Chapter 885: Best Result (Ch.886)

Alessio’s gaze darkened like a rain cloud crested over his brows, warning of a storm brewing right beneath the surface. An almost pained expression flashed through his eyes.

It was swift, but prominent, impossible to miss.

"You’re wrong, Veah." Alessio murmured, his eyes shone with emotions that were too difficult to decipher.

"You have no idea, how it feels to watch the woman you love slit her own wrist and bleed out right in front of you..." His voice cracked, like the weight of the memory was heavy on his mind and even heavier on his tongue.

"You have no idea just how helpless I felt, being unable to do anything to save you...you have no idea!" He snarled,

Neveah winced as his outburst put pressure on his wounds, and in turn, sent a jolt of pain across her side.

"I just wanted to keep you from making another silly mistake." Alessio continued, his hands clenched tightly at his sides. "You may not value your life, you may be willing to throw it away for some false idea of righteousness...but I can’t! I won’t!"

His eyes blazed with rage, "Fate brought you back to me! Do you think I’d throw that away just because you can’t see the truth right before your eyes?!"

"I’ve seen your dark sides, Neveah. I know your weaknesses, I’ve watched you crawl and beg for mercy right at my feet! I know everything you try to hide behind a mask of perfection and honour!"

Neveah flinched. Her mind spun, that familiar pulsing ache blossoming in her skull.

Tugging, demanding like it always did. And then it would grow, and overwhelm her until she could take it no more.

’Not now...’ Neveah’s mind reeled, the horror of the impending pain and the unavoidable black out creeping into her.

’Just not now...’

Her fists clenched. She couldn’t show her pain. If Alessio didn’t already feel it, it meant whatever he’d done was only restricted to bodily harm.

The darkness crawling through her mind would leave him unaffected. But if she lost consciousness now...if she fell into his hands, it was all over.

"And yet..." He paused, drawing in a sharp breath.

"Yet I still want you so desperately. Don’t you see I’m the only one who’s capable of loving you so absolutely?!"

Neveah shook her head slightly. Alessio was so obsessed with his own delusions, he truly believed them himself.

"You can’t keep me against my will Alessio." Neveah’s tone was dark and unyielding, "That’s not love... it’s a bondage."

Alessio sneered. "You would know. Isn’t that all your life has been about? Bondage?"

Neveah recoiled like she’d been burned. The pulsing pain in her head grew stronger. She retreated a step back, her brows furrowed in confusion...

"Do you think you were any less caged with them?! It was never your wish to be taken by them! But you’re so accustomed to bondage you merely changed your cage and believed you’d made a choice." Alessio chuckled darkly, shaking his head,

"Freedom? You don’t even know what that is! How can you want something you’ve never had?!"

His words forced a crushing weight on her heart, heavy enough, breathing grew harder... heavier, and she didn’t even know why.

She couldn’t remember why...

"The winter wolves? Do you really believe they’re here just for you?" He continued, "They didn’t even wage a war for your mother, what makes you any different?!"

"It’s simple. You’re justification... for territory expansion. Every domain has been eyeing the next for centuries and you simply gave them the easy route to the Eclipse Domain!"

Her fists clenched tighter. Her nails digging into her palm hard enough to draw blood.

"I really thought you were wiser. I thought you would know the world better now... but seeing the world has only blinded your eyes."

"You’ve forgotten all the knowledge forced into you...all the pain it took to acquire them."

Sweat beaded on Neveah’s forehead as the pain ravaged her insides. Her muscles spasmed, forcing the urge to curl up into a ball, and dark spots danced along the edges of her vision.

She resisted, biting down harshly on her tongue. The pain was nothing compared to what she already felt, but it was enough to keep her rooted.

"Face it, Veah. Come to your senses now... Come here." Alessio demanded, extending a hand to her. "We can put everything behind us. I’ll forgive everything... for you, I’m willing to do anything."

Her heart pounded painfully against her rib cage. Like it would burst right out of her chest.

"Neveah..." Alessio urged, his tone insistent. "We need to get you treated."

He took a step forward and Neveah retreated.

Her vision spun with the movement. Alessio’s wounds had healed now and he no longer limped, but she didn’t have the same advantage...not anymore.

"Come here, Neveah..." Alessio demanded again.

He advanced on her and Neveah retreated back in tandem.

Her steps were staggered as the pain grew stronger, a white hazy mist clouded the corner of her eyes and she shook her head to clear her vision.

She didn’t sense the edge until her heel bumped into it harshly enough to throw her off balance.

"Neveah!!!"

Only then, with Alessio’s roar, did she realise...

She was falling...

The wind whipped all around her as her body was ruthlessly pulled down by the unforgiving force of gravity.

She reached for the familiar magic within her veins, desperately...

But the white haze all around her seemed to be swallowing her up, blocking out every sound... numbing every feeling but that pulsing pain,

She was falling...

She couldn’t do anything about it. She’d brought an entire army to her aid, and still, she couldn’t avoid this result,

She had thought defeat would mean she would be looking into those forest green eyes when she died.

But instead, the clear blue skies stared back.

It was beautiful...how did she forget just how beautiful the skies were?

It stirred a liberating feeling deep within her... like the shackles of being earth bound was broken away.

The feeling was familiar... distant but familiar.

But she was falling,

And maybe, this was the best result.

Alessio would join her soon. Without her, the winter wolves had nothing holding them back. No reason to spare him.

She didn’t have hopes or dreams left unfulfilled. If she did, she couldn’t remember them.

She didn’t have anything she desired. She didn’t have regrets. No memories meant no regrets.

One lived to die and died to live.

Maybe, this was the best result.

But why did it feel so familiar? The feel of gravity tugging at her, and the wind whipping around her,

She’d felt it before. She could distinctly remember it.

And there was something more... something she couldn’t quite place a finger on.

A flash of gold whipped past the corner of her eyes, just as they fluttered closed.

And then, the world stopped.

No, not the world. She did.
