Chapter 49: Chapter 49: A New Dawn

Venus stared at the floating status screen for a long moment. Her fingers trembled, reaching out toward the glowing letters as if they might vanish any second.

But they didn’t.

They stayed right there. Clear, glowing, and completely real.

She wasn’t dreaming.

Her heartbeat thundered in her chest. She could now feel the low pulse of energy coursing through her veins. Warmth radiated from her core, subtle but undeniable.

"I... I have really awakened."

Her legs moved before her mind could catch up. She threw off the blanket, staggered to her feet, and burst out of her room barefoot, forgetting everything else. Her sore muscles complained, but she didn’t care. The only thing that mattered now was telling them.

She rushed down the stairs two steps at a time, nearly tripping in her excitement.

"Mom! Dad!"

Evangeline was in the kitchen, stirring a pot of stew. Her eyes lifted in surprise. "Venus? What’s wrong?"

And then came the words that had never been uttered in their home before.

"I have awakened!"

Evangeline blinked. "You... what?"

"I awakened a System!" Venus shouted, practically dancing where she stood. "I’m an Evolver now!"

She held up her hands as if proof would just spill out. "Look, look, I have a bloodline! Sacred Crystal Wyrm! I even have a skill! Transformation something. I don’t know how it works yet but it’s there! I’m Level 3 already!"

Clang!

The ladle dropped from Evangeline’s hand, splashing broth onto the floor.

"What?"

At that moment, her father, Versalon , came out of the side room, still wiping sleep from his eyes. "What’s all this yelling about—"

"Dear, your daughter.. She has awakened," Evangeline announced still trembling with tears beginning to well in her eyes.

"Huh! What?" Versalon repeated, this time sharply.

"I have awakened, Dad!" Venus cried again, louder this time. "It happened last night, I think. I don’t know how. Maybe... maybe a miracle? But I swear it’s true!"

To prove it, she activated her only skill.

A faint shimmer enveloped her skin. Crystalline scales glimmered briefly across her arms and faded just as fast. A heartbeat passed in stunned silence.

Versalon stumbled forward and grabbed her shoulders. "Daughter, you have awakened. For real?"

Venus could only nod, her eyes misty with happiness.

Evangeline pressed her hand to her mouth, a sob escaping as she closed the distance and wrapped them both into a trembling hug. "Oh, my baby... you did it. You did the impossible. I am really happy for you."

Outside the house, a pair of golden eyes watched everything through the window.

It was Ryu.

Ryu leaned against the wooden frame, arms folded.

He saw it all—the disbelief, the joy, the tears.

A soft smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

"Good for you, Venus. I don’t need to come down to your once again."

He didn’t need thanks. He didn’t want credit.

This wasn’t about debt or repayment.

From there, Ryu headed straight to the Hunter Hall to take on another mission.

Today, the hall was a little busier than before. A few veteran hunters were gathered around one of the boards, discussing something in low voices, while a couple of newbies nervously browsed the lower-tier missions. The atmosphere buzzed with energy and ambition.

Ryu approached a group of hunters and casually asked, "Hey seniors, how do you earn more silver coins around here?"

One of the older hunters, a man with a jagged scar across his chin and a greatsword strapped to his back, glanced at him and said,

"If you want real money, forget F-Rank missions. Go for Dungeon Diving."

"Dungeons?" Ryu tilted his head.

"Yeah," the man replied. "Look for valuable drops in the beginner dungeon. Skill Books Mana Crystals, rare ores, Monster cores, fangs, hides. Anything strong enough to be used in forging weapons, making gear, or brewing potions. You bring that back, and merchants or the Hunter Hall will pay well."

Another hunter chimed in, "Especially Skill Books. Even low-grade ones fetch a decent price. If you’re lucky with drops, that’s easy silver right there."

Ryu listened carefully, absorbing every word. So that’s how the smart ones earned their way up. Skills books interested more than anything.

He nodded. "Got it. Thanks."

The scarred man smirked. "Just don’t die, Kiddo. That stuff’s usually found in dangerous places."

Ryu smiled faintly. "I’ll keep that in mind."

He finally sets his goal on a dungeon.

With the new goal in mind, he walked toward the mission board, eyes scanning for a task that would let him explore, fight, and maybe uncover a few treasures along the way like a side hustle.

Ryu’s eyes swept across the cluttered quest board, filled with notes pinned in overlapping layers. Most of them were marked with higher ranks, far out of his current range. As an F-Rank Hunter, he could only accept missions at his level for now.

After a moment, one particular quest caught his eye.

Quest: Slay F-Tier Hollowfied Creatures, be it animals, magical beasts, pets, or humans.

Reward: 20 Silver Coins per confirmed kill.

Note: Evidence is mandatory. You must bring either the severed heads or use an Image Crystal to capture the kill as proof.

Ryu squinted at the hand written note at the bottom, then clicked his tongue with irritation.

"Tch. So now you mention the evidence rule clearly? Where was this level of detail in my last mission?" he muttered under his breath. "This is seriously messed up."

He pulled the quest note off the board and tucked it away, still grumbling.

He briefly considered checking in on the status of his previous mission—the one he completed but didn’t get rewarded for. But he decided it was better to ask the Vice President directly if he ran into him later.

For now, he had a mission to complete. And this time, he would make sure to bring back the evidence properly.

Ryu made his way to the purchasing section of the Hunter Hall, where various supplies for adventurers were displayed behind enchanted glass shelves. He approached the counter and pointed at a small shimmering crystal displayed in a locked case.

"I need one Image Crystal. The cheapest one please," he said.

The shop manager, a bald man with thick glasses and a permanent frown, gave him a disinterested glance before unlocking the case.

"This is the lowest tier. Records up to 30 minutes total. No audio enhancement, just basic visual capture," the man explained while placing the crystal on the counter. "Its price is 50 silver. Non-negotiable."

Ryu nearly choked.

"Fifty? Just for just thirty minutes of footage?" he muttered under his breath, checking his pouch with a sinking heart. He barely had 10 left after buying his food.

"Can’t you give me a newbie discount? I just need it for one mission," he asked, trying to sound reasonable.

The manager didn’t even bother looking up. "No discounts. I have placed my shop here for business. Not for charity."

With a sigh of defeat, Ryu backed away from the counter. "Guess I’ll have to go old school."

He turned and left the purchasing section, muttering to himself. "I’ll just take the heads back as proof. That should be enough."

Though crude, it was free. And right now, that was all that mattered.
