Chapter 110: Cute Little Assistant

For a moment, they all stood in daze, just staring blankly at the empty spot next to Kade where Einar Blackstone had been just a few seconds ago.

"Ah?" Kade was the first to recover. He blinked twice... And then threw himself at the door, banging on it with his fists, and rattling the door handle. If it were any normal door, not an enchanted one at the witch’s house, it probably wouldn’t have survived such an assault for long.

The guards followed shortly after. They had been standing at the gate up to this point, monitoring the street, but with their pack leader gone, snatched by the witch, they rushed to Kade’s side...

And grabbed Felix by the collar, raising him up and pressing against the wall, almost knocking off the pram in the process. Vivi, who had been dozing off peacefully until now, suddenly woke up and started crying out loud.

But the guard didn’t care. He just growled at Felix, "What is going on? Explain yourself."

His reaction was understandable. Felix had been introduced as the witch’s assistant to them. The problem was that...

"I-I don’t know!" Felix squirmed in the guard’s grasp, throwing anxious glances at the pram. Perhaps he should have left Vivi at Brielle’s... But he didn’t expect a situation like that might arise!

"Is that so?" The guard didn’t believe him one bit. "I advise you to think once again..."

Felix looked over at Kade, asking for help... But he was bound to be disappointed. The Alpha had paused his assault at the door, and turned his attention to the Omega... But his dark eyes were full of unease, hesitation, and doubt. After all, while he knew that Felix wasn’t actually the witch’s assistant, he also knew that they were connected... It was through Felix that this whole thing was arranged.

And it was about his father, the leader of their pack. So, even if normally he wouldn’t suspect Felix, it was only natural that in such a situation he was uncertain as to what to think...

Luckily, Felix’s interrogation didn’t last long, as the door opened again. Kade immediately tried to rush inside, but he was stopped at the threshold, bouncing off an invisible wall. Purple smoke poured out once more, and Felix felt the guard’s grip on him disappearing. He quickly looked around, finding the pram by following Vivi’s cries, and picked up his daughter, rocking her in his arms to pacify them.

Everyone else was on the ground. The smoke that enveloped them was a weakening spell, aimed at the guards and Kade. Once they fell under it, there was nothing they could do but to stare at Felix, the guards with fury, while Kade with a lot of mixed feelings...

A piece of paper then fluttered out, landing in Felix’s hands, and the door shut again.

It was an old, aged piece of paper, burned at the edges, with a message written in black ink, still wet and fresh. The familiar, overly ornamental writing.

[Touch my cute little assistant again, and you will end up cursed.

Only the patient is allowed inside. Wait patiently outside until I undo his curse. It might take a long time, and I need absolute peace... Surely you wouldn’t want me to make any mistakes?]

’My cute little assistant’. The witch must have heard everything. But also... Wasn’t that awfully similar to how Kade used to call Felix? ’My cute little mate.’

Felix’s cheeks flushed slightly, but he shook his head, dispelling the thoughts. "There you go," he said, tossing the message to Kade. "This is what the witch says. Accept his terms, or leave. We don’t need to help you out, it’s you who need our help!"

"Uh... Fe... I mean, Lex, please wait!" Kade called out, after barely giving the message a passing glance. "About just now... I’m sorry..." he tried to apologize.

However, Felix only put Vivi back in the pram, and walked away without a word.

Of course, he understood Kade and the guards’ reactions. It was the matter of life and death for their pack leader, and they hadn’t been warned that something like that might happen. They reacted instinctively, lashing out at the most suspicious person in sight, who was likely to be involved in whatever the witch was doing...

But just because Felix understood, that didn’t change the fact that he didn’t appreciate being treated that way. He was just as clueless as them, not to mention, he was there with his pup! It would be one thing if they were to jump on him like that when he was alone, not that he would have been fine with that, but the fact that they startled Vivi...

Just as they had the right to be suspicious about him and question him, Felix had the right to be angry about it.

He returned home, trying to focus his full attention on Vivi, and forget about Kade. Which wasn’t difficult - now that their bond was broken, even Felix’s wolf was on his side. No longer whining and whimpering when the Alpha was around (although he still showed some signs of being fond of Kade), and even growling at all the Bloodmoon Pack’s members during their short argument earlier! The wolf and Felix’s feelings were finally aligned again, after all the mental bickering they had done since he had turned eighteen and discovered his fated mate bond with Jared.

The rest of the day passed as usual, except that Remi was not around. Still taking care of Kade’s father, it seemed. The black van was still in front of the witch’s house when Felix went out in the evening, but he only took a glance from afar, not approaching any nearer. Although he was still curious, it was better for him not to get involved too much...

So Einar Blackstone was cursed. Even that alone seemed like something Felix would have been better off not knowing. Luckily, the witch was about to undo the curse, so it should no longer be relevant... Past secrets that were no longer accurate in the present should be a bit less dangerous, right?

Either way, after the morning incident, Felix would rather just stay away.

Especially since it was starting to rain.
