Chapter 194: A Demon Spy?

Auren’s eyes narrowed at his daughter, irritation already building in his throat. He wanted to get home and rest, not meet his daughter in his room, speaking like she knew where he had been.

"What kind of silly question is that?" he asked sharply.

Seraphina only smiled wider. That sly smile she always used when she wanted to annoy him.

"Oh? So you admit it?" she said lightly, tilting her head. "You went to the brothel... didn’t you?"

Auren stared at her in disbelief. "Seraphina. Don’t start."

She stood, brushing off her long nightdress as if she were preparing for a performance.

"Please," she said, walking toward him, "you left the house dressed like a commoner. You came back with your hair a mess, shirt wrinkled, neck..."

"Stop," Auren warned. "Did you follow me? Were you stalking me?"

She laughed softly.

"Relax, Father. I didn’t follow you. I just guessed. And... I was right."

Her smile turned even cruel than before.

"But tell me..." she leaned closer, "you didn’t go there to make a slut out of my future stepmother, did you?"

The slap came fast as Auren didn’t think... his hand simply moved to her face.

SLAP!

Seraphina’s head snapped to the side after she was struck on her cheek. She froze, almost not believing her eyes that went wide with shock. Her hand slowly touched her cheek. It stung. It stung as hell.

Her father... hardly ever raised a hand to her. Never. After all, she was his princess and he was ready to do everything and anything for her. The first time... was because of Rin.

And now the second time...

"...because of that woman?" she whispered.

Auren clenched his jaw. "Watch your mouth."

For a moment, she just stared at him. She watched his expression and how guilty he looked after hitting her. Then she began to laugh. Though it wasn’t loud, it was cold.

Her laughter crawled up Auren’s spine as he furrowed his brows, wondering if his daughter had been possessed.

"Oh, Father..." she said between breaths, "you’re scared, aren’t you?"

Auren stiffened.

"You’re scared someone might take you away from me. Scared someone might separate us. Scared someone might take your precious crush. Isn’t that right?"

"Seraphina..."

"No." She raised a hand. "Let me finish."

Her smile disappeared. Darkness settled in her eyes.

"I won’t let it happen. Whether it’s adoption... marriage... anything. I’ll ruin every plan you have. It can only be you and me."

She turned and began walking toward the door. Then she stopped, turned, and gave him a final dagger of a smile.

"And I haven’t given up on Lucien either. I will bring him here one day... as my husband. So get ready to accept him."

Before Auren could react...

SLAM!

She slammed the door behind her and the room went silent.

Auren stood there, staring at nothing for a long moment. Then his knees weakened and he dropped onto the couch.

He covered his face with both hands.

"...What am I going to do with that girl..."

He slowly lowered his hands and stared at the one he had struck her with.

His fingertips trembled.

"I shouldn’t have hit her..." he muttered. He rubbed his forehead, stress pounding behind his eyes. "...May the demons be exterminated soon. I need to send her out of the capital again."

He leaned back, sighing heavily.

He wished he could turn back time.

He wished he could understand Seraphina better.

But right now... he didn’t even understand himself.

.

.

Seraphina stormed into her room and locked the door with a fierce click. Her breath trembled as she marched toward the mirror.

She stared at her reflection as she saw a faint red mark that bloomed across her cheek. The outline of Auren’s fingers was still visible.

She clenched her fists.

"He hit me... again..."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"All because of Rin," she hissed.

Her heartbeat sped up... anger, humiliation, jealousy, all mixed at once. She looked toward her dressing table. There was still no reply from Jane. She had written letters to her asking what the plan was. Asking what she could do, but there was no respite. Still no guidance on how to remove Rin.

Her frustration snapped. She swept her arm across the table.

CRASH!

Everything fell... jewellery, letters, perfumed oils, glass bottles.

The mirror behind the table cracked sharply when a small container hit it. Seraphina breathed harder, her shoulders rising and falling.

She stared at her reflection in the shattered mirror.

"...I won’t rest..." she whispered. "I won’t rest until I kill Rin Elric."

She stepped closer to the shattered glass.

"If Jane is too slow, I’ll poison him myself."

