Chapter 26: Precedents

After that... argument? conversation? Kade didn’t show up in front of Felix for almost a week. He was still around, of course, Felix could sense his presence, but that was to be expected. His original reason why he came to Silverfall was to find the mermaid, and he hasn’t accomplished that yet... However, with him not coming to bother Felix, Felix almost started believing he convinced the Alpha that they weren’t fated mates...

But would it be that easy?

Of course not!

And so, on one snowy afternoon, Kade showed up in Crossroads. First ordering a meal, and then just waiting around. For Felix to finish his shift.

Four hours later, he was still waiting. Even as the bistro closed, he still remained in his seat. No one dared to ask him to leave, so he just sat in place, as the evening team cleaned.

Ignoring Eden’s obvious glances, Felix finished scrubbing the counter, put down all the cleaning supplies, and went to get changed. He just wanted to get back home and go to bed, so he didn’t try to drag it on... Not like it would discourage Kade, not after waiting for HOURS already.

And once he was done, he left through the front door. No trying to sneak out through the window or the back door. It would all be pointless anyway! He just marched forward, opening the door and walking right out.

Of course, Kade instantly got up from his seat, trailing after him. "Come with me, I’ll give you a ride!" he offered.

At first, Felix wanted to refuse, since that was his default response. However...

The cold wind was blowing hard, tugging on his crappy knitted scarf, and whipping his face. Snowflakes were intensely dancing in the air, falling down on Felix’s head and shoulders, the wetness passing through the layers of clothing, and adding up to the feeling of coldness. Similarly his feet, just after a few steps, Felix could feel freezing dampness seeping through...

"Where’s your car parked?" he turned to Kade, pretending not to see the wide grin that blossomed on the Alpha’s face. At the end of the day, even if he refused, it’s not like Kade would just give up, would he?

"Right this way!" Still smiling so much that it left Felix wondering how the Alpha’s face muscles didn’t feel sore, Kade grabbed Felix by the shoulders, and gently led him to his black sports car parked in the corner of the small parking lot, even going so far as to open the door for Felix. It was nice and all...

But Felix’s expression instantly soured. Because Kade’s behavior meant that their whole ’mate’ ordeal was far from over.

"I’ve done some research," Kade said, starting the car and heading... no, not in the direction of Felix’s home. Felix remained silent though, as he already expected such a turn of events.

At least he was getting a ride home, and didn’t have to trudge through the wind and the snow.

"What research?" he asked without much interest, watching the dark scenery outside the window.

"Regarding the fated mate bond. Having more than one fated mate, to be precise."

Felix’s shoulders flinched, but he still tried to play it cool, rolling his eyes. "That’s a complete bull-"

"There are precedents," Kade cut in, not allowing Felix to dismiss the topic. "Cases when a wolf had two or more fated mates. More common for the Alphas, but I’ve also found three recorded instances of it happening to an Omega. While they were never confirmed..."

"Exactly! They must be just rumors!" Felix nodded his head. "Or just baseless claims. They probably wanted to just have a little harem for themselves, so they lied about the fated mate bond to justify themselves..."

"But why would the others go along with it? Especially with the Omega cases. How many Alphas do you know that would agree to such a thing?"

Felix scoffed, shrugging his shoulders. "I don’t know, maybe they were bewitched, or something!"

"Oh? Then am I also bewitched?" Kade let out a laugh.

"Well, I don’t know! You’re in such a position, that there must be plenty of Alphas and Betas jealous of you. Perhaps one of them played a trick on you before you came to Silverfall?"

It took a moment before Kade was able to stifle a laugh threatening to escape his chest, after which he put on a worried, pitiful expression. "Oh, no! Then what am I going to do now?"

"I’m not sure... Perhaps putting some distance between us, and not seeing each other for a few years might help?" Felix suggested.

However, Kade only shook his head sadly. "No, I don’t think that would work... I would die of loneliness before I could be cured!"

Felix slapped his hand over his face with an exasperated sigh. Really, this Alpha was such a headache!

"Then how about you try rejecting me?" he tried again. "Then you’ll know there’s no bond between us!"

"Hmm, nope. Not falling for that!"

’Tsk,’ Felix clicked his tongue internally, turning his eyes back to the window. And then promptly closing them, to escape Kade’s handsome face reflected in the glass.

He didn’t even know when he fell asleep. At some point, he just felt being pulled out into the cold, and lifted up in a pair of strong, muscular arms...

"Hmm..." he groaned, blinking a few times, and squinting at the snowflakes that fell into his eyes. It took a moment before his mind woke up to catch up with the situation...

And he instantly jolted up, jumping down from Kade’s arms.

And slipping on the icy pavement. He would have fallen, if it weren’t for Kade grabbing his arm and stabilizing him in time.

"Careful now!"

"Ahem, sorry. And thanks." Felix cleared his throat, pulling his arm from Kade’s grip, and straightening his jacket. "For this... And for the ride."

"No problem! Anything for my mate!" Kade grinned.

"...I’ve told you I’m not your mate!"

But Kade only chuckled at Felix’s words. He stood there, on the side of the road, watching Felix as he walked to his front door and disappeared inside. Only once the windows in the house lit up, did he get back in his car, and drive away.
