Chapter 21: Restless

Violet

I did not sleep.

How could I when my soul was this restless?

The realization of what I was and just how severe my situation was, was jarring. But what pained and disgusted me the most was how I was viewed. Already cast aside because of something I could not control.

And Tow... how casually she treated the matter was disturbing and it had felt far worse than Maren’s hostility.

It was so normal...

The thoughts plagued me until day break and Tow came as she had mentioned, with food, and a new realization. He kept no servants on his estate. Something about respecting his privacy, but they did come once every week to do a general sweep of the area. We started the training in my room for some reason, which did not take long due to a sudden realization that stunned Tow.

And it made me see myself in a new light.

She had brought me to what seemed to be a small, nearly empty training hall and left, likely to go report this new development to Kael, while telling me she would be back shortly.

In simple words, I had two forces in me, not just one and those two made up the syzygy. It was what made the power chaotic and out of control due to the solar and lunar forces constantly pulling at each other. These two opposing forces could have killed me, consuming my body from within until there was nothing left.

Young Lycans, even back then died from the very power they had if they didn’t learn to control it before adulthood.

And I had managed to do something so difficult easily.

Without even fully understanding it.

The thought still sent a chill over my body. So that was why I felt I was about to die in the neutral zone before Kael found me.

And it was also what made me lose my life while I was protecting myself against the patrol wolves.

I leaned against the window, watching my finger-tips. They shimmered with a faint silver light that vanished just as soon as it had appeared. I felt it. It felt like a passing pulse but not something I could entirely control.

But I was past the point of balancing the syzygy. All I had to learn now was to control and master it...

I focused, but couldn’t really tell a difference. It felt like a single entity, and I still did not recall feeling two different forces in my body days ago. Then again, I barely focused on it and my emotions were too chaotic at the time.

Voices disrupted my train of thought and I immediately moved out of view. But I still peeked from the corner. The empty courtyard I had noticed last night was filled with a few people. Some entering and leaving the estate. A lot of them occupied the ground floor, mostly to see Kael and attending to one thing or the other.

Something big seemed to be happening.

One of the wolves stopped talking and he tilted his head to catch my gaze. I immediately moved away from the window, caught off guard.

I really should not underestimate how perceptive the wolves are here.

"Violet?"

I turned to find Tow in the arched doorway. She looked the same as when she left, but there was something in her expression now that I couldn’t read.

"I needed to confirm something," she said, stepping into the hall and closing the door behind her. "About your syzygy already being balanced... I will be honest, that is unexpected. I want to understand the full scope of your abilities first. Have you been able to manifest it in any way, or any ability?"

I hesitated, glancing at my hands. "I have been able to move small things. Objects. The first time I think I tried it, I felt weak."

It was no use hiding this. I needed the help with growing stronger.

Her brows rose. "Moving things? Telekinesis?"

I lightly frowned. "I have never heard that word, but yes? I have barely done it, but when I do focus on the sy... syzygy, then an object, I am able to move it."

Tow blinked at first, silent. Then she spoke, "Do you will it to move with or without your hands?"

"My hands."

A strange excitement crept into Tow’s voice. "Telekinesis is not even all that common amongst Lycans." Her eyes roamed around the hall, and I followed it.

There was barely anything in here, aside from scorched marks on the stone walls and floor, and a small table at the end of the hall.

She gestured to it. "Show me. I would like to see it."

"I haven’t perfected it and I believe I have only done it once or twice."

"Then this is a very good opportunity to start," she said with an encouraging tone, her eyes fixed on the small table.

Just like I had focused on the stool back in the room, I directed my attention to the small furniture. It trembled, then moved. Before darting sharply towards me. I abandoned it and jumped out of its path.

My heart raced and I turned around, expecting to hear a crash, but Tow was in front of the table, her hand on its surface. She had stopped it.

She looked at me. "That was... good. Your hands seemed to glow. It was very faint, but still there..."

I stared at her. "I didn’t notice." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Because you were too focused on the table. It looked like you were drawing strength from your syzygy to move it. Why not try extending it outward... like an invisible hand. Try lifting it this time."

I paused, then looked at the table. How was I supposed to do that exactly?

I glanced back at Tow. "I—"

The door opened and my concentration immediately shattered.

Kael stood in the doorway, and the air in the hall immediately shifted as the sudden awareness of his presence made everything else fade into background noise.

He looked different. More put together. The stubble was gone and he was covered this time. Darker loose pants and a dark loose long-sleeved shirt. The shirt had a fine gold detailing at the borders and a v neck that revealed a portion of his upper chest.

It felt indecent.

I immediately looked away.

Tow looked genuinely surprised. "I thought you were leaving."
