Chapter 117: The Emergency

After an hour of silent travel through winding roads and secure routes leading away from the Academy District, Brandon turned off the main highway and entered the restricted zone just outside the capital’s outer ring.

A massive security gate loomed ahead... an entrance reserved only for top-tier ecclesiastical officials or those with explicit clearance.

Brandon rolled down his window as he approached the gate.

The reinforced gates opened and Brandon steadily drove his car through the driveway.

Brandon pulled into the designated private hangar bay.

He turned off the engine and stepped out of the car, stretching his arms above his head.

Dozens of Church officials, stationed near the aircraft or walking nearby, turned to look in his direction.

Then, in unison, they bowed.

Brandon stretched his back a little and began walking toward the aircraft.

At this time, he saw Callista taking a step forward.

She bowed deeply at the waist as he walked closer to the aircraft. "Lord Herald. Thank you for responding so quickly."

Brandon gave a nod and she gestured toward the entrance of the aircraft "Let’s move then."

She turned and led him toward the sleek white-and-gold ethercraft parked nearby.

It bore the emblem of the Church of Rhéanne across its wings, a silver sword wreathed in holy flame.

As the doors opened with a low hiss, two attendants bowed to Brandon as he entered.

The doors closed and Brandon soon took his seat.

Within seconds, the engine activated, and the aircraft gently lifted from the ground in a smooth arc, silently rising into the clouds above.

Brandon leaned back into the cushioned seat as he glanced out the window.

After a moment, he turned to look at Callista who was standing beside him.

He patted the space beside him and muttered "Sit here."

Callista obeyed him and sat very close to him, her shoulders brushing against his "Lord Herald..."

With a soft nod, he asked, "So, what’s the problem?"

Callista’s eyes flickered in irritation "It’s that... some people were protesting that a man become the Herald of the Church of Rheanne... and that turned into a huge rally."

Brandon leaned his head against the headrest and closed his eyes briefly. "I figured this would happen eventually."

She lowered her gaze as she looked at him in reverence "I know it’s not a big issue... another part of the reason I called you is because I missed you and wanted to see you again."

"I hope you didn’t forget my marriage proposal."

Hearing this, Brandon remembered Charlotte’s words ’She is a divine dog, she sucks up to you only because you are a Herald...’

With a smile, he raised his hand and patted her head.

She stiffened for a second but then she sheepishly smiled and leaned into his touch.

"Your touch... is divine..."

She looked up at him as her eyes turned cold "Lord Herald, should we just kill people who are protesting against you?"

Eh? Brandon just smiled wryly and she tilted her head "Should we just execute a few key dissenters? Publicly, perhaps. A demonstration to reaffirm that divine authority is not to be questioned."

"As the Herald, you have the authority. It would be swift. The fear would restore order. It’s what many within the inner circle are quietly suggesting."

Hearing this, Brandon shook his head "No, let’s not take any rash decisions on this matter."

"We’re not killing anyone. Not unless they try to kill me first. Let them speak. They’re afraid. That doesn’t mean they deserve to die."

As he retracted his hand, Callista gently grasped his hand and brought her lips down, kissing the top of his palm.

With a smile, Brandon retracted his hand and gently began to remove his blazer.

Callista offered to help "Here, let me take care of it."

She gently removed his blazer and folded it in her hand before placing it on her lap.

Brandon closed his eyes for a moment ’We haven’t even publicly announced the whole situation yet.’

’The people in the baptism centre that day must have spread inside the church and the city of Rheanne and there are already protests.’

’I wonder what will happen if its publicly announced.’

"Haa..."

Callista who was sitting near him, muttered "I think it might be people from the Five Great families, they loathe men..."

"They must have created a spark within the Church and created this chaos."

Upon hearing this, Brandon gave a nod "Might be..."

---

Brandon and Callista were walking through the halls of the Church of Rheanne.

Callista who was walking behind him, spoke: "Supreme Pontiff and others are waiting for your arrival."

"There has been unrest ever since the news of your presence reached the lower sanctums. Whispers spread quickly... and not all of them are reverent."

