Chapter 40: Heavenfree

Zold frowned deeply. But after a brief moment, his expression relaxed.

"Did he attempt to kill the World Elephant?"

"Yes." Maria nodded solemnly. "He might’ve succeeded if not for Morgana intercepting him on the continent."

She paused, then continued with a low tone. "I didn’t expect him to be so audacious. Maybe I really should cut him down."

Her words were cold and ruthless, completely unlike her usual demeanor.

The World Elephant was the sole Tier I Demon-class monster on the entire planet right now, outside of those in the ocean.

Without knowing anything, it might not mean much.

But to the fifteen of them, a Tier I Demon-class monster held a completely different meaning in the First Era Ending Calamity.

Era Ending Calamities could end in two ways: either wait until the time the Apostles reappear, or fulfill a hidden condition to end the calamity prematurely.

For the First Era Ending Calamity, the hidden condition was to kill a Tier I Demon-class monster.

If somebody killed the World Elephant during this time, then the Second Era Ending Calamity would descend immediately!

The Global Summit’s purpose was to prevent this from happening.

To be precise, Morgana and the others didn’t want to thrust the world into another disaster.

The world was still adapting to the First Era Ending Calamity. If Beyond had succeeded in Afrasia, the situation that the other regressors had stabilized would immediately descend into chaos.

"The hidden condition’s reward is too great. Even I’m tempted." Zold’s eyes sharpened. He shook his head. "It seems this Global Summit isn’t going to be peaceful in the slightest."

Maria nodded, then calmly continued. "Morgana told me that she fought Beyond."

Zold wasn’t surprised.

He guessed. "She lost."

"It was just a slight disadvantage," Maria said, recalling her conversation with Morgana. "But that was enough to decide everything."

"Beyond’s awakened talent is special. It’s normal for her to lose in a fight," Zold shook his head. "The Queen of Fantasy’s talent is also unique, but it can only show its full capabilities at a later time."

He paused, then continued with a curious tone.

"... But it seems the Queen of Fantasy has really changed her ways. The Second Era Ending Calamity should be the most beneficial for her, considering her talent."

"That’s right." Maria nodded. Although fifteen of them didn’t know the exact details of each person’s talent, they knew enough details to form a guess.

Zold suddenly remembered something, his brows furrowing. "But don’t the Silver Witch and Celestial Priest live in Euryon? Why didn’t the Queen invite them?"

"Morgana was afraid that it would break the team further," Maria answered. "It’s one thing if Morgana fought Beyond alone, but if she brought the other members with her... the meaning changes entirely."

"From a personal conflict to a group conflict," Zold realized. "If others knew that Morgana and the others would gang up to hunt down a member, the team would lose all of its credibility and trust."

"Indeed." Maria pursed her lips. "It’s not easy for Morgana..."

Zold nodded slightly.

Being the Queen of a nation was definitely a heavy responsibility.

Among them, she was the best when it came to managing and leading people. Even he had to concede on this.

Every member of their team had their own specialty, some aspects even Zold couldn’t replicate.

If they could fully trust one another, Zold was certain they could get past at least 40 Era Ending Calamities without a hitch.

But the fact this Global Summit was even happening in the first place proved that the chances were incredibly low.

"Who do you think is the strongest in the group?" Maria asked casually.

"Hard to say." Zold shook his head. "Everyone has their own trump cards. Even if the Queen had lost her fight with Beyond, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s weaker... perhaps she’s just more patient."

Maria was surprised. She nodded slightly. "I didn’t consider this. Perhaps Morgana informing us of her loss was a way of probing us for our intentions."

"That’s right." Zold mused. "Although no one is going to fall for that. It’s typical of the Queen. She’s the type to lose the battle to win the war. Her actions always consider the distant future."

"I saw your research about the Expression Paths," Maria suddenly chuckled, changing the topic. "Aren’t you afraid the Ubermensch will sue you for plagiarism?"

Zold suddenly fell silent.

After a brief pause, he asked. "Do you know the Übermensch’s talent?"

"Huh?" Maria was confused. She hesitated for a moment before answering. "Isn’t it a hybrid between strength-type and intelligence-type talent?"

"That’s right."

