Chapter 875: Challenging Authority

Chapter 875

Throughout all the chaotic back and forth, Grey remained completely lost in thought from the very moment he had been declared the new head of the faction by his allies... his friends.

He was so utterly baffled and profoundly confused that he could do nothing but stare blankly ahead at the shifting crowd.

’Is this some kind of sick joke? What are the others thinking? Why on earth are they trying to thrust the leadership of the entire faction onto me?

What is actually going on at the moment? Wait! I thought these three heirs hated my guts? So why would they suddenly surrender everything they have been battling for to me? It just doesn’t make any sense.’

He was rambling so frantically inward that he was unable to hear a single word being said in the hall, only for Leo to drop a massive bombshell that jolted his consciousness back to harsh reality.

"Fine then," Leo spat, moving away with a deep frown etching his features.

"How about this? Anybody that has a problem with this arrangement should step forward right now and battle Grey Dawn to the death."

"....."

The silence in the room was palpable as the Supreme Magus slowly turned to look in Leo’s direction with a clear ’Are you serious’ expression written across his face.

Then, turning back toward the assembly, he could see them stirring with a volatile mixture of emotions.

The vice principal’s words were a spark that was rapidly threatening to set the entire hall ablaze.

"What? Is no one stepping out to challenge him?" Leo demanded, a snarl appearing on his face as he glared into the sea of warriors.

"Fine then! Challenge accepted!" A bulky, muscular man from within the crowd shouted, his voice booming against the rafters.

The throng of people gave way, creating a path for the man to march forward.

He held a heavy, wicked-looking spiked mace in his iron grasp as he began stomping toward the platform with a murderous scowl.

Grey looked toward Leo and then shifted his gaze in Thalos’ direction for a few fleeting moments.

He was just about to open his mouth to officially reject the position being forced upon him when he suddenly stopped mid-breath.

’Come to think of it, this is actually marvelous. The head of an entire faction? My name will spread far and wide, and I could accomplish things that I wouldn’t have been able to dream of before.

Information and resources I was unable to attain will be made significantly easier for me to acquire. And—and—and when the final time comes, I can rally my own men for the coming war...’

The mage paused for a moment as a dark, calculating smile curved his lips.

’... Yes. War. The Otherworlders have networks established all around various worlds; they surely possess a massive, terrifying army.

Just myself, my allies, and a handful of friends won’t be enough to stem the tide. I need legions, warriors ready to lay down their lives for my cause. People I can utilize for the greater good. That’s right. This—this is all perfect.’

The smile on the mage’s lips widened significantly as he looked at the direct descendants, then at Leo, before finally fixing his gaze on the challenger who had reached the base of the platform.

"What? Are you too scared to come down here and face me? Haha! What a pathetic weakli—!"

"Earth magic; bind."

Almost immediately, the stone floor surged with a violent rumble, and the earth instantaneously wrapped around the bulky man from all corners, encasing him in a terrestrial tomb before he could even finish his insult.

The crowd was completely taken aback by the sudden display of power, many taking shaky steps backward while staring in shock at the instantaneous attack.

Grey finally began walking forward with a quiet, terrifying confidence.

A frozen smirk remained on his face as he casually tucked his hands into his pockets, looking down at his captive.

He then stood at the edge of the raised platform.

Leaning forward, he glared at the bulky man struggling to break free from the bindings.

"Wind swords."

Swooosh—! Swoooosh—!

Two wind swords suddenly burst forward, decapitating the man and causing blood to spray in a macabre display.

Gasps—!

The stunned looks on the faces of everyone present rippled outward as the earth holding the man’s body crumbled, and his remains fell limply to the ground.

Rising back to his full height, Grey’s gaze swept across the silenced crowd.

"Anybody else?"

***

The mage’s allies were grinning from ear to ear at the swift, lethal display he had just performed.

However, the bald man clenched his fists at the sight.

Grinding his teeth back and forth in a fit of denial, he ripped his sword from its scabbard.

"Fret not! This is all part of a calculated plan to make us terrified and make him appear strong. That warrior was definitely in on this ruse! Take him down!" The man bellowed into the air.

Immediately, half of the warriors present—including those who had been seated alongside the bald man—surged toward Grey at full speed.

Staring at the incoming tide, the mage merely sighed.

Without hesitation, he let his aura flow.

A suffocating, localized pressure descended upon the room, causing beads of sweat to begin trickling down their temples, yet the charging men did not halt.

Grey just coolly began walking down the platform until he stood exactly where the warrior he had just killed lay in a pool of blood.

He stared at the charging soldiers with a calm, detached look on his face.

Bright blue light began appearing around his hands and feet.

Instantly, a pair of lightning swords were in his grasp, along with a pair of crackling lightning boots.

BANG—!

A lingering afterimage remained where the mage had stood just a millisecond prior.

With overwhelming velocity, he was already in the midst of the men—moving far faster than their minds could possibly comprehend.

Almost instantly, the whole hall descended into absolute chaos.

Despite how expansive the chamber was, no one could escape the reach of this clash.

Blood sprayed like a fountain. Limbs were flying through the air, and screams tore through the atmosphere.

The only thing the survivors could track was a streak of azure weaving between the men with a high-level speed that defied vision.

The majority of the warriors in the room were at stage 5, with the strongest among them—the orange-haired woman and the bald man—being stage 7 Yun warriors respectively.

Yet, these people who stood against the mage were being dismantled as if they were mere toys.

The bald man finally managed to catch sight of Grey, but before he could even think of initiating an attack, a dozen fireballs crashed into his torso.

The impact incinerated him instantly, leaving him to crumple to the ground like burnt bread.

With the threat neutralized, Grey discarded the now-dissipating lightning swords while he walked through the sea of bodies and blood with an eerie calm.

He climbed the platform coolly before seating himself upon the throne-like chair under the stunned, terrified gazes of those who hadn’t dared to challenge him.

He sat down coldly after massacring more than a hundred stage five and above warriors—and all within a mere thirty seconds.
