Chapter 63: Words

Adam’s soul was troubled by the thought of a future where there would be ten thousand hunters. He had not given much thought to the horrifying scope of the war he was fighting because he had been so concerned with surviving the here and now.

He buried the thought deep and pushed it away. The future could not afford to overwhelm him. He needed to live in the present. He had one last query. A question that had been bothering him ever since he first woke up in his teacher’s office following his first death.

He looked at Assassin Five his gaze intense. "Do you know why they’re after me?"

The question seemed to suck the air out of the room. The casual professionalism on Assassin Five’s face vanished replaced by a sudden pallor. He looked down at the floor avoiding Adam’s eyes.

"I’ve only heard rumors" he said his voice a low hesitant murmur. "The word on the street is that you offended a powerful family. Or your parents did. And you have some kind of proof something that could destroy them."

The mention of his parents ignited a dormant volcano of rage within Adam. It was a raw visceral anger a feeling he had not allowed himself to feel in a very long time. He strode forward until he was standing right in front of the bound assassin. He loomed over him a figure of pure menace.

"Who are they?" he demanded his voice a low dangerous growl.

The assassin flinched at the sudden intensity of Adam’s anger. "I don’t know" he said quickly his voice shaking for the first time.

"There are a lot of things in this world that you and I will never know. But from what I’ve heard they are very powerful. No one puts a hundred-million-dollar starting bounty on someone’s head unless one of two things is true. Either the target is incredibly dangerous a high-profile figure in their own right. Or the target has crossed a high-authority family a family that can bend the world to its will. And for you the second case seems the most likely."

Adam took a step back, his rage fading as fast as it had appeared. He kept thinking about what the assassin had said. a family with high authority. The puzzle was beginning to fit together.

The dishonest police officers who had made fun of him for his parents’ "suicide." the unrelenting chase.

The enormous reward. All of this led to one horrifying conclusion. He was entangled in the web of a vicious and strong foe who had already ruined his family and now sought to do the same to him.

"That’s everything I know" Assassin Five said his voice regaining some of its composure. "Now it’s time for you to keep your end of the promise."

Assassin Four was still weeping silently his eyes closed as he awaited his fate.

Adam looked at the two men. His promise. A painless death. "I’m a man of my word" he said his voice quiet and steady.

He raised his pistol. He didn’t hesitate. He fired two quick shots. The muffled coughs of the silenced pistol were the only sounds in the quiet kitchen. The two assassins slumped in their chairs their lives extinguished in an instant.

He looked at their lifeless bodies. He felt nothing. No remorse. No satisfaction. Just a weary sense of inevitability. This was his life now. A cycle of violence and death.

He spent the next half hour dragging the bodies out to the backyard and burying them next to the first three assassins he had dealt with. The sun was higher in the sky now a bright indifferent witness to his grim work.

When he was done he went back inside. He looked at the clock on the wall. It was 7:30. If he didn’t leave soon he would be late for school. The thought was so absurd it was almost comical. He hadn’t eaten. He hadn’t slept. He had just killed five men and buried their bodies in his backyard. And now he was worried about being tardy.

He let out a long sigh. He went upstairs and changed into his school uniform. He grabbed the baseball cap he had taken from Sophia’s house and put it on. He walked out of his home locking the door behind him.

As he walked down the street he pulled the special phone he had taken from the dead assassin out of his pocket. He found the app. The Byrd. A simple icon of a black bird. He tapped on it. The app opened to a single screen. A login page with a field for a password.

He had no way of knowing the password. He cursed himself for his oversight. He should have asked the assassin for it before he killed him. It was a rookie mistake a critical error in judgment. He had been so focused on the bigger picture that he had missed a crucial detail.

In his school bag, he placed the phone. He was aware of its continued value. Someday he would put it to use. He then moved the phone to his system inventory, a private mental area that only he could access, for storage. He did not want to put himself in danger by carrying it.

He began to make his way to the school. He made an effort to clear his head in order to ignore the ideas of assassins, plots, and wealthy families. All he wanted was a few hours of normalcy. a few hours in which he could act like a typical child or student.

All he wanted was a typical school life. However, he knew deep down that normal was a luxury he could no longer afford. Normal was a relic from a life that had vanished forever.
