My Beast Evolution System-Chapter 48. Winterfell Graveyard.
The chamber fell silent as the battle came to an end.
Seeing this, everyone let out a sigh of relief and Aaron sheathed his sword while breathing heavily.
"It’s over," Diana said with a steady but weary voice.
"Yes, it is," Aurora agreed, but Aaron looked around in search of the Frostfang, but once again, the massive wolf was nowhere to be found.
The wolf had spotted them when the group initially crossed through the mountain paths to Winterfell City and it had been following them ever since.
It had followed them due to its curiosity, and it kept a large distance from them so that neither Glimmer nor Thunder would be able to detect it. This was why no one knew the Frostfang wolf had been following them until it saved them from the colossal vermin.
Either way, with the battle settled, the group decided to camp outside the ruins to rest a bit.
Diana leaned against a boulder and she began sharpening her sword. "The colossal beast was stronger than I had expected it to be. If it weren’t for the Frostfang wolf, we probably wouldn’t be here right now."
Aaron remained silent after listening to what Diana said.
He was currently sitting with Glimmer, who was taking a nap beside him. He gently stroked her fur before speaking. "You’re right and that’s why I won’t let that happen again."
Later that evening, as the group prepared to sleep, Aurora sat apart from the others with a troubled look on her face, but Aaron noticed this and he approached her with a gentle voice. "You’ve been quiet since the battle. What’s on your mind?"
Aurora sighed and her fingers began to trace the spine of her staff. "I keep thinking about my parents. They sacrificed everything to protect our people while I couldn’t. Everyone I knew protected me one way or the other to make sure that I arrived here safely with the last remaining survivors of our kingdom. I promised myself to improve my skills, with the hope that it would give me the strength I need to take back my kingdom. But after what happened today, I was reminded of how weak I am. I wonder if I’ll ever be strong enough," Aurora tightened her hands into fists while she said all these to Aaron. But Aaron crouched down beside her and began tossing some sticks and pieces of wood into the burning fire in front of them.
"I understand why you would want to grow stronger to take back your kingdom, but strength isn’t just about power. It’s about perseverance and you’ve already done more than most people could."
Aurora looked at him and asked. "Do you really believe that?"
"I do," Aaron replied firmly. "And I think your parents would, too."
Hearing his words, a faint smile appeared on her lips. "Thanks, Aaron. That... means a lot."
Aaron smiled back in return and the two conversed a bit before calling it a night and falling asleep.
The next morning, Aaron approached Diana who was staring at a location that seemed like it was completely consumed by miasma.
The air within that location looked nauseating and ominous, and anyone could see how dangerous it was even from where Aaron stood which was pretty far from it."
"Is that...?" Aaron began to ask, but before he could finish voicing his question, Diana replied first.
"It’s the graveyard. Judging by how it looks, the artifact we’re searching for should probably be there."
"Then, we’ll rest for a while and head to the graveyard in the next fifteen minutes."
Fifteen minutes passed and the group made their way to the graveyard, but the closer they got to the location, the more changes they began to notice around them.
To prevent the miasma in the air from hurting them, Aurora cast a spell and now everyone’s bodies were glowing in a faint yellow light.
Aaron led the group, Thunder trotted beside him, and Glimmer darted ahead with her fiery tails glowing faintly behind her.
Aurora, on the other hand, adjusted her hood against the growing wind while Diana rested a hand on the hilt of her sword.
As they crested a hill, the graveyard came into view and now everyone could clearly see how the graveyard looked.
The graveyard was littered with the skeletons of countless beasts and even humans. Some were partially buried while others formed strange, unnatural structures.
In front of them, the group could see a fortress-like formation of bones and rocks. However, they could also see a few demonic beasts patrolling the perimeter.
They easily took care of the beasts in front of them and as they moved deeper into the graveyard, Aaron and his team encountered even more beasts.
They were a pack of demonic beasts with twisted and misshapen forms. Glimmer growled as her fur bristled while Thunder lowered his head with electricity sparking from his antlers.
Aaron swiftly tightened the grip on his sword and he whispered loud enough for everyone to hear. "We’ll handle this like we always do," He said and everyone nodded in response because this simply meant that Aaron would be striking from the right flank, Diana would take the left flank, and Aurora would support them from behind while Glimmer and Thunder would attack from the middle.
Diana was the first to move; she charged forward and her blade flashed in the light as she cut down the first beast. Also, Glimmer darted between enemies with her {Inferno Strike}, as she ignited any beast she encountered in flames.
Meanwhile, Aurora cast a light magic spell that helped to disorient the beasts for a while before Aaron and Thunder ended them all.
The group pressed forward but as they did so, they suddenly encountered a towering monstrosity of bones. Its eyes were glowing and its body looked like it had absorbed a lot of different skeletal bones to become the beast it was now.
The huge beast let out an ear-splitting roar that reverberated throughout the graveyard. The ground shook, and tendrils of miasma snaked toward Aaron and his team, but everyone managed to steer away from the creepy-looking vibes.