Zold nodded, looking beyond the mirror.

But if that was all, then he wouldn’t be the Übermensch.

"He wouldn’t get angry. If anything, he’ll probably even thank me. He knows I’m doing this for him and for humanity."

Hearing that, Maria was confused and thought he was just joking. But his indifferent expression made it hard to discern.

Maria couldn’t help but lower her head and ask awkwardly.

"... Was that a joke?"

Zold turned his eyes to her quietly.

She didn’t know why, but she felt like she was being thoroughly judged.

As Maria felt increasingly embarrassed and ashamed by the weight of his gaze, Zold didn’t answer her at all, making her regret asking even more.

’... So it wasn’t a joke?’

Maria thought, but then she immediately knocked her head.

’It’s that skill’s fault...’

She sighed, unable to help but glance at Zold.

But when she saw that Zold was still staring at her, she couldn’t help but feel her heart skip a beat, biting her lips as she averted her eyes.

"It’s okay."

Maria suddenly murmured, keeping her composure. She can’t think that way, for her sake, and for his sake.

While the two of them were in an awkward silence, the pilot announced the plane’s ascent.

Slowly, the plane began rising up in the air.

Heavenfree, Euryon.

The Global Summit was hosted on an island off the coast of the continent of Euryon, a historical place known as Heavenfree.

In ancient times, Heavenfree was the place where the Kings and Queens of Euryon gathered to discuss important matters.

For hundreds of years, the island remained sealed, with only the ruler of Crownreach being allowed entry.

Now, the current Queen had finally lifted that ancient seal, inviting leaders across the globe to gather.

This wasn’t merely a historic moment.

It was the dawn of a new era.

Woosh!

Slowly, a plane with the mark of Lunaria’s flag descended on the ground.

From the lined-up airplanes, it was evident that Lunaria wasn’t the first to arrive, but they also weren’t the last.

"Respected leaders, welcome to Heavenfree!"

Upon arrival, Crownreach’s staff led them inside the meeting place, the largest building on the island.

The Global Summit would only start at 11:00 AM, but it was only 9:00 AM.

There were still two hours before the meeting started, hence most leaders gathered inside the headquarters.

General Volks and the others saw other leaders from different nations and came forward to socialize.

Meanwhile, Zold was standing at the entrance with a thoughtful expression.

Suddenly, he felt a gaze land on him.

He raised his eyes and looked at the upper floor, staring directly at a tall white man.

The tall white man stared at him, smiling slightly, exuding arrogance.

Something unspoken seemed to have occurred between their gaze.

A moment later, Zold turned around and walked outside the headquarters.

Surprised, Maria was about to follow Zold, but a young woman suddenly came to her and bowed respectfully.

"Ms. Auburn?" The young woman asked politely.

Maria turned to her gaze and immediately recognized the woman. She nodded slightly, guessing the young woman’s intentions.

"Is Morgana calling for me?"

The young woman paused for a moment, not expecting her to call the Queen by her name. She nodded and spoke politely. "Yes, Ms. Auburn. She said she wanted to discuss something with you."

Maria glanced at Zold, but Zold simply waved his hands and walked away.

"Go."

Maria was silent for a moment before speaking.

"Okay. Lead the way."

Although the woman sensed something amiss, she didn’t think too much about it and left with Maria.

While Zold was sitting on a bench outside the headquarters, a tall man suddenly approached him.

"May I take this seat?"

The tall man asked, but even before receiving an answer, he had already sat down beside Zold.

Zold didn’t bother opening his eyes to know who the man was.

It was the same person that he saw in the headquarters.

"You shouldn’t have done that."

Zold suddenly said, leaning against the bench.

"What do you mean?" The man smiled, spreading his arms on the bench. "I just went sightseeing on the safari. But Morgana overreacted. It’s cruel how little trust she has in me."

Zold replied. "I wasn’t talking about that."

"Huh?" The man was stunned. He asked curiously. "Then, what?"

"You should’ve waited for my answer," Zold said slowly. "Before you took a seat, Reegan."

He opened his eyes, glancing at the man, then asked casually.

"Or did the regression make you forget your place?"

The current recognized strongest person in the world—

Michael Reegan, also known as Beyond, fell silent.
