Chapter 43: Chapter 43 Breakthrough

Six years later...

The shimmers of dark purple dust danced to the tune of the wind, floating freely under the moonlight.

"Yah. Yah. Yah."

A boy of twelve years stood within the wall of a spinning reddish-purple rune. Static energy flowed around it, its force creating a gust of wind.

The boy’s body glistened with sweat. His upper body was bare, his raven-black hair dancing to the tune of the wind. His grey eyes darkened.

"Yah," he yelled, and the wall shattered, but another wall reinforced again. Its mere force made him stagger.

His muscles flexed as he gathered his arms to his lower abdomen.

"Break."

The wall shattered again, heeding his command.

Then another reinforced it again. His sharp jaw clenched. He tried to gather his mana again. He closed his eyes, looking for the weak point in the formation, but the runes were spinning too fast.

"Come on, show yourself."

But the speed only increased. As if his body had sensed danger, his eyes snapped open.

His grey eyes widened as the words on the runes began to attack him. He used distortion, disorienting their attacks, but a letter flew onto his back, etching itself on his skin. Pain surged through him. His chest arched forward.

Then more letters began to fly toward him, etching themselves on his skin. The letters glowed with burning gold, almost like lava.

A gasp escaped from Kaelith’s lips, his face contorted in pain.

I have gone through pain worse than this. This is nothing, if one thing, I enjoy it.

His body froze, unmoving like a statue. His head bent down. His body felt like it was seconds away from melting. Kaelith’s face remained expressionless. He slowly raised his head, looking up at the sky.

I won’t be scared of something I inflict. If at all, I should savor it.

He closed his eyes, his lips stretching in a blissful smile.

Inside his body, his mana stream began to flow erratically, with the letters that had been etched on his skin flowing along his veins. His veins pumped, expanding as if they were about to burst. Then, they began to rearrange themselves again, strengthening the weakened vessels. The letters were mixed with mana, turning golden-red like fire.

Kaelith laughed, his body twisting from the fire burning inside him, savoring the extreme pain like it was food.

His heart pounded heavily against its cage. Just then, Kaelith’s eyes snapped open. His fingers unclenched before moving toward the spinning wall.

"If this is pain... I want to feel something greater than pain."

His feet moved toward the wall.

"If I can’t break it... I’ll walk through it."

His neck tilted unnaturally to the side. His leg stepped inside the spinning wall. His body shuddered. If the pain he had felt before was extreme, this was excruciating, burning past his body down into his soul.

But not even a whimper escaped his lips. Rather, a smile was etched on his face. He pushed through the wall. The static zapped through him. Different cuts appeared on his body. Blood dripped down his wounds, painting him red.

"If my power is distortion, then I’m distortion itself."

He stopped in the middle.

The static grew stronger and stronger, tearing into his skin. He stood still, trying to pinpoint the weak point of the formation.

"Found you."

The walls shattered, drifting through the air like dying embers. Kaelith fell to his knees. His weight dug into the ground. Blood splattered from his mouth.

His body burned from the burning letters. A high-pitched sound echoed in his ears. For a second, everything seemed blurry.

"I did it," he muttered beneath his shallow breath.

The walls had taken him six years to break, and tonight he had done it.

He raised his bloodied face halfway. Footsteps came into view. He didn’t need to see the person’s face to know who it was.

"Teacher. I did it," he said with a smile, but his voice was low and drained of life.

Gabriel stood a few steps away from him. His looks hadn’t changed that much. He held his hands behind his back. His hair was ruffled slightly by the wind. His black cloak drifted around him.

His eyes flickered with pride, but at the same time, there was a hint of fear.

"You are the first person to break through all 100 levels of the rune wall. Very impressive, I must say."

"I see you are not just a prodigy. At this rate, you might grow stronger than me... very soon." Gabriel inhaled sharply.

"You are the first to get the letters engraved on your body, earning the power of the rune. And you have also levelled up."

"I realized there was no point fighting the magic... so I became one with it, even when I knew how unbearable the pain was. I was able to break through only after accepting the pain and becoming one with it... which made it easier to break from within." Kaelith closed his eyes. His body was dripping with blood. From his head to his toes, he was painted red. freēwēbnovel.com

"I see. You took the most difficult path. I must say that I am proud to be your teacher." Gabriel nodded his head.

"No pain... no gain," he chuckled, but it was so dry and unsettling.

Gabriel squatted in front of him.

"No one can know about this yet, and your current stage. No one will believe a child of twelve has become an Ascendant. Believe me, you don’t want them to know."

Kaelith nodded his head. He had never intended to let anyone know.

"So the letters are also powerful magic? They have helped me break through to Ascendant."

"Yes, they are very powerful. It is the reward for whoever can break the formation. And that lucky person was you. Now come... let’s clean you up before your mother drives a knife down my throat."

Gabriel helped him up. Then he opened a portal leading to his mansion. The portal closed immediately as they stepped inside.

The forest seemed quiet, without anything out of place, until a black figure came out from behind a tree and blurred through the air, jumping from one tree to the other.

.......

In a dimly lit room, the smell of old scrolls and spellbooks lingered heavily in the air.

A slender frame sat on a chair, reading through a huge spellbook. She held a magnifying glass close to her eyes, reading the words line by line.

Beside the letters she was reading was an image of a creature with twisted limbs, a black skull, and smoke-clouded eyes. Its back was hunched, and its forehand hovered a few inches from the ground. Its skin was moist and black like that of a toad.

At the bottom of the image, a name was written. "Grogth."

The candle in the room flickered before a dark figure blurred into the room. The figure fell to his knees, crossing his arms across his chest as he bowed his head.

"My lady. He has broken through."
