without giving it a second thought.

Her face turned red and hot, from anger, as she convinced herself, ’’Don’t play that with me,’’ she narrowed her eyes, ’’I am no fool. Are you trying to charm me first to get closer to whatever evil motives you have?"

She felt like a fool for ever believing that this man might have changed.

’’Tell me, My Lady, is it working?" he tilted his head to the side, his blue eyes twinkling in amusement.

Luciana glared at him.

’’Tell me, Lucy, are you charmed by me?"

Luciana laughed, crushing a butterfly that flew in her heart when he called her so intimately. She stomped on the butterfly in her mind till the wings turned into dust. ’’In your dreams,’’ she huffed.

Cardan raised a brow.

’’You should be more like your elder brother if you want to charm me,’’ Hitting the nail in place was never so satisfying before.

As she watched his smugness being wiped off his face, Luciana tilted her chin and turned around.

She opened the door and her own arrogance was wiped off her face when she saw the said ’elder brother’ standing at the door.

Luciana licked her lips, looking back at Cardan who was standing there with a gradually darkening face. In his presence, she could not even tell Aleister that her words were only meant to annoy the man.

But as her eyes met Aleister’s, a shared look of understanding passed between them. It was as if the man understood her words and actions.

Luciana did not know how long she stood there before she found the ability to speak, ’’You can’t talk to her about the past. She will not survive it... if she regains her memories,’’ she glanced at his face quietly.

At this point, Luciana was long over her doubts that this might not be Aleister and some impostor of his.

The fact that Esme was capable of protecting herself, and that Aleister was alive lifted off all the burden in her chest.

She knew it was time for her to let go of the past and get the burden off her shoulders.

’’I know,’’ Aleister’s face did not betray any of his emotions. He just nodded at her and she could see a hint of gratefulness in his eyes.

The arrogant man who looked at people like they were beneath him was looking at her gratefully.

Oh, what love did to people!

’’Thank you...’’ Aleister tilted his head down to meet her gaze, ’’...For taking care of my girl.’’

Luciana felt like she could breathe now. The nightmare of the year was over.

Stepping back from him, she curtsied to Aleister, bowing her head, ’’Apologies for all my actions in the past. For everything.’’

It was a big thing for her to bow in front of a man like that yet somehow, she knew it was necessary.

Suddenly, she felt a warmth on her shoulders.

She raised her head and glanced at Cardan who straightened her up by grabbing her shoulders, ’’You don’t need to do this. Most of it was not your fault. Any of it was not your fault.’’

’’Since it was yours, you should take the cue and apologize now,’’ she said indifferently, a hint of mocking in her eyes.

Cardan glanced at her speechlessly.

Aleister’s lips quirked up in an amused smile.

She ignored both of them on her way out.

As far as she had seen how they behaved with each other, it was better for her to leave as fast as she could to protect her life.

Luciana had yet to reach the room when a loud sound resounded in the vicinity, the ground beneath her feet shook a bit and she grabbed the wall for support.

Her gaze snapped back towards the closed door of Cardan’s room.

Did they start fighting already?

She was speechless.