Her eyes narrowed.

"I won’t be jailed. I won’t be executed. He’s a commoner. Even if he claims to be a Duke, no one believes it yet. The King hasn’t approved it. So even if I kill him..."

She wore a cruel smile.

"I might only get a slap on the wrist."

She placed her hand on the broken mirror and whispered:

"So... Rin Elric... let’s see how long you can live."

.

.

Rin had woken before the sun came up. He stood by the door, staring at the letter Sasha had delivered.

It was from Lirien.

He exhaled softly after reading through it.

"So... Mother plans to continue the Golden Goose selection for seven whole days..." he murmured.

He rubbed his temples.

"She’ll kill herself at this rate."

Sasha stepped into the room quietly.

"Will you be sending a reply, young master?"

"No," Rin said, folding the letter. "I’ll visit her myself later. For now, stay with Winter. He needs someone around him. I don’t want him to wake up and see no one by his side."

Sasha nodded. "Understood."

Rin watched him leave, then closed the door again.

The moment he turned...

Lucien was awake, sitting up with messy hair and tired eyes. He looked hot with that messy hair that fell over his forehead.

Rin blinked with a blush on his cheek. "I’m sorry. Did I wake you?"

Lucien shook his head. "No... I have to go to the palace soon. I was going to wake up anyway."

Rin walked closer to him and before he could say anything more, Lucien reached out and hugged him. His arms slipped around his slim waist.

"I don’t want to go..." Lucien muttered against his shoulder. "I want to stay here all day. With you."

Rin chuckled softly and patted his head.

"I want that too. But you can’t."

Lucien pouted. Hard.

Rin sat in front of him, placing both hands on Lucien’s shoulders.

"My brother and I have to stay here for a few more days. Can we?"

Lucien didn’t even hesitate. He was glad to hear that Rin would be staying for a few days. He could imagine himself returning home to see Rin, waiting for him. "Sure. I don’t mind. Feel at home."

Rin narrowed his eyes a little.

"Lucien."

"...What?"

"Don’t focus on me too much. Finish your palace duties. You have to strengthen the security. If the demon attacks and you’re blamed, I’ll stop seeing you."

Lucien froze.

"You can’t say that."

"I can," Rin replied calmly. "And if you ignore your work because of me, I will follow through."

Lucien’s shoulders slumped.

"...Fine. I’ll behave."

"Good."

Lucien suddenly cupped Rin’s face and kissed him. Rin kissed back.

When they parted, Rin placed a hand on the glowing orb embedded in Lucien’s chest.

"Take care of yourself," he whispered. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Lucien nodded and went to wash up.

Rin escorted him to the door and watched him leave. When he closed the door, Rin leaned against it and muttered:

"...I look like a wife seeing off her husband..."

He blinked.

"...why did I call myself that? A wife? Me? Myung? No way!"

He rubbed his face and laughed quietly. Then he stretched his body.

"I should sleep a bit before checking on Mother. But..."

His eyes narrowed suddenly.

"...Why do I feel like I’m being watched?"

He turned sharply toward the window.

A crow sat outside.

Black feathers.

Red glowing eyes.

Rin’s own eyes brightened.

"Get lost," he muttered.

The crow vanished instantly. It didn’t just spread its wings and fly away.

VANISHED.

Rin frowned.

"...Definitely a demon spy."

He sat on the bed, silent for a moment.

"But why watch me? What do they want? Is someone in the capital also possessed by demons?"

.

.

In a hidden chamber, Jane knelt in front of a demonic circle. Her breath trembled. Blood dripped from her lips onto the glowing symbols.

She wiped her chin weakly.

"What type of magic did he just use...?" she gasped.

Her chest rose and fell sharply.

She had summoned a crow demon... a spy demon that even high mages couldn’t easily dispel.

Yet Rin... Rin Elric... A commoner. He made it disappear without moving a finger.

"Impossible..." Jane whispered. "Does he have a demon of his own? Did he... sign a contract?"

She clenched the floor with shaking hands.

"Who... exactly... is Rin Elric?"

The candles flickered like they were giving an answer, and they went out.
