Chapter 37: Chapter 37: So awesome

"So, classmate Celeste asked for an explanation and examples. Allow me to explain," Jeff said as the two locked eyes.

Celeste and Jeff were not particularly close, but they did not dislike each other either. However, Celeste saw him as a rival because of his intelligence.

Sometimes, when there was an exam, she would always ask about his score. There were times when she lost to him, but there were also moments when she won.

Jeff could sense her competitive spirit, but he did not care much about it. If he had taken it seriously, he would not have lost in those exams.

"So, intertextuality means that a story or text is connected to another story or text. It happens when one text mentions, copies, or is inspired by another, whether clearly or subtly."

"For example," Jeff continued as he looked around at his classmates.

Those who had been feeling sleepy were now fully awake, especially the girls.

Jeff’s voice seemed to fill them with energy, leaving them dazed as they simply stared at him.

"If a movie shows a scene where the main character raises a sword and shouts ’For Asgard,’ that is a reference to Thor from Marvel or Norse mythology. It is not copying the entire story, but it creates a connection to another well-known text. And that is the purpose of intertextuality," Jeff explained.

"Ohhh," they murmured softly, finally understanding what it meant.

Mrs. Baldoza smiled and nodded as if she had just understood, though in truth she already knew the entire module and was simply following along with the rest of the class.

"Oh, so that is what it means," Noel said with a knowing look.

Ralya, who was standing beside him, smacked the back of his head.

"Didn’t I tell you to prepare and study?" she scolded, her eyes turning sharp.

"Sorry, sorry, it’s my fault, alright," he quickly apologized.

"Hmph," she snorted, crossing her arms.

Their actions were noticed by everyone, making the rest of the class feel envious and annoyed at how openly they displayed their closeness.

Noticing the stares, Ralya quickly composed herself, while Noel, realizing the situation, also adjusted his behavior and stood their properly.

"Next are the two parts of intertextuality. The first is implicit reference, which means the text gives a hint or clue about another story without directly mentioning it. Instead of naming the other story, it might use similar ideas, symbols, or style, allowing people to recognize the connection on their own," Jeff explained clearly.

"Take this as an example. Sometimes when we watch a movie and see a hero holding up a round shield while wearing red, white, and blue, even if the movie does not mention Captain America, people will still think of him because of the colors and the shield. That is an implicit reference. It does not state the connection directly, but it gives you the idea," Jeff continued, keeping his explanation clear.

The whole class nodded, clearly following his explanation.

"Lastly, explicit reference means the writer clearly mentions or quotes another story, song, or text. It is direct, and you can easily recognize where it came from," Jeff continued to explain.

"For example, if a movie character says, ’To be or not to be,’ that is an explicit reference to Shakespeare’s Hamlet because the line is directly quoted."

"Another example is when a character says, ’With great power comes great responsibility.’ That is an explicit reference to Spider-Man because the line is directly taken from that story," he added, clapping his hands.

"Are there any more questions about intertextuality?" he asked, looking around the classroom.

Mrs. Baldoza glanced toward the back of the classroom, her gaze landing on Celeste. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

"Are there any further questions, Student Celeste?" she asked.

"No more, teacher," Celeste responded calmly, her expression unchanged.

"None? Then let us continue," Mrs. Baldoza said as she looked at the front, allowing the next student to present.

Cyrin stood up next, ready to start his. "Moving on to the intertextual figures..." she began, her voice was soft as she started to explain and provide her own set of examples.

Even though her explanation and examples were not as well-presented as Jeff’s, they were still clear enough for the class to understand, and no one looked particularly confused.

After that, their reporting was finished.

As Jeff walked back to his seat, he accidentally caught a glimpse of Mrs. Baldoza’s grading notes and noticed that his grade was marked as 100.

That was a perfect score, which surprised him, but he kept a poker face as he returned to his seat.

Next was Arven’s group, starting a new module. After they finished, it was Ariana’s turn, followed by Tala, and finally his best friends, Lester and Andre.

The two struggled to explain their part, and as three hours passed, the class eventually reached the end of all the presentations.

"Congratulations on your amazing reports, class. Tomorrow, I will not be around, so you will have some free time to study. That is all, goodbye," Mrs. Baldoza said as she addressed the class.

She then gathered her belongings and left to attend her next class.

As Jeff sat quietly at his seat, Mark reflected on what had happened just an hour ago.

"Jeff, you really are so talented, and most of all, so awesome. I feel very lucky to have you as our team leader for our research study," Mark said gratefully as he patted Jeff’s shoulder.

"Talented? All I did was stand there and explain. Anyone could do that," Jeff replied, though he could not deny that the compliment made him feel good inside.

"Everyone could do it? If everyone can do it, then why can’t we do it?" Mark snapped back.

"Look at Lester’s explanation earlier in the center. He could not even form a proper sentence in English without looking like he was about to have a stroke," Mark pointed out, causing Lester to show visible black lines on his face.

It was true, Lester had struggled badly during his part, and his voice had shrunk to barely a whisper, almost like the buzz of a mosquito, crushed by the pressure of being the center of attention.

"Haha, yeah right, this chick is so weak," Andre laughed loudly, teasing Lester.

"And do not forget about Andre," Mark quickly added, pointing at him.

"He was just standing there like an idiot, not even realizing that his explanation was completely off from what he was supposed to discuss."

"What did you say? How come I got included in this?" Andre growled angrily.

His face turning red, while Lester, now recovering, laughed back at him without holding back.

"See? Stop being so humble, you freaking dilweed," Mark said, pointing at Jeff.

"Yes, he’s right. You’re always so humble every time you do something extraordinary. Also... what’s a dilweed?" Andre asked, shifting his gaze from Jeff to Mark.

"I don’t really know, but it sounded cool, right?" Mark replied with a smile.

"Yeah, it kinda does," Lester agreed, nodding with a small laugh.

They then huddled together, laughing and sharing jokes, especially poking fun at Andre for his explanation that had left even their teacher speechless and dumbfounded.

Just remembering the look on Mrs. Baldoza’s face as she listened to Andre’s confusing explanation made them feel like they were going to die from laughter.

Finally, after a few minutes had passed, a teacher entered the room.

It was none other than Mrs. Eve, whose class schedule sometimes shifted from afternoon to morning depending on the timetable.

"Good morning, class. Please go to your respective groups so you can study and do some brainstorming for your research study," she instructed.

"So, what now, leader?" Mark asked as they all turned their eyes toward Jeff, waiting for his direction.

"Well, we really have nothing left to do. I am already done with everything, and I have already printed it. What is left now is for Mrs. Eve to check it," Jeff replied to the group.

"What? You are already done... I mean, we have already finished it?" Althea said in shock, her eyes wide.

"Wow, that is fast. I am really glad I am in this group," Ryan added with a hearty smile, clearly relieved that there was no more work left to worry about.

"So, where’s the research paper?" Lester asked, leaning closer with curiosity.

"It’s in my bag. Wait, I’ll show you," Jeff responded as he reached for his bag and was about to open the zipper.

But before he could, he was interrupted by the teacher’s voice.

"Jeff Anzon, come to the front,"
