Chapter 143: The Emperor’s Signature

Adam considered the Principal’s words. He thought about the bureaucratic wall the old man had just erected in front of him.

For a moment a genuine silence fell over the vast auditorium.

Everyone waited to see how this defiant newcomer would respond to such a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

How could he possibly get ten professors to sign for him when he had just angered them all?

Then an idea a brilliant and audacious solution came to Adam. A slow knowing smile spread across his face.

He looked up at the Principal on the stage.

His expression was once again one of complete unshakeable confidence.

"Yes, you are correct Principal," Adam acknowledged. His voice was calm and reasonable not at all angry or frustrated.

"If I cannot obtain the signatures of ten professors the staff members and yourself then my group The New Warriors cannot be officially formed. I was aware that there would be... difficulties in my plan." He paused for a moment letting the tension in the room build. He was enjoying this. "But for this particular problem," he continued his smile widening slightly "I have a rather elegant solution."

All the professors on the stage all the students in the audience and even the Principal himself leaned forward a little in their seats. Their curiosity was piqued.

They all wanted to know. What possible solution could this boy have for such a clear and absolute institutional roadblock? The rules were the rules.

The Principal however had a dawning suspicion a faint inkling of where this was heading. He started to guess what the boy’s audacious plan might be. It was a crazy idea but it was the only one that made sense.

Adam smiled again a flash of white teeth.

"If," he proposed his voice ringing with a challenge that was both respectful and utterly defiant

"if I were to bring you the signature of the Emperor himself a signed document from His Majesty endorsing the formation of this new group... would I still require the other signatures Principal sir?"

The question landed like a bombshell in the silent auditorium. A collective gasp went through the huge crowd of students and faculty.

The eyes of every student and every professor widened in utter disbelief. They all turned to look at the Principal.

They were waiting to see how he would respond to such an incredible unprecedented counter-proposal. No one had ever dared to suggest such a thing before.

Even Monica was visibly shocked by Adam’s words. That’s impossible, she thought her mind reeling in surprise. Even if I his own daughter were to ask for such a thing Father would never approve.

He would never interfere in the Academy’s established traditions to such a degree. He always says the Academy must run itself.

The Principal stared at Adam for a few long silent seconds. His face was a mask of stern seriousness. He then slowly removed his hands from the podium.

They were still gripping the cracked wood with immense force. And then he did something no one in the entire auditorium expected. He smiled. It was a genuine appreciative smile a smile of real amusement and respect.

And with that smile the immense pressure the powerful aura he had been projecting vanished completely. The air in the auditorium became light and breathable once more. The heavy weight was gone.

"You have one week," the Principal declared his voice now calm almost amused.

"Bring me the Emperor’s signature within one week. And in this one week you and your new group will not be afforded the basic facilities that the other established groups receive. You will have no special access no extra resources. But the moment you bring me the Emperor’s signed approval your group The New Warriors will be officially formed. After that your group will be granted all the facilities and privileges of any other official Academy group."

This pronouncement sent another wave of shock through the students. The upperclassmen who had just been reveling in their perceived victory when the Principal stated the rules were now staring in disbelief.

The fourth-year students the elites who had remained mostly calm and detached throughout the earlier proceedings now turned their full attention to Adam. They finally understood.

This boy this "Eric" was not just some arrogant upstart. He was a genuine threat to the established order of their school. He was a competitor unlike any they had ever faced before.

And the fact that he on his very first day as a first-year student had essentially forced the Principal the head of the entire Academy to back down to concede to his demands was a humiliation of the highest order for all of them.

The professors on the stage were equally astonished.

They couldn’t believe that the Principal had just given in that he had given this newly arrived student a week to accomplish the impossible task of getting the Emperor’s personal signature.

A new intense curiosity about this boy this Eric began to grow in the minds of some of the professors.

They wanted to see if he could actually do it.

Others however began to dislike him intensely from that very moment. They saw him as a disruptive disrespectful force a threat to the Academy’s long-standing traditions.

In the first-year section the forty members of The New Warriors exchanged excited triumphant glances.

Their leader had done it. He had faced down the entire Academy establishment and had carved out a path for them to exist.

The other first-year students the ones who had not joined now looked on with a mixture of confusion and a dawning profound regret.

Perhaps they thought they should have been braver.

They should have joined him. But for now they would all wait. For one week they would all wait to see if the impossible could truly be achieved.

As the Principal finished speaking Adam also retracted his own power.

The immense blue aura that had surrounded him faded away.

The Principal a genuine smile still on his face looked only at Adam.

"I like you boy," he said his voice now soft. It was a private compliment spoken in a very public space. "And I agree with the Emperor. You do possess the potential to surpass him one day."

This final statement was the most shocking of all. Monica’s eyes widened. As did the eyes of every third and fourth-year student in the hall.

The Principal had never in his entire tenure as head of the Academy given such a compliment to any student.

To even suggest that someone could surpass the Emperor the living symbol of peak power on the entire continent was almost sacrilegious it was almost unthinkable.

Everyone knew there were only two possible futures for someone who possessed such incredible potential.

The first and by far the most common future was that the individual would be eliminated.

They would be killed one way or another by their rivals before they could become a true threat.

The second a far rarer and more frightening possibility was that the Emperor himself would take them under his wing.

He would nurture their talent. He would shape them into the next great powerhouse of the continent.

And at this moment it seemed that Eric the boy from a small insignificant kingdom was now on that very path. He was on the path to greatness or to a quick death.
