Chapter 186: The Dinner Invite!

Lady Mirielle waited for an answer from Evan but Evan didn’t answer immediately. He walked to the couch and sank into it and she followed him like a lost puppy.

"You have to tell me, My lord. Who is the person that our son has marked?" She asked.

Evan secretly stared at her and grinned.

’Our son? Does she really think she’ll be my duchess?’

"He’s very popular among the nobles even if he’s not a noble himself."

"You would have to give me a name for me to know who he is," she said almost raising her voice. She couldn’t believe that Lucien had marked someone else when she had been planning to make Seraphina marry Lucien.

When Seraphina even confessed that she had feelings for Lucien, she was excited. She just wanted to be the top woman in the kingdom apart from the queen. She wanted to be powerful. Once she becomes the duchess and her in-law is the Marquess, she doesn’t lack anything.

Her father is a baron, which makes her the lowest noble rank. There’s no difference between her and commoners. That’s why she’s greedy for more. She wished to be at the top.

"There’s not much I can say, my Love. Also, shouldn’t you be heading to the tea party already? It’s getting late," he said, smiling at her.

Mirielle didn’t ask any more questions. She just went back to the table and continued her make-up till she was done. She looked at Evan one more time.

"I’m leaving, My lord,"

"Have a great time. My regards to the ladies," he said.

She bowed and left immediately. She just couldn’t wait to get there and tell Seraphina about Lucien marking someone else.

She walked outside, escorted by the guards and her maid. They already arranged a carriage for her, but her eyes caught another beautiful and elegant carriage.

"Hold on," she said and walked closer to it. "I’d like to ride with this one," she said.

She could already imagine the way the ladies at D’Amaris’ mansion stared at her once she alighted from this carriage. However, she was disappointed when the guard told her...

"I’m sorry, my lady but you cannot ride on that carriage," they told her. She shot a hard glare at them.

"What? Did you just tell me no? Do you know who I am? I’m the future duchess!" She yelled at them. "Why can’t I ride that?"

"It belongs to the young master’s guest. Sir Rin," he said.

"Sir Rin? Who the hell is that?" She asked. The guards exchanged glances with each other and remained silent. They didn’t say any more words which made her even more confused. It was a beautiful carriage.

Since she had the tea party to attend, she left the carriage and entered the one that the duke had prepared for her.

Immediately, she went to D’Amaris’s mansion.

Rin, who was already in the room, was reading the books that he got from the library. His brother was already tired of eating too many snacks, so he was also reading a book with Sasha. They were close to the balcony.

It was a picture book. Lucien must have made arrangements for it since he knew Winter was coming.

Rin smiled as he watched Winter reading with Sasha. They looked... like they were getting along well. Well, Winter was close to everyone, even at the brothel. Since he was a friendly type.

Rin groaned and wondered what was going on in the brothel already. It was noon and the golden goose game would be starting in the evening. He wanted to rest a bit so he would be awake by the time Lucien arrived, but he heard a knock on the door.

’Who is it? I hope it’s not... Evan,’

He mumbled to himself. He turned his head and saw Sasha, who was getting up to go to the door, but Rin signalled him to remain with Winter. He would take care of it. He then walked to the door and opened it, only for him to see a familiar face. He had seen that person close to Evan every time he attended the Duke’s game. It was his butler, Lioran.

Not just that, Lucien had told him to trust Lioran whenever he wasn’t home. He didn’t know why Lucien said that especially since Lioran worked for his father. Or maybe, Lioran really worked for Lucien.

Rin snapped out of his thoughts and faced the middle-aged man.

"Do you want something?" He asked.

"Pardon me," he lowered his head in respect. "The duke has asked me to invite you and your... co-guests for dinner this evening,"

"Dinner?" Rin asked and suddenly burst into laughter. "What is that old fart up to? How could he invite me to dinner?"

Lioran remained silent. Rin then leaned closer to the door and asked...

"Tell me Lioran... What should I do? Should I say yes... Or... No?"

