Entangled in the Night: Unable to Escape Him-Chapter 33: Investigate Chloe Nash
When Sienna was young, she was knocked to the ground by a big dog, and since then, she developed a strong fear of dogs, even for tiny puppies.
Whenever she saw others walking their dogs downstairs, she always reacted the same way.
For a moment, Silas could not discern who the girl in his arms really was.
He gently patted Chloe’s head as he used to do with Sienna, "Don’t be afraid, it’s okay now."
Hearing this voice and feeling the familiar action, Chloe was suddenly startled awake.
She was Chloe now, she shouldn’t have such a strong reaction.
But a person’s instinctive fear cannot be concealed.
Chloe quickly got off Silas, stepped back a few steps nervously.
"Sorry, I’ll go upstairs first."
After speaking, she hurried upstairs in a panic.
Seeing Chloe’s reaction, Silas couldn’t help frowning.
Why were there so many similarities between Chloe and Sienna?
Both were allergic to pollen, both afraid of puppies.
They both had beautiful eyes shaped like peach blossoms and very similar figures.
Was it that he missed Sienna so madly, or was there an unspoken secret between the two?
Silas leaned against the car, lit a cigarette.
The white smoke blurred his face, the flickering light reflecting in his dark eyes, with a sense of desolation and loneliness.
Just then, the owner of the small dog came over to apologize, "Sorry, did my dog scare your girlfriend? It gets excited when it sees a beauty."
Silas responded indifferently with a "hmm": "She’s afraid of dogs, use a leash next time."
"I thought it’s so late, there wouldn’t be many people downstairs. Which floor does your girlfriend live on? I’ll come to apologize tomorrow."
"801."
Hearing this unit number, the woman frowned in surprise, "Doesn’t their family have a little teddy dog? It often plays with my dog, she shouldn’t be afraid."
Why keep a dog at home when you’re so afraid of them.
Silas felt something wasn’t right.
After a moment’s silence, he said, "She might have been bitten by a dog abroad, so she’s scared."
"Oh, I forgot she just came back from abroad. Are you her boyfriend? Did something happen to her four years ago? I remember her parents went abroad once, and after they returned, they were always crying, even the dog they couldn’t keep and had to leave at a pet store. It’s only gotten a bit better in the last two years."
Silas frowned, "She’s already married, didn’t you know?"
"Really? I’ve never heard her parents mention it, but we’re not very familiar, just walked dogs together sometimes and greeted each other."
In the city, it’s common for neighbors to see each other often but not be very familiar.
Silas didn’t think much of it.
He just wondered what exactly happened to Chloe abroad four years ago that caused her parents so much distress that even the dog had to be fostered.
What could traumatize parents so profoundly, if not a failed relationship, then a separation by death.
Could she have suffered severe injury, or been deceived in love?
Thinking of these possibilities, Silas quickly took out his phone and dialed a number.
"Help me check on Chloe."

Chloe went upstairs, and Mrs. Nash walked over with concern, "Chloe, why are you back so late? Your dad and I were about to go find you, worrying that lunatic detained you."
Seeing how worried they had been lately, Chloe felt guilty.
She hugged Mrs. Nash, "Mom, I’m fine. I’ll be leaving in a few days, and there will be no more contact with him. But I’m worried about leaving you both here."
Mrs. Nash patted her back, "Nothing to worry about—we’re not that old, your dad and I are still in good health. Don’t worry, just go, leaving you here makes me anxious."
Moved by her mother’s concern, Chloe’s eyes welled up.
She had never enjoyed this kind of maternal love before.
Chloe choked up, "Mom, I’m sorry—as I’ve taken Chloe’s identity, I can’t stay with you. But rest assured, once Silas forgets about me in a few years, I’ll return to fulfill my filial duties."
Mrs. Nash gently patted her head, "Silly child, don’t talk nonsense. You’ve extended Chloe’s life, given us hope in living again. How could we blame you? Don’t cry, you should go wash up. It’s almost Tomb-Sweeping Day. Before returning, visit your grandpa and dad. They must miss you greatly."
Chloe nodded, "Okay, I will visit them tomorrow."
Early the next morning, Chloe came downstairs and noticed a small box on the coffee table.
Curious, she walked over, "Mom, what’s in here?"
Wearing an apron, Mrs. Nash came out from the kitchen, "It’s dumplings I made; besides fruits, it’s customary to take dumplings for Tomb-Sweeping. This is the wine you bought; take it along for your dad and grandpa to taste. Buy a bouquet at the cemetery gate; spend some more time there since it’s been years."
Seeing these items, Chloe felt touched, realizing how little she used to understand.
She didn’t even know when to go for tomb visits; Grandpa Prescott was the one who reminded her.
Every time, she’d only bring a bunch of fresh flowers.
Feeling gratified, she hugged Mrs. Nash, "Mom, thank you for making me feel the warmth of a home, and thank you and dad for the parental love. Once everything is settled, I will fulfill my duties well."
Mrs. Nash smiled, "You’ve already been very filial, buying us so many things. Your dad shows off how great his daughter is, making the neighbors envious."
"This is what I should do—Chloe saved my life, I owe it to her."
"Alright, no more words, eat quickly, then head out; traffic might be heavy later."
After breakfast, Chloe headed downstairs with her items. Just at the building entrance, she noticed a tall, well-built figure standing there.
Jett was in a black shirt and gray pants, leaning casually against a car.
His once arrogant face now carried traces of loneliness.
Chloe suddenly recalled, once, the real Chloe had asked her, "Sienna, if you could return to years ago, would you still love Silas?"
Sienna didn’t respond, just looked at her with tearful eyes.
Chloe bitterly smiled, "I knew your answer was yes, so is mine."
She wasn’t someone who liked to verbalize her suffering; Chloe learned about her relationship with Jett through her diary.
She must have loved Jett deeply.
Chloe exhaled softly and carried on walking out.
Seeing her, Jett quickly extinguished his cigarette, stepping forward to her.
Exhaustion laced his voice with hoarseness, "Chloe, I’ve something to say to you."
Chloe looked at him plainly, "Jett, whatever you want to say, our story ended five years ago. I have a family now, please don’t disturb me anymore."
Jett grabbed Chloe’s wrist, his eyes bloodshot.
"Chloe, I regret it. I regret letting you go, believing your absurd breakup reasons. I regret not chasing after you for reconciliation, but letting my pride stop me.
Both of us were wrong. You shouldn’t have thought me so shallow, nor should I have easily believed you were fickle. Chloe, let’s start over."
As Jett spoke, he moved forward to hug her. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Seeing his emotional instability, Chloe quickly stepped back, "Jett, it’s pointless to dwell on blame. I’ve moved on, and I hope you can too."
"What if I say I can’t? Chloe, even if you’re married, you can divorce. I can raise your son."
Chloe couldn’t help her heart clenching.
Fate has truly been kind to her; both as Sienna and Chloe.
Every man she encountered seemed so passionate and intense.
She smiled softly, "Sorry, I love my husband very much, I won’t divorce him. Jett, I have something to do, so I’ll go now."
With that, she left without looking back, directly driving away.
Jett, in anger, hit the car, "Chloe, I won’t give up so easily."
