Chapter 518: Sealed Away (Ch.519)

A low ringing sound resonated through Neveah’s head. Neveah gasped quietly as rapid surges of power rushed through her veins, completely out of control.

Neveah could feel an array of emotions churning through her, rage... betrayal...

All of which Neveah knew were not hers, neither did they belong to her wolf.

’Jian!... Jian!...’ That haunting voice in Neveah’s heard roared, with a rage that rivalled Jian’s.

It knew King Jian...clearly, King Jian knew it too, the order King Jian had given was like a bind on it, forcing it down in Neveah’s mind and it protested fiercely.

It was furious, completely livid, Neveah could feel its rage coursing through her veins but at the same time, she could sense that it was intimidated... King Jian’s dominant aura far overpowered it.

It knew it had to obey King Jian’s command, Neveah felt that.

A heavy weight bore down on her chest, making it nearly impossible to breathe and her lungs felt like they would be crushed.

The ringing in Neveah’s head grew louder, almost deafening and just when Neveah felt she would lose her mind, Neveah felt a hand on her shoulder and she was pulled into King Jian’s arms,

He held her closely and tightly, rubbing a hand soothingly down her back.

His warmth was comforting, even through the mess that her mind had become, and his touch immediately calmed the storm brewing within her.

"I am sorry, Neveah... forgive me..." King Jian whispered softly, placing a kiss on Neveah’s head.

The ringing abruptly came to a stop.

The weight on her chest also disappeared mysteriously, allowing Neveah the breaths she desperately needed.

Neveah clung to King Jian as she took in deep breaths and he held her until Neveah was completely soothed and even after that, whispering quiet apologies and soothing words.

They were in that position for a short time in complete silence and when Neveah was certain she was back in control of her mind, she pulled away, staring up at King Jian.

His gaze was complicated, but if there was one emotion Neveah could decipher in it, it was guilt.

"You keep saying you are sorry to me... why?" Neveah asked quietly.

King Jian breathed a heavy sigh, leaning down, he lifted Neveah up into his arms and begun heading out of the forest.

"I can walk by myself, you know." Neveah said to King Jian.

She did not insist on her question, Neveah could see in King Jian’s eyes that it was a complicated topic.

"You do not have to." King Jian murmured in response.

Neveah did not protest further, King Jian was not in a very pleasant mood and she did not wish to make things worse for him.

"The fault lies with me... the reason he hurt you." King Jian said in a low tone after a short moment of silence.

"He... the voice in my head, you spoke to it...it called your name too. What is it...?" Neveah asked in confusion.

King Jian’s brows twitched slightly and Neveah lifted a hand to his face.

"Hey...you do not need to say anything if you do not want to. You can just tell me whenever you are ready." Neveah reassured.

Neveah understood better than anyone that there were certain things that were difficult to share, not even with those you trusted.

There was a lot Neveah herself had not been able to tell anyone, she had not even told anyone about the voice in her head all this while...not even her father.

And what was to say that King Jian even trusted Neveah? He had no reasons to. Their bond had only come to their knowledge a day before and prior to that, they were the farthest thing from friends even.

"Demevirld...he was named so by my father." King Jian relayed to Neveah, just when she had concluded he would not say anything more.

"Demevirld..." Neveah muttered, recalling King Jian had called to the voice in her head with that name and it had responded.

"It is...was my father’s battle weapon." King Jian continued.

"A weapon?" Neveah asked incredulously.

"Not the kind you all are familiar with. Demevirld is a magical weapon with one sole purpose...it provides dragons with the ability to wield magic, a power that we were not born to hold or use..." King Jian said, his voice barely above a whisper.

His tone was dark, and there was an underlying pain in it. Like every word he was saying was painful for him to recall.

"Many believe my father was all powerful... leading the dragons to victory in the uprising."

"What the world does not know is that dragon strength was just not enough against dark magic... the uprising was doomed to fail."

"But my father, he could not accept the thought of defeat... the thought of failing to grant our people the freedom he had promised them..."

"And so, he took a drastic step...he forged Demevirld... the ability for royal blooded dragons to practice magic. His cause was simple...to fight magic with magic..." King Jian murmured.

Neveah’s eyes widened slightly, she had not realized there was more to the great uprising than what she had already heard.

High King Agardan lead the dragons to victory... that was the summary all books told.

"Demevirld...it is passed down to the next royal heir. But my father never gave it to Asrig...he left it to me instead." King Jian murmured.

Neveah did not need King Jian to say the words, but she could tell that this in itself was one of the conflicts between the two brothers.

"But you hate magic...so you did not want it." Neveah murmured in understanding.

"The battle had ended, my purpose was to restore peace. Demevirld was...is too powerful, so much that it had developed a mind of it’s own, a radical. I knew what it was capable of, what it would make me..."

"Dragons should not practice magic, I watched my father get lost in it and I did not wish the same for myself... so I stored Demevirld away, shipped it off in an enchanted oak box to my mother’s hometown...Fort Blazed." King Jian said.

"For four centuries... since my father’s passing, Demevirld has been sealed away. To it... this is the greatest betrayal." King Jian revealed.
