Evolving Infinitely From An E-Class Hero-Chapter 40: Welcome To Ghost Town
Ghost Town lived up to its name.
The wind howled across the barren outskirts of the abandoned city, raising clouds of ash and dust beneath the glow of the half moon.
The air was dry and heavy, smelling with burnt rubber and metal and something more fouler, something alien.
No lights.
No movements.
Just silence and shadow.
Ghost Town.
Night time gave us the advantage of stealth. But it also made everything feel more tense. Almost uncertain as no one has dared stepped foot into this part of Sector Z for over five years.
Funny how just a few hours ago, people were shouting my name like I’d already won the battle.
"Skateboard Man! Go show ’em!"
"E-Class to the world!"
"You’re making history, bro!"
My neighbors, friends and fellow lower class heroes cheered for me after seeing my face plastered on the TV.
Their cheers echoed in my mind as I stepped off the transport at the edge of Ghost Town, the excitement still buzzing in my heart or core—
Until reality hit.
Trooper, the Ghost Town designated strike team captain walked up to me the moment we touched down.
An A-Class, Rank 21 Hero. The guy looked like a poster boy for heroism.
Polished leather reinforced armor. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
A custom made circular shield and a blade with the same custom design engraved in it.
A custom handgun strapped to his utility belt and his leg straps.
A chin that could probably cut through diamonds.
He gave me one look and smirked.
"You. You’re E-Class right?"
I nodded. "Yes. Skateboard Man reporting for duty. Sir." I replied with a salute.
"Right."
He tossed a bulky duffel bag at my chest. "You’ll be our support. Carry our gear and weapons, stay out of the line of fire and don’t do anything stupid."
He said smugly and ruffled my hair afterwards.
I stared at the bag in my arms like it was a joke.
"Wait, what? I’m here to..."
He cut me off immediately. "You’re here because some nutjob in the ISA felt the need to make the heroes in the E-class feel important. But, let’s be real, it’s a miracle you’re even on this team... Now we don’t just have to kill High Orcs we also have to watch out for your safety too... For fucks sake".
The other heroes didn’t even look surprised, they walked over s tossed their bags at me like I was some bag boy.
At that moment, it felt like a huge burst of energy wanted to blast out from my chest. But, I swallowed my pride.
I didn’t come all this way to start drama. If carrying gear was what it took to get some action against real villains so I could evolve, fine.
My gaze swept across my surroundings until it landed on Dr. Grace Sparks.
She was staring straight at me, looking like she was waiting for me to pull some magic trick out of the pocket of my hoodie.
I could tell she was sent by the ISA to keep tabs on me, they’d probably infuse some kind of surveillance device into her clothing so they’d have a live feed of what’s going on.
I tilted my head, staring back at her.
She walked over and handed a first aid kit to me.
"Be careful with this one, they’re breakables inside..." She said.
"Isn’t it heavy?"
Dr. Grace Sparks asked, to which I simply shook my head.
"No it’s fine."
The large bag I carried on my back was filled to the brim with extra set of clothing, weapons and defensive equipment.
Its volume was quite considerable, but honestly speaking, I didn’t find it heavy at all.
After studying me with her eyes, Dr. Grace turned towards the entrance to Ghost Town.
A giant gate, as big as the ones used in ISA Towers.
’Wait, maybe this one is a little bit bigger". I thought.
Just like before when I was standing in front of Gravehowl, a certain ill omen was daunting on me.
"I hope this goes well..."
Trooper yelled out an order. "Ghost Town Elite Strike Team! Let’s go!"
Everyone followed his lead and entered the dark town.
"..."
I stepped inside.
The interior was rather plain, still looked alot like the outskirts but didn’t feel like it.
I realized I tensed up after feeling that, but I let it out with a sigh of relief after seeing the long, dark road that led to the High Orcs space ship.
"So we just have to get there... I’m sure the Sherman would be located there... " I muttered.
The thing about this raid is, though the members of the strike team were pretty high up in the ranks, this particular mission had no threat level— I harboured the idea of this mission being tougher than the ISA led on, seeing as they didn’t take this action a long time ago.
2 A-Class and 3 B-Class, with one E-Class.
If it weren’t the Guilds who didn’t allow their heroes to attend such event, it would have been more.
I smirked softly.
"I’m not here as part of the strike team, I’m here cause the ISA want to see what I can do if given the chance. Let’s not sweat over stuff like this..."
"There’s no need to sure them my abilities, that would only make them more scared of me and probably revoke my license and try hunting me down to experiment on me— see how my body works with this power..."
"That means I’m here just to have fun and evolve with a new test, who knows the High Orcs might be a formidable band since they haven’t been taken care of up until now..."
When I put my mindset into the spectrum, it felt as if weight was lifted off my shoulders.
"Let’s move on!"
Trooper ordered.
Dr. Grace Sparks walked behind me the whole time as we slowly advanced forward. That confirms my suspicion that she was tagging me.
Was it her glasses?.
"Since we crossed the gate, I’m 100% sure they know we’re coming..." Trooper said.
Almost immediately, as if they read his mind, the heroes of the strike team got init their battle formation.
I was impressed, it happened within the blink of an eye.
’So this is how the high ranked heroes raid, huh... ’
They were definitely on a higher level than the reckless lower class heroes I was used to until now. Heck, fire and bright lights were already emanating from their bodies.
’Looks like I probably wouldn’t get a chance to do anything here... They all look competent.’
On one side of the coin, I felt reassured. On the other, I felt rueful as well.
Whoooooshhhh.
A wave of killing intent hit us like an ocean wave.
The Orcs finally showed themselves into the moonlit streets of the Ghost Town.
