Chapter 309: I can tell you

Esme nodded in understanding. But after a moment, her face scrunched up slightly, ’’But I don’t just have this one ability. Since young, I have had a keen hearing ability. Other than magic and mind control, I can master hellfire which is a heavenly fire. And when I was young... we were running from our kingdom and I thought my brother had passed away. Back then I broke into tears and it started raining... I...’’ Esme sighed. She did not know how to put it but all she could do was look at him helplessly, ’’And now after I regained my memories, I did not die. Nothing strange happened to me.’’

The whole thing was bizarre to her no matter how she looked at it. Esme was not being ungrateful for her powers. In a world where strength claimed sovereignty, she knew how important powers were, not for anything else, just for the sake of protecting herself and the people she held dear.

But for that, she needed to have control over her powers instead of being controlled by them. Yet, the mystery behind her unusual abilities was always hidden behind shadows and for someone as wary as her, it was hard to not be paranoid.

What if she ended up being devoured by her powers because she could not master them?

Esme broke out in goosebumps, looking like a cat who went through some hair-raising incident.

Rezeph laughed when he looked at her. He could almost read the thoughts in her mind because her face said it all. He wanted to tell her she was overthinking but he doubted she would believe him.

Even if she could not master her powers, she would just not be able to become powerful but she won’t be harmed by them at all.

And Rezeph doubted that with him around, she would not be able to grasp the essence of the things that she could not decipher before.

But nonetheless, she had him. There was nothing she should worry about no matter how things turn out to be.

He pushed himself to his feet and approached her. With his hand on her head, he stroked her hair gently as he promised, "Regardless of anything, I will protect you for a lifetime.’’

Esme froze. After a moment, she relaxed. If this was how it felt to have a father... then maybe it was not that bad after all.

Rezeph quietly looked at her, ’’Why don’t you take a rest first? You are getting married tomorrow.’’

Esme pouted. Knowing that she was not getting anything out of him, she pushed herself to her feet and turned to leave.

But her footsteps came to a halt before she could reach the door. She turned to look at him, ’’All this while, you have been taking care of me, Your Majesty so I want to tell you that I am grateful for it,’’ Ignoring the sour look on his face, she continued, ’’After I start addressing you as my father, it might not be appropriate for me to thank you over such trifles.’’

’’How many times did I tell you that you do not need to thank me or address me as such? It ruins my day...’’ Rezeph’s annoyed voice came to a halt when he realized something. Did he hear it wrongly? He looked at her in disbelief.

’’Father,’’ Esme curtsied to him as a soft smile made its way to her face.

Rezeph stiffened and stood rooted to his spot as if he was thunderstruck.

As a child, Esme had dreamt of a complete family. She had wanted to have her father and mother too like other children. But those dreams were somehow buried with the passage of time as she grew up.

They said women needed to rely on their father and brother when they were young and then on their husbands after they got married. But Esme never believed in that.

After being betrayed by her uncle, she thought that the only person she trusted with closed eyes was only herself. She knew to get what she wanted, she could only rely on herself.

But eventually, she learnt to trust again and to love again. She believed that even if she fell, someone would have her back.

She felt blessed to have Aleister in her life, a lover who was willing to back her up even if she caused disasters, her brothers, and now, a father as well.

Without them, she was complete but with all these people, she felt fortunate and her heart felt warmth in a way it would never have felt in their absence.

At one point in time, she had been wary of Rezeph’s intentions but she did not realize when she started letting her guard down. Even if the King was a mysterious person, all she felt was his sincerity and care.

She would be lying if she said that she was not moved.

It took Rezeph a long time to recover his senses before he burst out in laughter. He turned around, facing his back towards her so that she was unable to see the unshed tears sparkling in his eyes.

"Is... everything fine?" Esme looked at his back worriedly.

’’It is...’’ It could not have been finer. Rezeph closed his eyes and inhaled a deep breath before he turned to face her, ’’Now that you have agreed to call me father, I can tell you a thing or two.’’

’’Really?’’ Esme’s eyes brightened as she strode towards him, ’’Had I known it comes with benefits, I would have called you father ages ago.’’

’’What a profiteer,’’ Rezeph narrowed his eyes when he saw the cheeky look on her face but an indulgent smile spread on his face, ’’While Aleister’s divine powers resemble golden magic, not everyone’s is identical to it. Hellfire is also a kind of divine power,’’ he explained.

Esme looked at him with a dumbstruck look on her face. He waved his hand, ’’Go now. You only want to call me father for profits.’’

Esme laughed, ’’I am sincere. I called you father before you mentioned profits,’’ as soon as she finished speaking, she fled from the King’s bedchamber when he turned to glare at her.

Once she was gone, Rezeph’s face darkened, ’’Come out now.’’
