Chapter 116: Emergency?

The warm morning sunlight poured through the expansive glass panes of the Academy’s cafeteria, casting soft golden hues across the floors and elegant interior.

Brandon and Dhayun are sitting in a quiet corner of the café lounge, a place typically reserved for upper-ranked students or those with special permission.

It was a subtle privilege granted to him... being the Academy’s only male etheric awakener came with its perks, after all.

Across from him, Dhayun sipped her tea from a tall porcelain cup.

The coffee she’d chosen was not just any coffee; it was an expensive one, ordered from the premium selection menu that only a handful of students dared to tap into.

With her legs casually crossed and one arm draped along the backrest of the chair, Dhayun took another long, indulgent sip.

"Mmm... perfect balance. Full-bodied flavor. Hints of dark chocolate and nutmeg," she muttered under her breath.

Her expression melted into a blissful smile as she slowly opened her eyes and glanced at him. "Ah... this is the taste of justice. You paying for my massage."

Brandon, on the other hand, had his attention fixed on his phone, thumbs idly tapping across the screen.

He didn’t look up from his screen as he replied with a distracted hum, "Yeah, yeah... enjoy it while it lasts. That cup probably costs more than you."

Dhayun looked at him blankly and continued sipping her coffee.

Brandon was reading the glowing text box on his screen with a smile on his face.

Florence: You’re free this weekend, yes? I’d like you to stop by the estate again. Come alone; don’t bring her with you.

Brandon: Seems like you love me more than your daughter.

Florence: Well, I have loved my daughter for all these years and it’s time to love my son.

Across the table, Dhayun narrowed her eyes slightly, looking at him smiling.

She leaned forward, tapping her polished nails against her coffee cup. "You texting your girlfriend?"

"Nope," Brandon replied absentmindedly, "Her mother."

Dhayun blinked in surprise "Her mother? The matriarch of House Bleaufort?"

Brandon glanced up from his phone briefly, "Yeah. Florence. We chat sometimes."

"Chat," she repeated flatly. "You ’chat’ with the mother of one of the Five Great Houses. And I’m supposed to believe that’s normal."

Brandon shrugged, setting the phone down "It’s not that weird. She’s pretty chill."

Dhayun stared at him, then slowly leaned back into her seat, processing that. "So, now you’re dating the heiress of a Great House, you’re on casual texting terms with her mother, and you’ve managed to survive all of this without getting ether-blasted into the stratosphere?"

"Sounds about right," Brandon replied with a casual nod.

Dhayun took another sip of her coffee. "Unbelievable. A few years ago, you were getting your head stuck between stair railings and losing bets to me."

Brandon gave her a cheeky smile "Character development."

She set her cup down and folded her arms. "It’s not development. It’s a damn transformation arc. You skipped a few Chapters."

Brandon just chuckled upon hearing this and replied "Are you still watching those animes?"

"Duh." She replied casually "I even have Blu-ray prints of that anime we used to watch before."

Hm? Brandon was surprised to hear this "Wait, seriously? You still kept those Blu-ray prints?"

Dhayun gave him a smug little grin and nodded proudly "Yep. Every episode. In pristine condition. No scratches, no damage. I even organized them by arc and special editions."

A nostalgic warmth washed over him as he leaned back in his chair "Man... it’s been forever since we watched those together. The last time was, what... back in middle school? You got mad at me for falling asleep during the finale."

Hearing this, Dhayun’s lips twitched in frustration "Because it was emotional, damn it! You missed the protagonist sacrificing herself! I cried for two hours."

Brandon laughed as he remembered her face "Yeah, yeah... I remember waking up to your sobbing. I thought you were choking on popcorn."

She snorted at that, hiding her smile behind her cup as she took another sip "You’re lucky I didn’t choke you instead."

Shaking his head fondly, he leaned forward a little, resting his elbow on the table "So... you think I could borrow those discs sometime? I kinda wanna rewatch that last arc."

She tilted her head, giving him a look "Nah. Not lending them to you."

Brandon blinked in surprise as he thought she would accept it "Huh? Why not?"

Taking another sip, she shrugged casually "If you really wanna watch it, you’re gonna have to come to my dorm. We can watch it together. Just like old times."

"You sure?" he asked, his tone softening. "Don’t want your roommates getting the wrong idea."

Dhayun rolled her eyes "Please. My dorm’s single-occupancy. No one’s gonna walk in on us... unless you start screaming during the emotional scenes again."

Brandon let out a dry chuckle "I did not scream. I just got a little too invested."

"Right. You literally shouted, ’NO, NOT HER!’ when the side character died. My ears were ringing."

"Well, to be fair, she was the best girl."

She nodded her head as she took another sip of her coffe "Mhm. I agree..."

At this time, Brandon got another notification on his mobile and he looked at the message from Calista.

Hm? He opened the message, ’Is there something happening in Church.’

In the message, there is only one word ’Emergency.’

Seeing this, Brandon’s gaze squinted in thought ’I told them to contact me only if there is something serious.’

He let out a sigh and Dhayun looked at him "What happened?"

With a shake of his head, he replied "Nothing. Just some academy group message spam. You know how it is."

"Oh, yeah..."

Later, after she finished the coffee, they stood up and left the café.

When they reached the branching paths near the central hall, Dhayun glanced over at him. "Class time. Don’t get in trouble, yeah?"

"Alright..."

He left the Academy through the north side exit and made his way down the tree-lined street that connected it to the residential district.

As he walked, the morning sun filtered through tall white pines, casting gentle patterns of shadow across the pavement.

Taking out his mobile, he called Ravene.

Ravene also quickly picked up the call "Kael?"

"Aunt Rave, I am going to the Church for a while. So I am taking your car."

Hearing this, Ravene’s gaze squinted as she asked in a serious tone "Kael, do I need to come with you?"

Brandon shook his head "No, don’t worry. I called someone for my protection."

A soft sigh escaped Ravene’s lips "I see. Be careful and if something happens, call me immediately. I will be there as soon as I can."

"Mhm."
