Chapter 39: First Kiss

Luellen finally found an exit. She quickly retreated into the hallway outside the banquet hall. A heaved sigh came out of her lips as she took in a deep breath and fresh air. Her silver gown continued to glow even if her energy was running out.

"System, can’t you direct me to Mr Leander? I want to see him again..." Luellen whispered as she rubbed her arm. It was easy to miss the man’s warm body.

Wait, it was only his arm around her shoulders.

Luellen shook her head and patted her red cheeks. She shouldn’t be caught daydreaming on her own in this place. She should at least have someone around to slap her awake.

"Oh, my God... is he drowning?"

A stray voice came from the side. Luellen passed by a couple speaking alone behind a pillar. The woman even jumped again and screamed, "Someone, call for help!"

Luellen ran to the railing and looked out at the poolside. She caught Shirley’s figure grasping her hair in agony. A figure also struggled in the water, but a long purple cloth covered the person’s face. Glimpses of white came from the purple cloth, as if it were also struggling alongside the figure underneath.

A sting came to Luellen’s heart. Her blood ran cold, and her brain revolved so quickly. Luellen didn’t think before pulling her skirt up and jumping over the railing. She crashed into the bushes, only to rush out to the poolside.

"Mr Beckett!" Luellen screamed as she jumped into the water. Her gown weighed her down, but she was not newly operated on. Neither was she a dog who couldn’t swim in such a fancy gown.

"Luellen!" Shirley screamed just the same. She caught a glimpse of the silver gown. Luellen’s voice also woke her up from her panic.

The successive screams slowly traveled inside the banquet hall. Those on the second floor were the first ones to watch in horror. When the people started running around, the rest of the guests grew apprehensive.

Leander only listened to Gala and Madam Henny when he noticed the commotion. He was about to ask Houston when Ms Curtis ran to him.

She even ended up grabbing Leander’s arm. Ms Curtis screamed, "Mr Wentworth! Your brother’s drowning in the pool! Luellen jumped in to save him!"

"Luellen!" Leander slipped away and barreled through the crowd.

...

Luellen kicked her shoes off in the water. She took Sydney first and pulled her to the poolside. The buttons on the teacup’s dress flew as Luellen ripped the gown off the dog. She huffed. "Sydney, don’t cry! I’ll get Daddy, okay?"

Bark! Sydney trembled from the cold. However, Luellen could only leave and grab Beckett. He had sunk by the time Luellen took Sydney.

One big breath! Luellen took one breath and dove. She wrapped her arm under Beckett’s arms to pull him up from the water. The man just survived a car accident with abdominal wounds. The shock from seeing his dog drown must have knocked him out, along with the assault of the water on his body. When blood spread into the water, Luellen already knew that his wounds had reopened.

"Call for help!" Luellen broke through the surface and pulled Beckett to the poolside. She pushed him to the edge and got to his side. She screamed at Shirley again, "Call for help! Shirley, NOW!"

Useless! Luellen didn’t want to curse the woman at this time. She could only look over Beckett, not knowing what to do.

[Unlocking (Medical Knowledge 1) requires you to unlock five lower-tiered skills! Would you like to spend 47 Proficiency Points?]

Luellen’s intuitive system offered a solution. The Proficiency Skill was expensive, but who cared? Luellen surely didn’t. She could just earn them back if she did things correctly.

She checked Beckett’s airway and felt his chest. Her heart sank at the unresponsive body.

’I have to breathe into him before doing compressions...’

[Gifting (First Kiss) to a non-Love Interest will result in unfavorable moments with Love Interests! Deliberate carefully!]

The prompt made Luellen’s blood run cold. She then screamed in anger, "Fuck my first kiss! I’m not letting him die!"

However, she could only divert her frustration into strength. Luellen started chest compressions. She screamed again, "Mr Beckett! You’re not allowed to die! Sydney and Mr Leander will get very, very sad!"

Blood soon stained Beckett’s clothes. His wound reacted to the pressure, discharging blood at every hard action. Luellen glanced at the growing blot, but it was more important that Beckett breathed. It even felt like blood seeped and squelched underneath her palms.

Luellen stopped the compression for a second and breathed into Beckett’s mouth again. She kept up with the compressions and resuscitation for a few more seconds... until Beckett choked blood at Luellen’s face.

"Mr Beckett!" Luellen gasped and helped Beckett turn to the side. He started choking on water and blood, his hand gripping his reopened wound. After all, every time he expelled water, his body rattled in pain.

"...Luellen?" Beckett turned to the maiden. He noticed the blood on her face before smiling a little. "Did I do that? Did I hit your face?"

"This is negligible." Luellen sighed and used her poor shawl to clean her face. That was the only time she realized her silver gown was now soaked in pool water and diluted blood. She just shook her head and thought of it later.

Footsteps finally got to them. Houston was on the phone, Madam Henny picked up Sydney, and Gala pulled Shirley away.

Leander walked closer slowly and fell to his knees beside them. He then sat on his legs and gripped Beckett’s shoulder. His voice was so soft. "Are you... okay? What are you doing here? Why aren’t you inside where I can watch over you?"

"Andy, I’d rather confess later..." Beckett chuckled, but he curled up at the growing pain. "My stomach felt like it burst this time..."

"Mr Leander, let’s take him to the hospital..." Luellen said so, but she caught the sound of an ambulance. She smiled. "Mr Leander, the ambulance is here. Don’t worry, he’ll be fine. Mr Beckett is strong. He won’t leave you alone. Please don’t cry. We’re not too late..."

Leander turned to Luellen and nodded once. He didn’t get up, however. He removed his jacket and tried to warm Beckett with it.

They waited for the EMTs to come and assess Beckett’s injuries. Luellen brought Leander to his feet as she answered the EMT’s questions. The CEO inevitably rode the ambulance with his brother. Houston got in his car to follow the ambulance in case Leander needed someone to run errands.

The maiden stood outside the venue in a soaked, bloodied gown and bare feet. Luellen only watched the lights and sounds die down.

"Luellen... I’ll look for a vet." Madam Henny grabbed her arm to wake her up from her trance. "We should also go to the hospital. You don’t look okay."

"I’m fine, Madam. Let’s find a vet for Sydney first. Let’s deal with other things later." Luellen nodded before stopping in her tracks. She turned around, seeing the people watching them. Within the crowd, she spotted Shirley and Gala.

The maiden stared right in that other intern’s eyes before saying, "I’ll deal with the less important details later."