Her gaze narrowed as she continued "The Baptismal Witnesses. Most have remained loyal and silent, but a few... were not ready to accept what they saw."

"A group of people tried to storm the inner sanctum yesterday. The Temple Guard dispersed them with minimal force, but the discontent is rising."

"There are murmurs from some of the lesser clergy that the Church is being ’corrupted from within.’ That your presence will bring downfall for the divine order."

Hearing all of this, Brandon just stayed silent.

They quickly entered the Chamber of Divinity.

Eleonore, Valiene and the Triarchs, who were seated around the table, quickly stood up, bowing their heads.

Brandon gave a faint nod and took his seat in the front.

Eleonore looked at Brandon and spoke "Lord Herald, I hope you already know why you were summoned here."

"We need to make a decision on how to address the unrest."

"Whether to formally announce your title to the world—or suppress it until the Church can prepare a proper response."

She gestured to the three women sitting across from her "Some of the Triarchs favor concealment. They fear civil unrest if you’re revealed too soon."

"And what do you favor?" he asked, looking at Eleonore curiously.

Callista replied for this "Truth, even if the world is not ready for it. You are the Herald. You are the will of the Divine incarnate."

"The people must learn to accept that... or fall away as non-believers."

Brandon frowned slightly, sensing the fervor in her words "That sounds dangerously close to zealotry."

Callista gave a small smile "Perhaps. But Goddess Rhéanne does not choose lightly. And you were chosen."

"Whatever you choose, Lord Herald, I will support it. And I will protect you. Even if the whole Church turns against you."

As she spoke, her gaze flickered to the remaining people on the table.

With a sigh, Eleonore spoke "Some are even claiming that the Baptism was faked."

Valiene shook her head "How could it be fake? I was there during baptism and even many people were inside there. I don’t know why they are spreading these rumors."

Callista let out a helpless sigh "We should just kill these people who riot. What they are doing is against the will of the Goddess. So they deserve to get executed."

"If we kill some people, the others will gradually shut down in fear."

Eleonore glanced at her "Violence is not always the answer. They will say that they are trying to suppress the voices of people by causing fear."

"I guess the only way is for our Herald to address the people by himself."

Hearing the suggestion, the hall went silent for a minute.

Brandon sitting on the chair, lowered his head in thought "I will... think about it."

But then he got a small idea and muttered "Do you have prison or torture chambers in the church?"

---

Huh?

Standing outside the door of the classroom, Eira looked at the hallway in confusion ’Where did he go?’

She looked down at the screen on her mobile ’And he is also not picking up his calls... where did he go?’ freēnovelkiss.com

She pressed the call icon again and brought the phone to her ear, her heart ticking faster in her chest.

Ring.Ring.Ring.

Nothing.

It went straight to voicemail.

She tried texting again.

"Where did you go? I am waiting outside. Are you okay?"

Sent. No read receipt.

Calistra walked to her and asked in a concerned tone "What happened? Is he not here yet?"

Turning to her, Eira let out a deep sigh "Today morning, he told me that we could meet up in the Academy, but now he is missing..."

Her eyes lowered as a sense of fear crept into her heart ’Did something happened to him?’

As she tucked her phone away with a troubled sigh, it suddenly vibrated in her palm.

Eira blinked, looking at the incoming call from an unknown number.

Hm?

Thinking that it might be Brandon in an emergency, she hurriedly picked it up and brought it to her ear "Brandon?"

"Uh, I am not Brandon..."

Hearing a woman’s voice, Eira was confused.

"I am Ravene, Brandon’s Aunt.."

"Oh.. Y-Yes, Aunt... Brandon, do you know where Brandon is? he hasn’t come to the class yet."

With a nod, Ravene replied "Oh, I know... Let’s talk about this privately. Come to the academy cafeteria, top floor."

Privately? Eira’s eyes trembled in dread "What happened? Is it something serious? Is he okay?"

Letting out a chuckle, Ravene replied in a casual tone "Oh, don’t worry... just some confidential matters."
