My Fated Mate Can Have Her-Chapter 20: Syzygy
Violet
I took a slow breath, forcing down the bitterness, the hurt, the anger. My throat tightened. So did my chest.
"So, what now? What do I need to know about what I am... about this power?"
Tow sighed and her figure shifted as her frown faded. She seemed relieved. "I can’t give you the full Lycan history right now, but you should know what you truly are. A long time ago, they were hunted to extinction... because of how powerful they were. The Lycan bloodline is powerful, and far stronger than the average wolf, even more than Supreme Alphas. They had their own nation, with a council of rulers rather than a single one. They also didn’t live as packs within their territory."
Tow moved to the window, her figure framed by the moonlight. "But, even though the Lycan nation was small, they were so powerful that their mere existence threatened the Supreme Alphas at the time."
She finally looked at me. "Unlike other wolves who answer to the moon, Lycans alone answer to both the moon and sun. That dual divine power, puts them leagues above other wolves. The lunar instinct that normal wolves have is what enables them to shift. This force boosts their physical abilities, their strength, and improves other skills they might have.
"In regards to very powerful wolves, like Alphas and higher betas like me, our lunar instinct can manifest as certain special abilities that are heightened at night, and even more improved when the moon is out."
My attention drifted to the moonlight filtering through the window. Was that why she had been able to do that to me?
Tow ruffled her hair with a hand as she also looked out the window. "The special abilities vary depending on the person and it is usually one distinct ability. What I did to you is not it, but just a perk of a Supreme Alpha’s immediate subordinate."
I frowned again, remembering the disgusting feeling of how she had forcibly shut me up, but she didn’t look at me and only continued talking.
"Supreme Alphas however, have a set of abilities, much like Lycans. If anything, Lycans are a more advanced versions of Supreme Alphas. Kael, like other Supreme Alphas, possesses inner wolves, a separate consciousness that comprises of their instincts. When Supreme Alphas shift, they can summon their inner wolf as a separate entity, basically a separate physical wolf under their control."
My eyes widened. There was another consciousness in Kael’s head?
"I don’t know if Lycans can do that, but there was no mention of that in their records. But they do have other superior abilities that are also just as strong in daylight. And monstrous during eclipses of any kind."
Tow straightened and eyed me. "As for Lycans, the force they used is not lunar instinct, but syzygy."
"Syzygy?" I mouthed the unfamiliar word.
It sounded strange.
Tow smiled and gestured with her hands. "That was what the Lycans called it. It means the union of opposites. The sun and moon. I will teach you how to use your syzygy and cultivate it, but you will have to do most of the heavy lifting. A lunar instinct is different, and even though I am one of the most skilled user, I am not a Lycan."
"I don’t understand," I spoke up, disrupting her train of thought. "Lycans were killed off for being too powerful and you want to make me stronger? Even if you are supposedly doing this because I am his mate, you are not worried I could use that power against you? Or is this—"
"I may have my personal motives, but I do this on Kael’s command," she cut me off, her face serious. "It may be the mate bond influencing him, but he wants things to be better for you, and that includes getting stronger."
My brows furrowed in worry. I would not reject this prime offer, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. This wasn’t selfless, and if I was thinking correctly, this would benefit him too.
"I understand..." I murmured, "So they were killed off. Just because they were stronger? They didn’t pose any danger in any way?"
Tow sighed and shook her head. "Unfortunately, power unchecked is threatening. A single Lycan could decimate an entire pack... Now, you know, as well as I do that people are different. Just as rouge wolves come from packs, there were Lycan deviants. But many wolves of the past were so consumed by their fear that they took this drastic measure."
Tow moved towards me. "The wolves of that era took things too far. They banded together, orchestrated what they called the great cleansing, framed Lycans as abominations, corruptions, and within a single generation, they had hunted them all to extinction." She stopped directly in front of me. "Some Lycans loved other wolves and had descendants, until the gene was watered down... but the wolves went after those descendants too. But here you are."
I shuddered, the weight of the situation settling down on me. I was the existing remnant of an ancient genocide.
’This is dangerous.’
"There’s one more thing we need to address." Tow’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. "Your presence here. Wolves in the capital are already talking, wondering who you are, why Kael brought you here and why you’re in his estate. If anyone asks about it, just say you do not know. Kael’s orders."
I just nodded.
Tow offered a faint smile and then moved towards the door. "Tomorrow morning, I will start teaching you. Please, rest. Get your strength back, you’re going to need it."
She then paused, her hand on the door.
She glanced back at me. "One last thing, whatever you may have experienced in your pack, it won’t be worse here, but I can’t promise it would be better. Please, stay within the grounds of the estate as much as possible."
"I still do not deserve to be ostracized for being different," I said bitterly, my throat tighter than before. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Tow didn’t say anything. She left. Just like that.
I stared at the closed door for what felt like an eternity. I couldn’t cry. I couldn’t even laugh.
What hurt the most was I was mated to someone who couldn’t acknowledge me either... even if it was silent. I wasn’t sure I would be willing to stand with him when he can’t even accept me as I am now.
