Chapter 44: Gone Down

I could feel goosebumps sprouting up on my skin. Not from fear— but excitement, anticipation, inquiry.

From beyond the darkness of the long road, countless sounds of footsteps, far greater than the first two times, reverberating loudly.

The entire vesinity fell into dead silence, and I took the opportunity to begin counting the numbers of the enemies via the sound of their footsteps.

Step, step.

Thud, thud.

Thanks to my high perception, I could separate out each of the footsteps to their original owners.

"... 48, 49, 50, 51."

There were a total of 51 different footsteps.

I took a look around me.

"..."

The nervous tension was palpable from the clearly writ large on the faces of the heroes. It seemed to me that they also had more or less figured out the size of the enemies numbers from the sound of their footsteps.

We barely managed to hold our own against 32 High Orcs without my ’special’ intervention. But now, 52 of them were coming. That was twice as many and I knew for SURE we stood no chance.

’... There’s no hope of a victory here. ’

I was sure the rest of the strike team members were thinking the same thing.

Thump, thump, thump, thump.

My heartbeat that had been beating calmly had now begin to pound harder.

’Show yourselves...’

I silently observed the front as I furrowed my eyebrows deeply.

Eventually they aliens revealed themselves. The countless matching High Orcs came to a halt just a little bit of a distance from where we stood.

’What... Why did they come so close?’

"Grrrrrrrr!"..

They growled as if they’d tried pronouncing something we could hear. No words could adequately describe the bloodthirsty killing intent emitting from the numerous size of the High Orcs aliens.

The result of this battle was obvious to both sides even without actually fighting eachother.

"#$$&##&#&#&&#-#-#&&#&#&#"

The High Orc at the forfront of the match blurted out.

"Did- did it just try to talk..."

Trooper scratched the back side of his head.

"I let didn’t try to talk... It talked!" I said with warning even to myself.

Somehow, the Forever Core was able to translate what the High Orc said and made it audible so I could hear and visibly popping up as a notification within my view.

Everyone glanced at me and back at the High Orc.

"Really, what did it say then?"

*Gulp.

I swallowed hard.

"They said, we cannot leave; they would like to make an example of us to the rest of the humans..."

"That’s why they came in such an overwhelming number, so we couldn’t take them down... My best guess is, the first assault was just to see our battle peak".

Trooper’s lips were shut tight in a straight line.

"God damn it... Since when did you speak High Orc E-Class nobody..." He scoffed.

He rubbed his temples and let out a huge sigh.

"Tch... I asked if an S-Class could join us on this mission but the ISA refused! They said we have everything we needed. I’m sure that new S-Class hero Shadow girl would be of massive help here".

His expression crumbled unsightly.

He had a very good point, S-Class heroes possessed incredible powers that could overturn any unfavorable situation like this one into our favor.

"Fighting here would definitely result in our death comrades..." He said, waving his left hand in the air.

"We’re giving up?" Tank asked.

"Yes, Tank. We are giving up. Even if we try running away, we would still get caught!"

"I guess we’ll just do what they want and hope the ISA send a back up strike team B, if we take too long to return".

Trooper dunked his head and fell silent.

Then suddenly he drew his sword and clanged it against his shield.

With a battle stance and a gritted teeth, he yelled...

"Over my dead body will I surrender to some alien species trying to overthrow my mother land!".

"The patriotic shall stand before injustice. I am the patriotic!"

’Ohhhh, Amazing’

He resolved within himself to meet his maker, Trooper wasn’t going down without a fight!

"Stand with me comrades as we defend our motherland!"

The other heroes nodded their heads as if they had been waiting for his signal.

He then brought his shield right up till his chin and glared at the aliens, still not showing my signs of movement — yet.

’Thats a real hero, right there. It’s dumb and illogical — but heroic.’

Just when I felt like the High Orcs were going to move into a battle stance, they did something else that I never imagined.

Thud, thud, thud, thud.

Step, step.

Step, step.

Gulp.

The High Orcs separated into groups of two, in a long line creating a tiny isle big enough if us to move through.

They were inviting us to the space ship!.

This was about to get way more interesting than it already was. Right when I thought I wasn’t going to get any action.

’... Good, Very good...’

A thin smile of anticipation spread on my lips.

Then one of the High Orcs stepped forward.

It emerged from the group, it wild beast like eyes looking at the direction of Trooper who was at the forefront of our team.

"¥£¥¥¢π€π÷€×€××¢§¢§¢§€§€§€§§¢§¢§§¢§€÷€÷..."

This specific High Orc possessed a far bigger physique than the others, and its fangs were noticeably longer as well.

"I suppose you’re the leader?" Trooper said confidently, looking up at the hulking beast.

If he made any sudden moves, the High Orcs was capable of chopping of his head with one successful swing of his weapon.

I could tell from his body tense. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Suddenly, I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I turned my head to reveal Dr. Grace Sparks starring at me.

"What did the High Orc say..." She said, fear etched in her voice.

I narrowed my eyes to a slit. I’m sure by now, she would have been regretting her decision to accompany us in this mission and the people at the ISA watching from her feed were having the show of their lives.

I grimaced.

"They want to move us to a second location..."

"Where?"

"There..."

I pointed directly to the space ship that stood above the horizon.

The heroes gasped and began freaking out as if they were stabbed at different sides of their body.

The High Orcs wished to intentionally invite us to their home base, to make an example of us.

I don’t think something if this soughts has ever happened since the High Orcs made a appearance on earth.

Facing this surprising and unprecedented change of events, Trooper and every other person in the Strike Team fell into a state of pure confusion.

"Trooper, I’m quite sure this is going to be the last time we’ll see the moon if we follow them". Firebrand said with a chest swollen with fear.

"Same thing happens if we decide to stand our ground here and now..." Trooper said from behind his shield.

The silence fell again.

"¢¥¥¢¥¢π÷×!!!"

I narrowed my eyes to a slit immediately the High Orc made another statement.

"It says, Sherman of The High Orcs wants to see us..." I blurted out without hesitation.

At this point, I didn’t even care what they thought about me being able to understand the language of the High Orcs, I just really wanted to get some action.

Sherman of The High Orcs is said to be the supreme leader of their species since they landed on our planet, Earth. No one had seen or knows what he looks like, all we knew was the name.

Trooper released his fighting stance and sheathed his sword into its case strapped to his back. He turned his head slightly so that we that were behind him could see just the corner of his lips and the bridge of his nose.

"If we are going to die, I suggest we at least know that this Sherman has to say..." He said.

"Let’s get going then... "

He said with a deep voice and took the first step through the rows of hulking High Orcs, and then everyone else began to follow after him one after the other.

Usually when you are in some kind of trouble with a third party and they transport you to a new location, the odds of surviving becomes next to zero.

I don’t know why Trooper suddenly decided to change his mind about dying honourably, maybe he thinks he can try to negotiate with the boss in other to get out of there alive.

The odds of succeeding in that would be extremely low.
