Chapter 131: Chapter 131

"I am Aiden’s half-brother."

That sentence echoed inside Winter’s head, filling every empty spot until she blanked out.

She stopped caressing Sebastian’s hair, staring down at him with a blank expression as she could not process what she just heard.

Sebastian was worried as Winter looked indifferent after he dropped the bomb. So he hugged her waist tighter, afraid that she would push him away, "T-that doesn’t mean a thing to me, Winter! I don’t need any of Aiden’s inheritance. I’m telling you this because I want you to know the reason for my mother’s behavior."

"She wants to take everything Aiden left for you because she thinks she deserves it more than anyone," Sebastian added desperately. "I never wanted any of it. I was just heartbroken, after realizing that everything only comes down to money."

Winter felt conflicted, and asked, "Do you have any proof?"

"I can return to the mansion and take it from my mother. I didn’t think of taking the photos as proof because I was too upset," Sebastian replied. "There are a lot of pictures—sexy ones too—of Aiden’s father and my mother. They had an affair and had me as their affair child. But Rafael Kirk didn’t want to take responsibility. So he kicked her out of his life, and the rest is history..."

Winter saw no hesitation in Sebastian’s eyes. It seemed that he was telling the whole truth, and it stung.

It all made sense now, but Winter wasn’t sure if she wanted to hear this truth, because if they ran a test to compare Sebastian’s DNA and Aiden’s relatives, and it turned out that Sebastian was indeed Aiden’s half-brother, that meant he was also entitled to everything that Aiden owned.

Would that mean Winter had to share Aiden’s inheritance with Sebastian?

...

Honestly, she wouldn’t mind, because she knew that Sebastian was a good businessman who could save Goldmine Realty, something that she couldn’t do.

At the same time, she refused to let Camilla taste even a dime of Aiden’s inheritance.

Thus, she made a hard decision. She took a deep breath and said, "If you want half of Aiden’s inheritance, I can give it to you."

"No!" Sebastian refused. "I’m not poor. I have my own money, and I’m proud of it. You deserve everything that he gave to you. I just want you to know everything, so I..." Sebastian gritted his teeth as he swallowed his shame. There was no point in hiding anything at this point anyway. "So I can get your sympathy. Winter, I want your pity. I’ve ended my relationship with my mom. I told her that I’m not her son anymore. So I only have you in this world."

"You are manipulative, Sebastian," Winter said.

"I know..." Sebastian admitted. He knew he was trying to manipulate Winter to pity him, so he could have a place—someone he could call home. "But I don’t care."

Winter felt heavy in her heart.

"If you want my pity, you already have it," Winter admitted. "I won’t call you a tool anymore, and I will try to be less condescending to you. If that’s what you want."

Sebastian felt like he was a moth drawn to the light. After Winter had given him an ounce of kindness, he would want more and more until Winter could finally open her heart to him again.

He knew it was not fair for Winter, who had suffered too much in their previous lives, but this fear of abandonment had been creeping into his heart. He felt uneasy whenever he thought Winter would disappear from his life, so he couldn’t help but resort to a dirty tactic to tie her to him.

"I promise you to take her down as soon as possible, Winter," Sebastian promised. "And after I make sure that my mother is in jail, I hope that you can finally accept me back."

Winter said nothing.

Her lips thinned as a lot of conflicting feelings swirled in her heart.

But in the end, she caressed his hair and muttered, "Go back to your room, Sebastian. We can talk about this after you clear your head."

Sebastian finally let her go and got up.

He stepped back as he stared at Winter who averted her gaze immediately.

Sebastian smiled bitterly, but he knew he couldn’t push her.

"I will leave now," Sebastian said. "I’ll see you at the office tomorrow morning. I will show you what I’ve prepared to bring my mother to court."

"Mm, I will see you tomorrow. Good night, Sebastian."

Winter closed the door, but Sebastian hadn’t moved from his position. He stared at the door for a while before returning to his apartment downstairs.

Sometimes, Sebastian wondered if his love for Winter was true love, guilt, or dependency.

He guessed it might be all of them in one.

He was attracted to her beauty at first and then fell in love with her tenderness when they got married.

But now, his love had been mixed with guilt, which acted like a super glue that made him dependent on her.

"Why does it matter? As long as I can find joy in life," Sebastian mumbled as he took a bottle of wine inside the cellar and drank it while staring at the view of New York from his bedroom.

All this time, he had been clinging to his mother, because his mother told him he had nobody else except her.

Thus, Sebastian was scared of fighting back, until she betrayed him in their previous life.

Now that he was out of the toxic chain that his mother made for him, he was free to do whatever he wanted and to find his own happiness.

"But there is no better joy than being by your side, Winter..." Sebastian muttered. "Even if I will never be the number one in your heart, I don’t care."

Sebastian said that as if he really meant it, but deep down, he still hoped he could have the chance to be the number one in Winter’s life.