"I have no idea what you’re asking me, sir," Lioran replied with a calm expression on his face.

"You should know why. Lucien had told me to trust you whenever he’s not around. So tell me, do I need to attend the dinner? Should I? The duke isn’t planning anything, is he?"

Lioran exhaled deeply and shook his head.

"He just wishes to have dinner, that’s all. He’s not planning anything," he responded and Rin smiled.

"However..." Lioran spoke again and Rin exchanged eye contact with him. "You shouldn’t attend the dinner alone. I’ll send a secret message to the young master so he will return very early,"

"I understand. Thank you, Lioran," Rin said and he bowed before walking away. Rin’s lips curved into a smile as he entered the room.

"Lucien has a good person by his side. How cute," he mumbled to himself, trying to take a nap before evening. He’s not just waiting for Lucien but also has to attend dinner with the duke. "Today is going to be exhausting,"

Meanwhile, at the D’Amaris mansion...

It was just ten minutes away from the Vortellion estate. Lady Mirielle arrived there and the footman helped her out of the carriage. She was elegant and alight as she held her beautiful gown.

"Good work. You should wait for me until I’m done," she said and the footman bowed before leaving.

Mirielle could hear the other ladies chatting, and she could hear her name on their lips.

"Isn’t that the carriage from the Vortellions’ house?"

"Didn’t you know? Lady Mirielle is going to be the next duchess. The duke is insanely in love with her,"

"Oh my! Isn’t she the lucky one? But... Isn’t the duke too old?"

"Old? With a face as handsome as his, he certainly isn’t old. Lady Mirielle is so lucky. Let’s say hi to her so she’ll invite us to the Vortellion estate,"

Mirielle could hear them. She proudly closed her eyes as she walked closer to the building. The ladies were waiting at the front porch.

"Greetings to you, Lady Mirielle,"

"Oh my, greetings to you too, Lady Jane. Your dress looks beautiful as always,"

"I should say the same to you. Those jewels look expensive,"

Lady Mirielle laughed as she touched it.

"I got it from the duke. It’s one of its kind. Beautiful, isn’t it?"

The other ladies started to gather around her as they tried to get on her good side. She just gave a fake smile as she talked to them.

’This is it. They should all look up to me! I’m the one who should be in charge,’ she thought to herself.

When she was a mere baron’s daughter, they never looked at her or even spoke to her. But now, it’s all different because she was the Duke’s next wife.

The door opened and the head maid of the D’Amaris house stepped out.

"Greetings to you, ladies. Lady Seraphina has been waiting for you. Come this way," she led them inside the house and they burst out at the other side of the mansion.

A huge and beautiful garden welcomed them. Their eyes kept scanning around till they got to the place that had been prepared for them. Tea and biscuits, with all kinds of snacks were laid on the table.

Close to the table, Lady Seraphina stood there, with a butterfly perched on her finger. She knew they were coming but didn’t look at them till they called her name. As she gracefully turned, she let the butterfly fly off her finger.

"You’re all here. I’m glad you could all make it," she said as she led them to the tables. At her table, there were only three seats and it was for her, Lady Mirielle and then Lady Jane.

The maids started serving tea and the gossip began.

"I can see how shiny you’ve become after being with the Duke, Lady Mirielle. I’m so envious of your skin,"

"Oh! How can you say such a thing, Lady Seraphina? You look even more beautiful than I am, right Lady Jane?"

Lady Jane, the daughter of another Marquess, gently let the tea cup leave her lips before answering.

"You’re both looking beautiful. Maybe I’m the one feeling odd," they laughed, even from the other tables and that’s when Mirielle decided to say what she wanted.

"So, ladies... Do you have any idea who Lord Lucien marked?" She asked, and everyone was startled, and suddenly, there was a crash. Seraphina dropped her teacup.

"Marked? Lucien has marked someone? Is it... No! Don’t tell me..." She stuttered as her eyes grew wider.
