Chapter 179: Found It
Arc 3, Chapter 179—Found It

"On it, Buddy!" Shugo unshaded his giant Fork and got to work. He used it as a shiver, digging out all the soil around the roots.
The soil around the roots was really loose to dig up. But every time his shard brushed against the roots, it would produce a clanging noise.
Dammit, just how tough is this tree for its roots to be this hard?
Everyone felt it was incredible. Nevertheless, Shugo kept digging and digging, till he accidentally cut through the weaker root Levon spoke of.
But what they didn’t expect was that the moment it was cut, an ear-piercing scream bellowed, causing them to place their hands on their ears in defense.
Swiiiiiii~
Such a high pitched cry might shatter class, and was already causing their eardrums to vibrate.
Many subconsciously placed their hands on their ears, feeling their eardrums vibrate at an unnatural pace.
It was terrible!!!!
Their ears were about to explode from the high pitches.
"Look, look!" Another pointed. "The leaves... they are turning green!"
What’s going on? Why did the leaves turn from an autumn reddish orangey-brown, to thick vibrant green?
It carried for a bit, before stopping, which in turn resulted in the leaves turning back to their original color.
Hold on?...
Unleashing his Katana shard, Levon squinted his eyes thoughtfully. "Shugo, do it again."
"Got it." Shugo caught off another part of the root, and the tree began screaming again.
Only this time, its body was met with Levon’s Katana the second its leaves turned green.
~BAm! Bam! Bam! Bam!
The tree’s body, which was over 160 feet tall, was sliced into 7 pieces before falling. And just as Levon expected, the leaves turned orangey-red after a few seconds.
Now, the tree has regained its corner hardness. Fortunately, Levon had cut out 7 pieces already.
The longest of the pieces was 180 feet. This piece they would discard and leave behind, since it also had the branches and everything else attached to it. The remaining 6 pieces were equal in length, and would be the prices they would take back to the train.
"I think this is good enough," the leader of the other team muttered out. "I say we leave this place now. It’s really giving me the creeps."
"Yeah..."
"No arguments there."
Everyone else, including Leo and Shugo, agreed with him. They’ve gotten what they wanted, so there’s no point staying back and putting themselves in deeper shit than they already were.
Soon, several people got the overly long and gigantic pieces of logs onto their shoulders.
Now, it was time to set off. The gang were in a good mood as they rushed back to the trains. Too bad that the enemy who set their eyes on them wasn’t interested in letting go of them any time soon.
Hmm?
"They’re coming!" Levon exclaimed, causing everyone to momentarily freeze.
"We’ve got the wood! You guys take what you can and head for the trains... Shugo, go with them."
As for Leo and himself...
Levon paused, unsheathing his Katana once more. "Ready?"
Leo shrugged with a devilish smirk, his hands now creating duplicates of his sharded Card. "As ready as I’ll ever be."
"Good..."
The duo prepared to meet the enemy. But just then, the enemy’s footsteps seemed to come to a halt as well, no longer feeling sporadic and mindless.
’Something has changed...’
Levon felt his heart now beating too excessively, as he unraveled a lollipop and placed it into his mouth.
Don’t ask him why, but he could sense a change in the tone of battle—a change that could spell doom for them both if not careful.
Leo also seemed to notice it too.
"Bro, why do I feel we won’t be fighting those brainless level 1 and 2 ghouls any more?"
....
They say the last hour of demise is often when the human senses become its most weaponized version of itself. The air became even more chillier than it already was, and the natural sounds from nature seemed to die down too.
Leo’s words died in a flash when a low chuckle echoed through the trees.
"My, my... look at the little lambs wandering into the slaughter." A silky voice came from everyone and nowhere at the same time. "How delightful."
A figure materialized from the shadows, stepping into the edge of their light. From the fact that the being could speak, meant the being was either a level 2 Ghoul, or a higher Ghoul.
At Level 2, Ghouls can already talk, their human sides battling with their vampiric sides. That being said, there’s no way the ghoul before them was a Lesser Noble.
Although more intact and cleaner-looking than the many ghouls they’ve fought, it still had signs of rot and deterioration. Sorry, but Winhest had stated that only Ghouls had rotting appearances.
The moment they step into the rank of Lesser Nobles, they start looking exactly like ordinary human beings. They can stroll among us at night, and even attend festivities and night parties too.
It’s just that their appearances were quite ugly, even worse off than most good humans. They looked like O’Hare, with deformities that weren’t very questionable to humans.
Some have hunched backs, others have eye deformities, others have just 4 fingers .. you make it. But all these deformities and disabilities were acceptable to humans in the outside world. And the stronger a vampire gets, the more they will be able to craft their appearance to the way they like, becoming beautiful or extremely handsome.
Levon squinted his eyes deeply. The feeling he got sent shivers crawling up his spine. He felt this ghoul before him, might be a level 4 ghoul, one with far more intelligence than the rest.
’This could get tricky.’
"You can tell I’m different, right?" The creature smiled, revealing fangs that gleamed like polished ivory. "How observant.... Sadly, that will do you no good now."
Just then, the Ghoul whistles, causing several level 12 ghouls to appear. And without warning, the ghouls moved in a blur of motion.
Bam!~
Leo and Levon twisted their duplicated shards, blocking and attacking the best they could. And all the while, the Ghoul 4 was sitting on a stone, his crimson eyes gleaming in the dark murderously.
"Come now? No need to fight so much." The level 4 Ghoul teased. "You both feel fortunate, since I’ve decided to add some of your blood to my collection."
What did he mean by that?
Levon had already turned 2 Ghoul 3s to dust, while relishing on the Ghoul 4’s words. But then, he caught sight of a particular level 3 ghoul, who seemed to be wearing a Bloodren 10 uniform.
Only, the uniform was so old and worn out... probably a year old.
Everything clicked in Levon’s mind. This guy is raising an army with every passing Bloodren 10 batch that passes by for the examinations each year.
From the looks of things, it seems this ghoul has a far higher intelligence than they thought, because it wants to run them, the ones it has observed to be the strongest in each cabin.
Gaara had once told him that when a strong Bloodren turns into a ghoul, even though the shard flees back to the heavens, the body still remains strong, because they’ve trained in unnatural ways.
Luckily for everyone, once you get turned, you forget everything you were as a human... all your human side will know, is that it must try to overcome its vampiric side.
Only when you successfully overcome your vampire side, will you recall a few things about yourself as time goes on.
Well, this knowledge was all based on one subject—Sultan.
After Sultan turned, he was just like every other Ghoul, till he won against his Vampiric side.
Then, all memories came flooding in from time to time.
In the first 10 years, he could recall his name and a glimpse of his hatred for Vampires. But why did he hate vampires so much? He couldn’t remember. All he knew was that he would rather get run over by a train a million times over, before joining any Vampire ranks.
That was it.
Then, after working with the Order under heavy supervision for another 70 years, he finally recalled who he was before getting bitten.
It’s just that there are still more mysteries surrounding his past. And after hundreds and hundreds of years, Sultan could finally remember everything!
That was that.
Once you get turned, you won’t even remember how to fight. It’s like you’re a newborn baby, needing to learn everything from scratch. And the only way you’ll ever recall anything, is if your human side overpowers your vampire side.
It seems this guy... this Ghoul 4 is quite bent on making minions out of the groingest amongst them. And if it should fail, maybe it would go for the mid-range Bloodren 10s.
Either way, Leo and Levon now found themselves content in battle, fighting for what seemed like an eternity.
